While scrolling through the internet this morning at work the Ask Ping column caught my eye. A dad was writing about his negative interaction at a KTM signing. Instead of dwelling on the negative here in this situation, has anyone had an awesome interaction with a rider or riders?

As for me it was after the race at Red Bud this past year. My friends took me there for my bachelor party weekend (lots of booze in lot B ). We got the pit passes and after the races we decided to stroll through the pits one more time...
I noticed Ken Roczen and Villopoto just hanging out in front of the kawi rig. I went up and congratulated Roczen on his ride that day. He asked if we were enjoying the weekend. I told them it was my bachelor party weekend. Villopoto and his wife congratulated me and out of nowhere Roczen throws his arm around me, slaps me on the chest and says "congrats bro, happy for you!" Kenny proceeded to ask my buddy to take a pic of the 3 of us. We BS'd a few minutes and headed back to lot B.

This made the weekend even better. KTM and now RCH are lucky to have a stand up guy be an ambassador for their brand. Kenny and Ryan went out of their way to make a weekend even better.

So anyone else have any good stories?

HA! that was definitely in the back of my mind walking up. Surprise surprise, he's not a robot; just a regular down to earth guy. That can ride extremely fast.

Believe it or not - I met Tony Alessi at High Point one year. He was totally cool to me. We talked, took some pics, he said make sure you go to the pits and check out the rig, he was totally cool.

People are just that... people. Tony has some issues just like everyone. I'm not surprised he was cordial to you one bit. I'm sure that caught you off guard a little, with all the stories and what not you hear.

Me and a friend met Grant Langston a couple of weeks ago, we asked him for photos and he was very happy to oblige. He also stayed and chatted to us for a few minutes afterwards too, that was really cool. On the whole i would say that pretty much all the riders i've ever met have been happy to chat with the fans.

My son chased RD around for a few years trying to get to chat with him, Pala, a few Anaheim races, S.D. and while he raced the KTM challenge in L.V.. It was really strange, Ryan wouldn't even notice he was there. I started thinking to myself what an ass, he has a short career ahead (not him, all MX'rs) and he won't take the time to engage. So, after many attempts to just talk to the guy with no luck, we were at a Thursday GHelen practice day and RD was parked '20 away from us. He did his business we did ours, at the end of the day my son got the idea to go talk to him, he walked five feet away from me and turned around and walked back. I could see he already knew what would happen and didn't want to waste his time. Ryan saw him do this and called out to him "hey dude, what's going on?" My son turned around and walked over to him, they did the BRO down for awhile and chatted about the track etc. He was very open and outgoing this day. What I have learned personally about this is that different people need different amounts of head space and focus when they are at the races and that I shouldn't judge them for their own way they need to interact at the races.

On that note, we are super lucky to live where do, we ride daily with the best riders in the world. My son thinks he's one of them and constantly hangs out with the riders, RV, Mookie, Barcia, Seeley, Hahn, Peick, TC, Eli, so many… Two weeks ago Dean was at Milestone and after he pulled off the SX track, he went to the mani track to ride a lap with my son! It was pretty cool, they were high living when they pulled off the track.

I want to say all of these guys remember what it was like to be a kid with a dream, and they all treat them well.

Met Darryn Durham at washougal when he was out of a box van on a Honda. Just walked up and started singing the praises and throwing the horns. You could tell that him and his wrench were pumped, but also maybe a little shocked haha. It was sick tho he said thanks and gave me a high 5 or something and told me to keep throwing the horns a day when he was on the track. Got to tell my buddies and they were jealous.

Other time was when I met Broc Glover and we talked for a dolid 5-10 minutes at Seattle SX.

that's awesome man.

back in '95 we went to Washougal. MC and Factory Honda were pitting out of box-vans and we were standing in the sea of people trying to get his autograph. i was only 13 so i wasn't able to barge through. MC made sure to get to all the kids in the crowd first and then start signing for the adults. it was awesome, we got our pictures with him and he was very personable.

anyway, we get our pics and auto's and head to the back to just watch. this little boy in the middle of the crowd was crying because he didn't think he was going to get to meet Jeremy, well Jeremy caught on to what was going on and walked out into the crowd, picked the little guy up and took him back to his bike and sat him on it. it was the coolest thing i've ever seen even to this day.

SOME (not all !) people act arrogant and uninterested when really they are actually pretty nervous. It's kind of immature but it does happen so maybe Hill and Deano, which is who the raxerx story was about, weren't intentionally being rude.

I've had to do group presentations in college and as you're standing up there nervous as hell waiting for it to start you crack a joke or start a convo with the person next to you just to break the ice. The riders did the same thing at the A1 press conference. You could tell they were a little nervous so before it started and sometimes during it some of the riders would lean over and crack a joke to the guy next to them to break the tension.

