Been running Motul 800 in my YZ since I bought it a few years back mostly cuz the previous owner ran it and threw in a couple of quarts when I bought it. I have no issues with the Motul (except price) bike runs great and no breakdowns. However I'd like to spend my money on an American-made product as I try to with most things I purchase. I'm wondering about Amsol/Lucas/etc.... Back in the 70's I ran KLOTZ and loved it. Anyone running KLOTZ today? I'm leaning toward LUCAS mainly because of their major sponsorship of the MX national series deserves consideration. Those of you running LUCAS please let me know what you think. Price does matter as I'm currently in school and working only part-time so every dollar counts. If there's a really high-quality product available that's cheaper clue me in. Please let me know what American oil your running and why you stick with it.

Lucas is good oil, but is a light viscosity, injector compatible oil. That means that you have to use more of it than a premix only oil. I run it at 24-28:1.

Start a thread asking what is the best premix a week ago, then recommends a premix to another member.

I was asking people for there opinions on different premixes as i was tired of ordering klotz. I have used maxima, klotz, motul etc and there is many more brands and i would like to have other peoples opinions on how they like them. I would argue i know a ton about premix, but at the end of the day i would like to know how certain oils have been with other people. I have used Maxima and i will say Klotz is better, much better. Klotz is a 5th grade Ester base, Motul is a 3rd Grade Ester. Klotz is around a 50WT premix and Motul around 40WT while Maxima K2 is sticking around 25-30. Klotz is the best USA made oil. Lucas is good if you are cheap, just run it at 24-32:1.

Just because someone asks for opinions does not mean they dont know anything about something. But then again, you must know EVERYTHING without even using every product to have a good judgement point. Il sit here and argue all day about the technical side of premix, but i wont sit here and talk about my expirience with all premixes and that is the exact reason why i made the thread. Looking at wear tests, the MSDS and all that is only so good if an oil runs like shit in a bike. Thats why i love getting peoples reviews on premixes before i run them.

I guess I should have provided a link to your post, lots of good premix testimony. I see where I was a bit dickish, I apologize. Maybe too many craft beers at supper.

I used Klotz R50 before and maintain all the bikes in my family. Little brother could not grasp the concept of proper warm up before using full power. Every tear down revealed some decent piston scuffing. I decided to use Maxima SuperM just randomly after a rebuild, mainly because dealer cost was better (dad owns a shop, parts unlimited dealer). Subsequent rebuilds showed near perfect pistons that I honestly felt bad about scrapping. This was enough for me to start using Maxima oils in everything we have, and recommend it to customers when working as a mechanic in dads shop. The past couple seasons since switching have been much easier on our wallet and have provided more riding time, less rebuilding.

It seems you have gained lots of useful knowledge on premix, I applaud you. Knowledge is power. But, I must say these "best oil" threads are full of opinions. And really, the best recommendation I can come up with is choosing a product that makes you happy, and proves itself with proper inspections when rebuilding. Riding conditions and styles/technique provide enough variables to make one particular product near impossible to nail down as "the best".

I didn't gain anything from that thread, My dad is the distributor for iPone oils in Canada. I have always known alot but like i said i like real world reviews before i use something. All i was looking for was opinions. If we speak technically, i probably know more than 75% of vital when it comes to oils of all types. Not to be cocky obviously, but it is like me pointing out you needed help resetting your hour meter so me saying you know nothing about working on dirt bikes..(obv not true)

We run a pretty popular shop here and 80% of our guys love Amsoil Dominator but i have never ran it. Everytime we crank into a motor that has ran it there is almost always rust and or major scuffing. Motul and Klotz motors are always the best looking.

If you tear a top end down, and there's piston scuff marks, is that a sign of improper warmup? Or is it a sign that you are using an oil potentially made by gypsies?

Thanks for all the info gentlemen. I still have a lil' MOTUL left to burn but will"vote with my wallet" and buy American when it's time to re-up. Still haven't decided on brand, but your insights have been very helpful. THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP.

Ive been reviewing oils lately as well, and noticed the flash points vary widely between types, most of the castor base oils are around 400 and higher, and the majority of the others are between 200-250. I didn't see anything listed in the 300's, which seems to me to be a desirable zone, a compromise between having to run a castor for film strength, and having an oil that won't load up as much at lower rev's.. (super M seemed to bridge that gap though, seems to have a good reputation too)

We run amsoil dominator in our bikes. I have a mod 125 and my kid had cobra 50s have not had any bad luck with the stuff at all 44:1. I am by no means saykg it's the best just simply stating what we use. You can also become a dealer and for 50.00 and get it for like 7.50 a qt.

I've run Lucas for a while now and have been pretty happy with it. I'm in the same boat as you, in school trying to save as much as I can, so having the lower price and higher volume of oil is great, not to mention you can get it at most auto parts stores. Like CamP said, it is a little on the thin side, so I tend to mix it at 44:1 or 40:1 for my 500 and 250, but I do 32:1 for the 125 since it gets ridden so hard. Make sure you drain any excess gas out of your tank before switching oils, I found out that Redline and Lucas separate from the gas when mixed together, so I no longer put a new type of oil in the bike without draining the tank.
