Why is Pourcel running 377? Was he grandfathered into the 377, like Alessi with 800? Because national numbers says he's #30 this year.

Because he petitioned to the AMA to run 377 and was approved. Please try to keep up. Tongue

CP377 is the honey badger of the AMA numbering system.

He petitioned to run it. I'm assuming the reason he gets to run it is because he had the 377 as a career number at one point.

Just send an email to AMA and demand them to strip him off of his number. Easy. Here is an email where you can do it. http://www.americanmotorcyclist.com/contact

What's the big deal if he is superstitious about running the number he wants? If you want to run a three didgit I don't see what the problem is, it's easier to recognize riders when the numbers aren't changing this year, plus some riders like myself are pretty partial to their own numbers. He's been 377 for as long as I can remember, why change it now?

I like the fact that he hangs on to this number.

I am glad they gave him 377.

I'm outraged.

The entire foundation of this fabulous number system is eroding one day at a time

I am pissed that he gets to run a number that he wants. He should have to run what he earned last year... like the old days. I also hate four strokes and television.

DPR250R is reading my mind. I would have typed the same thing if he hadn't beaten me to it. It's almost spooky.

The numbering system is a joke anyway, how are riders supposed to market and brand themselves when they change numbers every year.

It could become a very important question in the near future.

Someone in another thread had brought up the question of James Stewart returning as 259 since his career number requires him to gain 25 points in the next season. Obviously, that was just another vital thread, but it brought up a good point. The only exception would be for injury. I can't imagine a "ban" is the same as injury. Typically, punishment doesn't warrant an exception to the rule. Also, what is not clear to me, it says must earn 25 points in the next season....next season? The season winning the championship / earning the number?

McGrath came out of retirement to retain his #2 and do some testing for Honda. He actually pulled the holeshot and I was loving every minute. But it was years after his retirement. What was the deal there?

All things aside. AMA backed Stewart so I can't imagine them allowing anyone else to take his number.

Potentially, after this year, there will be #2, #7, #8 and #9 available. I can't imagine Webb would pick #8 if he won the championship. 6 and 8 are about the ugliest numbers on a bike, no offense to Grant Langston.

There's no rule that says you have to take that number.

There is a rule however that you have to run the two digit number that you earned the previous season. I'm a little bit surprised the AMA let him keep the 377, bench racing topic, if it was Alessi, would they give him the 800? (Probably but whatever).

I like that he got to keep the 377, easy to spot him, but I don't know why you guys react like such kids when I asked a valid question? The press release said that Pourcel was listed as 30, and I don't remember seeing any interviews/press releases where he requested to be 377 again. Sorry for not being the "All-knowing person" like you guys Laughing
