How would have the championship changed had it been in chase format?

Not to familiar with the chase format that AX does, but just wondering if anyone had done the math to figure out how the championship would have ended had it used that format. Im guessing Dungey still would have won, with Tomac 2nd and Seely 3rd? Im pretty sure the 250sx classes would also have had the same results. IMO the series needs a change in the points system, it was a little bit boring watching the last few races with the champions already crowned.

I also understand how stubborn people are, and how "rose tinted" their glasses are about the good ol days and how nothing should ever change. But c'mon, 4 races to go and championship is already over? Added to the fact that we basically knew who was gonna win by the time round 10 rolled around (Dungey had a 40 point lead at the end of Daytona). The series would have been a hell of a lot more exciting had it used the chase format.

The points system doesn't need to change. Racing is not football or baseball. NASCAR's championship is a joke.

Nascar forces drivers and teams to be perfect at the end of the schedule. Makes for more exciting racing.

If you win nearly half the races in a given season like Dungey did, good things are going to happen.

Nascar drivers are rarely injured.

So maybe they should only give the winner, half the points that he earned, if he's leading the series by more than 25 points... Tongue

Leave it alone, Dungey kicked butt over everybody except Roczen...he deserves every point that he earned!

It would have most likely finished the same, however nobody would have known until Vegas was complete. We went into Vegas already knowing the outcome. Dungey would have had enough bonus points for race wins that he would have had a 4-5 point cushion heading into Vegas.

You would not have absentee riders if there was a chase . No prepping for the outdoors before the season ends if you still have something to race for.

I was actually thinking about this last night but I'm honestly too lazy and averse to math to try and figure it out. I sort of like the idea of weighted mains (100 pts instead of 25) for the last rounds after Easter break. But I'm pretty sure Dungey would have still won it.

Well... Roczen would probably not have been practicing outdoors as much...

Dungey wouldve wrapped it up a race or two later.

They should count your 10 best plus final. So many injuries and spills. Barcia or reed would have benefited and so would the fans.

So theoretically, a rider could win the first 12 races, then have some bad luck/results at the last couple of rounds, and not win the championship. I don't think that there is an asterisk in large enough font for that scenario.
If a rider crushes his competition, he deserves for the points to reflect that fact.

I wouldn't be adverse to the 450's dropping their worse result, it's one long season. But other than that it should stay the same. And no matter how the points system changed I can't see the results being any different

I don't know how this chase format works but you can do some other changes.

- Age rule in order to make guys like Musquin, Davalos move up.
- One 250 Championship, no more East and West.
- Remove the semis for 450 class, it's ridiculous.

In NASCAR a driver could win the first 35 races and finish 2nd in the last race and lose the championship.

Depends how many people are in the chase, if they only take the top ten, why would anyone of the others bother rocking up apart from sponsor commitments, might as well start focusing on a full outdoor championship!

He might of, he might not have made the chase after going out so early!

Well...

He was 4th in points after round 10 at Daytona...

and he's been doing a lot of testing.

I'd say he'd have been fine.

I agree.

Imagine your whole season going down the drain due to another rider taking you out on the last lap.

Or a broken shock, or a flat tire. Nascar cheapened their championship.

Wow, I disagree with every one of your points.

I think the time is right for a change. Their needs to be a better way to make the end of the series more entertaining for the fans and riders. The chase system would make the last 4 to 6 rounds the most important of the year rather than have them be insignificant altogether. The field naturally becomes thinned out and many riders begin preparation for their next series rather than travel the country to compete in events where very little is at stake. I don't advocate copying NASCAR's current system, which has gone too far, IMO, but some minor changes to the points system could have a tremendous beneficial and positive impact on the SX series. why not do reverse gate picks, quickest get the last Pick. The round seely won where dungey and a few others had to bsttle through the pack was epic.

I think it would be cool if they simply dropped everybody's worst race.

Points for heat race wins and your worst race gets dropped.

I think this might be interesting! but at the same time I think its just fine the way it is. I know everybody wants to grow the sport, but lets not sell out on its rich history. Nascar is not where we should be trying to go with it ! Motocross is all about being the smartest, toughest bad ass on the track. lets not water it down with gimmicks designed to draw a bigger crowd !

If you do a best ten and the final riders who have a few weeks off for an injury means they still could do something. The way it is now miss two weeks and the championship hunt is over.

There shouldn't be a winner... all participants should get a SpongeBob lunchbox and a free ticket to Legoland..
