It's not 2001 anymore all the manufactures except KTM's listed weights are within a pound or two of actual riding weight, fluids and all. Example 2015 kx450 claimed weight is 247, pretty much exactly what it weighed. KTM's website list their 450 at 105.5 Kg or 232lbs.

Am I the only one here who rides his bike with gas and fluids in it? The only weights that matter to me are what I'm going to be riding on.

We don't have to assume anything KTM says it's 10 pounds lighter, which is amazing, hopefully other manufacture can step their game up.
But isn't all of that gas and oil just weighing you down?

^^sarcasm^^

Since all the bikes have different size fuel tanks the only way to get an accurate "comparable" weight is with fuel tanks empty.

That's just the only unbiased weight I've seen for the 15's so I posted it, and the original premise of my post remains the same, the 2015.5 sx450f does not weigh anywhere close to 220 pound. But it really doesn't matter for two reasons; Reason one is I'm anal about running out so I always just fill up full before I moto, Reason two is I can't tell the difference when I ride between a full bike and a half full bike. I bet I could feel 10 pounds though!!

The KTM holds 1.98 gallons. Now its hard to calculate gasoline weight accurately because its more dense as it gets cooler. Buts its about 6.5 lbs per gallon. So 6.5 x 1.98= 12.87 lbs. Claimed weight wo fuel on the 15 450 SXF is 236+12.87=248.87. Could 2 gallons of fuel vary 1.13 lbs according to density? Yea it can and scales vary but you are getting my point.

It seems to me that you didn't do any research regarding the current factory edition bikes before you spouted off about KTM making a claim that's untrue. The new bike is pretty much all new. New frame, swingarm, motor, etc. They replaced the battery with a lithium ion battery from the factory (couple of pound savings right there). When the manufacturers provide bike specs, the standard is full of all fluids EXCEPT fuel. It's just the way it is. There's plenty to be read about the weight savings and how KTM accomplished it.

Oh yeah, there was also an article where Vital was at the rollout and KTM weighed the bike and a standard 2015. The Factory Edition was the claimed ten pounds lighter. Unless the scale was rigged?!?

And to the poster who asked about price. The 450 is $10,199 and the 250 is $9299. Don't expect many dealers to move from retail since they won't have to. That's assuming you can still find one that has one available.

dont know how true it is, but ive seen people say its a lot easier for KTM to make changes every single year like they are and release the FE bikes because the company is so much smaller than KHI, HRC, ect.
make sense, the japanese bikes R&D is geared up to produce more bikes and have less room to make constant tweaks like KTM is doing.
and man is it making them look bad.

by they way KHI, HRC, etc do not make bikes.. Honda, Kawasaki, etc do.....they only produce factory race components, run race teams, etc.
how many "issues" do you get butt hurt about each week?

reminder to self: must use discretionary ignore.

KTM never claimed it to weigh 220lb. You're getting that confused with the weight limit of Dungey's bike. Dungey's bike is not the same weight as the 2015 FE KTM. KTM said it's 10lb lighter than the previous year, which according to the dirtbikemag scale, is 100% accurate.

I don't think the Japanese are complacent. Yamaha just turned the industry upside down with how good there 250f is. Suzuki may be a little behind. With that said, ktm offers better brakes(pick up a Galfer skw for $140)a hydraulic clutch(not everyone is a fan) and what else? Electric start? I have seem those bikes not start and run out of battery. The new FE are sexy looking for sure. But let's not jump on the wagon for no reason. The companies all take different approaches, and if you want to know what bikes are truly good, follow the privateer 250 riders. There was a reason they went red and green for 5 years. There is also a reason there is a sea of blue this year. Either way, ride what works for you, or what you can get for the cheapest and best support. All of the bikes are good

Thank you! Finally someone who has his facts straight.

Yes, 220 is the minimum limit for full factory 450s. The stock bike, because it doesn't cost $1,000,000,000, won't come close to that. But yes it is significantly lighter than last year's bike.

