Can a trainer improve A. Short's staying power at the front of the pack for the full 20 laps?

He has the speed, and is in pretty good shape. Top 5 guy for sure (he should be there always) but top 3 in 2015... maybe if he was in a bit better shape and had a bit more speed. It is possible and I think it is likely but he is just having fun, I don't think he is putting any pressure on himself.

As a note, he's been extremely sick the past two weeks. And due to the weather, he didn't even arrive to Daytona until 4am the morning of the race.

I'm assuming your not familiar with Shorts program. He has a trainer and is in incredible shape. He had been sick and was running on three hours of sleep. He'll be fine

Food poisoning at Atlanta. Check out the PulpMX show from Monday to hear his interview about it.

I don't understand how these riders are getting food poisoning all the time. I've never had it and can't say I remember the last time that anyone close to me has. Yet it seem like professional motocross riders are stricken with it all the time!

Shoot, for Shorty's age & tenure as a pro, I think he's doing incredible...especially when you add the riders he's up against on a weekly basis. He's able to wear all the hats he wears (husband, daddy, son, land developer & professional dirt bike racer) with equal success...plus, he's still one of the coolest guys in the pits. Not bad at all.

For starters...he's got Seiji. The two of them have a system that works.

Andrew's been doing this for a while and he knows what works. That's why he's The Test Guy on the KTM/WP Suspension Squad.

He knows he can run in the lead for 7 laps of the main when he's sick & tired. Literally...Sick...Tired.

He flew to Daytona from Texas in a 4 seater...no sleep...arrived 4 a.m.

So, he knows he can:

Pull a Holey all damn day.
Qualify Directly from the Heat.
Be in it for 1/2 the main when he's not 100% (he was in 3rd on lap 10)
Stay in it when he gets healthy
His laps will be faster & more consistent.
He knows his bike...and he loves it.

I'm confident that he knows all these thngs.

I'm lookmg forward to these next few weeks.

This ^^^^^^

Andrew is in very very good hands with Seiji. He is a quality trainer, knows his stuff very well and it shows with Andrew's longevity in the sport.

I know wwhat you mean. I had never had it till about 2 weeks ago. I ate some damn PF Changs and my girl and I both got sick. It made her throw up but I didn't. Even though mine was a mild enough case that I didn't puke, my stomach felt so bad and twisted and I felt like I was gonna throw up and I felt like death. I cant imagine how much it destroys these guys being that they have to push constantly against others that are healthy. But back to what you said I cant believe that with everything that's on the line they don't bring their own food and prep it. With everything that seems to constantly go around it would be hard for me to take a chance not doing my own food

I believe yes. I don't think any old trainer though. I think at his age the line between too much and not enough is so fine. I think he would need one that is constantly doing bloods and monitoring him day to day.

I don't believe a trainer setting up a basic training program would make any positive difference. If only he had Aldon money.

To add to that. Seeing Short, Reed and even Stewie being able to compete at such a high level at their twilight is signs of the talent level between 2003-2009. Maybe even 2001. Riders like RC, JS, CR, KW, Pastrana, MC. I think those listed and more had more talent than what we are seeing now. I truly think racing a 2 stroke for longer gives a rider more ability when moving to 4 stroke.

I know we like to say how deep it is now. It is. But the Depth is that there are a lot of riders that can win. Not a unique depth in ability.

He honestly doesnt need Aldon, he has Seiji and by looking at his results over the years and his longevity in the sport as I said in my last post they are doing a brilliant job.

Seiji is world class but doesnt make a noise or get the credit I believe he deserves. He quietly goes about his job and Andrew benefits from it. He is no fly by night and his credentials and accreditations speak for themselves.

Apart from getting good Starts, all that has improved is his road blocking skills.

You guys crack me up. So, as soon as they land, they need to head to a grocery store, or somehow bring their groceries with them in a cooler on the plane? Then, where do they store this food, then where do they cook it? On what? With what utensils?

If you look at what foods most commonly cause food poisoning it may give a hint as to why a lot of these guys are getting sick. Leafy vegetables, berries, tomatoes, sprouts, and tuna are responsible for up to 70% of the cases of food poisoning in the U.S, and organic produce seems to be no less risky and possibly have a slightly higher risk. These guys are on pretty strict diets which I assume probably are higher in these foods than most peoples. If they were like a lot of us travelling and grabbed some fast food or a nice steak they would be at less risk. I am not saying that would be healthier, but they would be less inclined to get food poisoning.

I always assumed that the factory guys had a somewhat full kitchen in the rig and someone in the crew was responsible for dietary needs. But I guess that is a wrong assumption? Do they eat at restaurants regularly? I just figured that they were on such a strict diet that restaurants weren't an option.

Stomach bugs suck so much. Between interacting with thousands of fans and eating inconsistent foods, you're bound to have some problems. I just figured they'd do whatever is necessary to avoid that kind of thing.

His family will race a few of the local series here in the Houston area and are all down to earth nice people that will always take time to visit with whoever walks up. At the same time his wife and father in law will all be at the front of the pack all day long and make for some great racing.

No, at least not in the Honda truck. They can steam, boil (sometimes) and grill. Most venues do not allow much cooking. During supercross they usually cater food. Usually one driver is responsible for cooking, but during the outdoors.

Hummm , I eat a lot of fast food due to work. Maybe that is why I haven't got food poisoning since going to Pakistan in the 80's while in the Navy. Deep frying must kill the gems..

I guess you didn't read up enough on the thread to see it repeatedly mentioned that Short had been sick, and because of bike trouble, had to catch the red-eye to get to Daytona with about 4-hrs sleep. Holding on to 3rd place on lap 10 even when he feels like utter shit tells me that he obviously doesn't need any real improvement in the fitness area.

The biggest component and contributor is the flying. You have recycled air at best with a flight of 100's of people of which more than likely 30% are ill and 10% of that seriously ill. All those germs in the plane will play havoc on Andrew's already fragile system from training, travel and racing and from eating dirty soil all week from training and racing.

For these athlete to fall ill is so easy and do.

Colonel is exactly right. I think in work experience, schooling and variety Seiji has lots more experience than Aldon anyway. Which I would credit to Andrew's ability to stay mostly injury free and the longevity of his career.

Andrew is riding the best he has since the year he was battling Langston for the 450 outdoor title. It's pretty impressive actually. One thing I think people forget is that I'm sure he can run Andrew Shorts lap times for 20 laps, but when you up your intensity for a bit to Dungey's pace, you will no doubt gas yourself and tire out. But that is how you learn and get faster. Eventually that 10 laps will turn to 15 and 20. Getting better never happens in your comfort zone, physically or mentally.

Mom's know how to store food and cook and are always prepared with the proper utensil's. So I say it's mom's. Everyone knows young wive's can't cook. That's why they get food poisoning, it's their wives fault.

Uh...sexist and funny as it may sound...

Trey DOES look well taken care of and DOES get on the Podium when Mom's around.

Huh.

Think I'm in trouble with Mom.
