As James Stewart can't race anywhere until August, if he was hypothetically free to race MXGP, how do you think he would be doing compared to Ryan Villopoto?
My own opinion is he wouldn't be doing as well as Ryan, pre Trentino crash, as he probably couldn't adjust to the changing GP 2 day format and his renowned harsh SX front fork set up just wouldn't work on the rougher GP tracks!

I don't think he's the same rider today and the overall standard of riding (worldwide) has probably risen slightly since then, but I would still say he is perfectly capable of winning GPs, just like RV is capable of winning more GPs this season.

On the Saturday in 2006 he rode fast and flawlessly all day, while Everts crashed. On the Sunday Everts showed his experience got the better of him, but they were both a class apart from the rest of the field.
In 2008 Stewart was by far the fastest rider all weekend and really should have gone 1-1 but for a silly mistake in the second moto. He was so far infront of S.Pourcel by that point he could have still won the race if he'd been able to fire up his bike straight away. That was just shitty luck.
2006
Win qualifying race by 2-3 secs over Everts and 36-37secs over Mckenzie. Everts fast lap was 2:05:4, Stewart was 2:03:1 and Mckenzie was 2:07:5.
Race 1
Everts wins with 11sec over Stewart and 16 over Villopoto (who was on a 250). Stewart fastest lap in 2:08:1, Everts in 2:08:6 and Villopoto in 2:08:5. Only Pourcel was in 2:08:6, and everybody else in 2:11 at best.
Race 2
Everts win over Stewart by 4 secs and Philipearts finished 3rd 18secs behind JS7. Everts best lap was 2:06:3, Stewart in 2:07:3 and Philipearts in 2:08:7. Barragan was the 3rd fastest with a 2:07:7.
2008
Win qualifying by 10 seconds overs Sebastien Pourcel (Christophe's old brother for those who don't know him) and 12 over De Dycker. Stewart fastest lap was a 1:57:6, Pourcel in 1:59:1 and De Dycker in 2:00:1.
Race 1
JS7 win by 21 seconds over Pourcel and 33 over Philipearts. That's there best lap times;
JS7: 2:02:499
Pourcel: 2:03:369
Philipearts: 2:04:048
You gotta Notice that Villopoto finished 10th on his 250 with the 2nd fastest lap: 2:02:667
Race 2
Stewart finish 23rd one lap behind Pourcel but still got the fastest lap as he has run a 2:03:562 and Pourcel best was a 2:03:880.
I think stewart would struggle in gps, I don't see him adapting to the different tracks / set up very well at all. Probably be in the 5th-10th range (or on the floor)
would love to see dungey have a crack at gps, I think his style would suit the tracks better than rv/ stewart. He's a lot more smooth/ efficient on the bike than they are. Would love to see tomac/ canard have a go too! or any other top tier American racers!!! doubt it will ever happen, but it would be good if it did
funny that people are bringing up des nations rides from 9 years ago and 7 years ago to say they think stewart would do well. Its not 2006 anymore people!!!
I think if both riders were in there prime it would be very close.

I don't know for Trey but Eli is special. I mean, he is so much more physical and using the throttle like his motorcylcle is gonna pass in every ruts, deep or not and that makes him fast everywhere. ET has done 2 MXON so far and I remember that he was the fastest of the week end in both of them.
He was in his prime around the time of those MXdN and I think most people would agree that MX1 is a fair bit stronger today
People act like JS7's fell off the map.
Still one of the most gifted guys on the bike, and had RD5 covered in mx until his getoffs.
I think the American that would do the best over there would be Dungey. One of the smartest riders the sport has seen and he would most likely be on or near the podium each round and few crashes if any.
I also think Alessi would do very well on the GP circuit. The kid is pure motocross and I think the GP tracks would fit his talents perfectly