I have seen a shit load more people kick themselves to death than not having a KTM start. My bike has never failed to start in 4 years. Go to an Arenacross and tell me how many KTM's you see. At the Wilkes barre round over half the bikes in the main of Arenacross and Arenacross lites were orange.

How the fuck the yamaha turn the industry upside down? You're basing Yamaha's 250 on being the best bike in which aspect? The fact that pro's are winning in it? Around here Kawi's still dominate the the 250 class. I rode a new yamaha and aside from the front forks I could not see what the fuss was all about. But it was not set up for me, which would explain the fact that is pushes harder than salt n peppa, I guess.

If you're using what privateers are riding as an indication of what's good what isn't, you're only fooling yourself. Privateers follow contingency money. A manufacturer comes out with a good plan, guys switch.

When making a decision, the next consideration is what a shop will do for them. A shop is willing to provide support? They'll switch colors in a minute.

It happens all the time. Privateers are loyal to money and support. Not what they think is the best bike.

In reply to the previous two replies. The yamahas are gaining traction as the 250. Not from what is winning, but locally as well. The arena cross does have a ton of orange(contingency). Supercross is a different game, yamaha does not offer the level of contingency as ktm. But people are choosing them. Again, to each there own. I am simply saying that ktm has come a long way. To state that the Japanese are going to be left behind is ludicrous.

I know KTM never claimed 220, there were two post from people saying they might get one because they want a 220 pound 450. That's why I replied

The Japanese are getting left behind from shear stubborness (is that a word?). Like others said, KTM listens to the market. Japan likes to dictate the market.

If it weren't for that little AMA rule....the Japs would be completely up a creek. It's amazing how such a huge stake of their success is claimed on that one aspect. KTM would be fine no matter what the rules say.

Maybe its just me, but it seems like the Austrians are trying to make common sense, deliberate improvements to their product to actually make the bike easier to handle for the common rider.

The Japanese companies seem to be directed by the Marketing department now, instead of common sense R and D people.

I mean, I had air forks on my first bike, the 76 YZ 125X, and they didn't work very well then as now. And in regards to the dual mufflers, who can't see though that bullshit as a blatant attempt to get the first time buyer to equate it with dual tail pipes on a car?

Yamaha has to be applauded with their radical effort to open a new door, Im not so sure about the the other Japanese companies.

...and don't even get me started on much these pigs weigh.

it makes them look bad that ktm is selling bikes purely based on the fact that they are taking the response from the users every single year and usually making pretty drastic changes, every year being better than the last.
the big 4, not so much. i bet thats why you see a lot of people buying previous years bikes for cheap from the dealer. i'm not going to pay 1500$ more from a 14' to a 15' for some graphics, and anodized green pieces.
so why, since they started introducing the FE, that they win less shootouts if as you say they are always getting changes based on responses from users? Despite the FE it seems the Kawasaki and Yamaha win the majority of the 450 shootouts...

you are going to look silly when KTM does the air shock on their prod bike....as for dual mufflers, I love em, quieter bike and they look frigging cool

care to compare an 05' ktm450 with a '15 FE? then do the same with the KXF. see which one has changed more for the better.

not sure what youre saying. are you trying to imply that they were better before the FE releases? like they release lesser quality bikes due to having the FE model?

No I am not saying ANYTHING about quality dude....I am saying they have lost more shootouts after they release the FE rather than the other way around....you are saying that the Jap bikes aren't making significant or more user friendly changes than what KTM are yet the KTM bikes arent winning the shootouts since they introduced the FE ... go figure

well, all the magazines and user reviews never rate the bikes in the same order in 250 and 450 class, so i dont know what ultimate bike rating source you have to compare it to. but thats besides the point.
so how long till ktm trumps the big 4 in ratings?

Why are you putting so much stock into a magazine shootout? Very few (if any) are truly objective. If it were that easy, they'd be the same results in every magazine. But that's not what happens. It's all about advertising dollars. Don't forget that when bringing magazine shootout results into an argument about what bike is best.

lol ok although as stated in this forum a few weeks ago a LOT of people here do wait for the shootouts to see what is said, so yes they do play a big part in peoples decisions....as does dealer support, parts prices, locations of dealers, etc...
