Had a 82 xr500 we used for whatever,even motocross it a year. That thing was fun as shit on dirt roads.
One day i was coming around my highschool with probably 200 kids out back. Pitch it sideways ,feet up full lock and it steps out a bit, a piece of rubber had gotten soft from heat and got between them throttle and the stop screw holding it at eigth open or such.
When it didn't shut it was to late ,spun,highsided and got slammed under it with me chuck taylor wound up in the rear wheel and sproket.
Got out from under,pushed it limping while 200 kids laughing,,go it over the crest and bump started heading home thinking my heel was cut off,nearly passing out.
Get home crawl into the basement and evaluate, think it is broken but only dad was home,not good.
I yell upstairs and say I need to go to the hospital.

In the best technology that was available at that time, the doctors rebuilt the back of his skull, with a metal plate. He was never able to grow hair on 2/3 of his skull, from that time on. As you can imagine, at 20 years old, that's a lot to absorb, at that age. Undaunted, that fellow came home, and married his sweetheart, my Great Aunt Rae. A woman who, blessed with movie star good looks, could have him left standing, for any man she wanted. They had met in Montreal, where Bill was from, just before he shipped out to Europe. It was love at first sight, and she said she'd wait for him. Apparently, that's what people did back then. They made a commitment, and they followed through on it. Ol' Uncle Bill died in 2013, and I last visited him in 2102. I listened to his stories, but those war tales didn't come from him. I heard them from other family members, Uncle Bill didn't talk much about his time in the war. Like most, so I'm told.
He didn't have quite the memory he did at a younger age, but he was still pretty sharp, for 90 years old, with 1/3 of his original skull. A wicked sense of Irish Catholic humour, and he had me laughing pretty hard at times. I have to wonder, what do fellow's like that, think about these fucking dipshits running around today. You know, these baggy pants wearing, bike stealing pieces of crap, who wheelie down public streets, then pummel the daylights out of some poor sap, who pulls out in front of a dirt bike, that they never saw, and shouldn't be on the street to begin with. Not much, I'd bet, but from what I'm told, Uncle Bill never had much negative to say. Maybe having your skull blown off by a German 88, will do that to you. As in, give you an outlook on life, that few can understand. Not one that leaves you an entitled piece of shit, running wild, with a total disregard for the law. We could use a few more people like Uncle Bill in the world, with a better outlook on things.

I'm only halfway serious. Riding down sidewalks and brazenly through intersections like that is crazy and people could get hurt. The cops rightfully have to try to stop that. As for the offroad stuff, chasing kids out of shut-down riding areas (happens all the time here) .....give me a fucking break. There has gotta be something better for Johnny Law to do than chase junior and his friends out of the county landfill, abandoned quarry, etc. I realize the law is the law and cops have to enforce it, but sometimes a little discretion goes a long way.
