Here's Roger DeCoster's take on Darrell Shultz's character and toughness when Darrell won the title in 82.
Darrell Schultz was our guy in the open class, and he won that title. He had a very bad knee. He had so much play in his knee that at times he could barely stand. We were very worried about him, especially towards the end of the year when he was in it for the championship. I remember him saying ‘Rog, don’t worry, I’m going to win’. He had such a strong mind, and was able to take pain so well. I tell you, that guy had character. It took sheer will-power for him to win under those circumstances. We won three out of the four championships that year.
That is bad ass and sez it all in my opinion.

Darrell was old school. Man he took some hits.
Came out of the hospital for Washougal two (?) weeks earlier, don't think he told Honda he was in the hospital or why, there kinda touchy that way. Magoo needed the medevac at Washougal. Kinda surreal, maybe twenty minutes after the second moto chopper comes in and lands on the start area, go to see whats up and there taking Magoo in a stretcher onto the chopper. Up up and away, just saw him finish the moto, nothing unusual. Turns out he got stung by a bee near the end and went into shock, Magoo was allergic. Just another day for either one of those two guys !
Must have been a pretty cool Racer X story.
Pit Row
That's an awesome pic in so many ways. Last 500cc National 1982 at Carlsbad. Front row there is Nor-Cal -vs So-Cal 2-1. Cantaloupi - Gerig - Shultz. Shultz needed a 10th or better, start at the front makes it easier !
