Is this a common thing in the US? Noticed it in the Glen Helen feature on the home page. I found it quite shocking to be completely honest. How can it be safe for guys like Andrew Short to be riding around with kids?

It's the same as when F1 drivers practice with kids in go-karts. Happens all the time.

i remember going to a Glen Helen open practice in about 2008, and was shocked at everyone out there together, pro's, 65's quads, it was a nightmare,

i have heard it has got better since then, but still it does not happen in any other sport

I go to Daytona in my little Fiat and ride the high banks with Earnhardt and Gordon all the time.
When I get tired I let my 6 yr old grand daughter drive with them.

THIS is how MX tracks operate....it always baffled me

If you live in Cali, then definitely yes. Glen Helen will have riders at pro caliber all the way down to 65 beginner caliber riding on the same track. Dangerous, yes, but riders get used to it.

I heard MMA fighter Houston Alexander used to spar with kids all the time.

I wondered if this bothered other people. I try to get down there to ride quite a bit, and even as someone who has raced pro and qualified for a national back in the day it can be pretty intimidating to have those guys out there. The hardest part is if you are on your first few laps and your trying to memorize the track while guys are blowing by at mach speed. Especially at the tracks with more jumps. If I feel like that I can't imagine how a novice vet or a kid would feel.
To be honest though the top guys are usually pretty cool and ride around you with no problem, it's some of the mid pack privateer guys who have attitudes. I had one guy push me off the track because I got in his way in the previous turn.

That's dumb and counter-productive. Is this true? Even a swimming pool has adult swim.

Not many tracks around here that run open practices. Must be Cali common sense.

I went to one of the Vic ride parks here in Australia for the first time while on Holidays for Easter Yesterday. Three of the tracks it was a free for all, from 65cc to senior riders, quads, pit bikes, it was a little hectic at times.

The "PRO" which was really the only track that had big blind jumps was senior riders only , with 2 x 30 minute sessions during the day for juniors only and then also a junior 50cc type beginner track.

It is not a common site in Aus, and you will only see it at the privately run parks and tracks, 95% of our MX tracks come under M.A (Motorcycling Australia) Senior and Junior riders are not allowed on the track at the same time and even some of the junior age groups have to be separated.

Also a very sad day Yesterday, at one of the other ride parks in Victoria a rider was landed on and went into Cardiac arrest and passed away.

From what I have seen he was in his early 20s with a young family.

The best is when they put the "fast" 80 cc riders out with the pros. Then they pass you coming into a corner and fall in the rut exiting the corner. The fast 80 cc rider is now a 80lbs kid with 500 pounds of bike and adult riding over him.

I'd let my kids ride with pros long before I'd let them out with 250 Novices...

This is so true. In my opinion allowing kids/amateurs to ride with Pro's is safer than having them ride with your local C riders.

What's more embarrassing is when the kid on the 65 passes you and pulls away.

I used to ride at a place near Lithgow where the track was for members of a farm stay type set up , you could ride horses or bikes and was family oriented but the people running it have no idea of how to do it properly , your allowed guests as a member and they pay so at times it got quite busy and I whitnessed several near misses, saw a little girl on a pink 50 cc quad riding the main track with guys on 450 s racing each other over blind jumps at the same time , all thru blinding dust because they refuse to water it . Terrible news about that young bloke in Victoria , public tracks need flaggies I rekon

I'm not worried about a national caliber pro landing on a kid riding a 60. Pros have a lifetime of experience.

I am worried about a spode like me landing on a little kid.

I've passed someone on a big bike on a KLX110 at Piru Laughing

I actually saw these kids at the Tyler Hoeft Ride Day passing tons of people (they were fast!) That must have been embarrassing too

Coming from a kid that was a competitive 85 rider in So-Cal, riding tracks down here every weekend, how is it ignorance if I was out there experiencing it? I'd purposely go out in the Pro/Intermediate practice at Loretta Qualifiers when I was racing 85's to see what lines they were taking. As someone said before, I'd trust having my kids out there with Pro's more than throwing them out there with novices or vet riders. Dirt bikes are dangerous, riders are jumping the same stuff at the local tracks, and mostly at the same speeds (being honest), so having them out there with Pro's is safer than novices because Pro riders are so talented they know how to maneuver around slower riders in a safer manor than those who aren't. Pro's aren't riding out there with PW50's, either, like you probably imagine, and if that's the case, point your finger at the parents not the pro riders.

Or point the finger at all parties concerned, track owners, riders, parents etc. etc.

Fcuking crazy!

Inexperienced kids riding with adults is just asking for trouble.
Fast kids with fast adults and groups by ability is the way to go, bro.

Fucking crazy!

If you have an inexperienced kid that is riding a mini bike why are you having them ride a track crowded with Pros?

Unsure

If you have a kid who is experienced (and fast) why not have them on the same track as pro/big bike riders?