That's a bitchen story. MC is a class act for sure!

I told it before but for me it was camping in the woods at Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium back in 2001. They held an MX GP there that year. Saw some Americans camping nearby and walked over to have a chat. It was dusk, and I didn't realize it until about 5 minutes into the conversation that I was talking to former World Champ Trampas Parker. He was so down to earth, just hanging with his American pals in the woods. Not as good as some of the other stories on here but it was my special little moment with a moto celebrity.

I met Greg Albetyn at Cahuilla once.

He made a joke about bad teeth & shitty food.

I told him to look out for wildlife on the track , especially Deer, and also move to the left when I came around to lap his fat arse.

It was all good.

Hansen parked his painted Toyota Tacoma truck at Pala while we were at training camp.
He did talk about plans to workout ride for return racing again. He was really nice to guy
he didnt know and who came from other side of world.
All mess he went by before seemed to be behind and he was on right track.
His return did take little longer but happy to see he got team running and is back.
Of course he did hit some table tops as double at track on same day that looked awesome as he made it look like nothing.

My daughter was working at the KTM booth this year at Millville, and she had pics and stories of wondering through the pro pits after press day and hanging out with KR and Dung and a few others just in a casual setting. I was actually a little jealous.

Saw Roger De Coster at Riga Airport as we were trying to pick up hire cars for the MXdN last year. Spent a good 10-15 minutes chatting, he had to time for us, respected that!

It's funny because back in 2006 Team USA hired out my Uncles track for practice in the lead up to the MXdN in Winchester and i had no idea who he was. I use to Marshal/be a Flagger up there between College and helped out on the day. For a couple of hours i was on (one of the two) gates and tasked with only letting certain folk on the guest list onto the site. Some old guy and a few others car turnt up in a car, the guy driving told me his name and he wasn't on my list. So i radio'd over to the track manager and he (pulling my chain) said ID the guy, naively i did, and yeah, it was Roger De Coster!

I can understand both points made by Ping at a signing a couple of years ago at a local dealership before the Atlanta Supercross. It was our first ever signing so we arrived about 2 hours early to get a spot up front in line. At 6pm, they introduced all the riders individually and they sat at one long table with their respective teams. The gamut of riders ranged from (at the beginning of the table) "privateer teams" all the way to Bubba Stewart (Team Suzuki at the end of the table). Riders that stood out: Bobby Kiniry: very cool and took the time to quickly chat before we had to move on, seemed happy to be there. Marvin Musquin: very nice, cool and signed everything we had, earned a new fan in the process. Ryan Dungey: (my son's favorite) had a quick chat, signed a helmet and hat and took a picture with my son to boot, class act. Weimer and Wilson: very cool, signed my son's hat and took a picture as well. Ryan Villopoto: didn't look up very much, looked tired but was respectful signing and took a picture with my son as well. At the end of the table, Milllsaps and Stewart (my fav): they talked with each other, no smiles and seemed uninterested to be there but signed a helmet for my daughter. I didn't bother to ask for a photo as I didn't want to interrupt. This definitely bummed me out but I chalked it up to them being pulled in a million different directions. I'm sure it gets old having to be here and there on race weekend and am sure they would really have loved some downtime before race day. I still root for all the riders regardless of that one and only interaction.

I don't recall meeting any pro racers. I did sit two seats down from Gregg Godfrey and "everybody's favorite redneck" at a supercross. My wife got her picture with them and they were very nice. Godfrey also gave my dad a vhs copy of Global addiction back in 2002 when his truck was repaired at the dealer my dad managed. That movie blew my mind at the time. I watched it just last week. I also drove down to Little Sahara to hopefully watch and ride with Renner on his freeride tour a couple years ago. It was extremely windy and I never saw him come out of the trailer. I guess I was a day late, because he rode the night before when the weather was good. I did chat with Steve Hauglestine for a while and he was really friendly. The only other professional I've met was fmx rider Dustin Miller at Caineville. He was cool too.

You guys and your "hire" cars! Was at a vintage race here in Texas and met a guy from Australia who had won a trip to the race. He mentioned when he picked up his hire car. I just looked at him like "WTF". Then it dawned on me and I replied "oh, a rent car". Then it was his turn to look at me like "WTF". Funny stuff, good times!!!

I took my brother-in-law to the nationals at Glen Helen one year... about 2000 or '01. This would have been when he was about 13. He wanted an autograph from Travis Pastrana, so we went over to the Suzuki tent during practice. TP came in all sweaty from his practice and noticed a pretty big throng of people was crowding around. I watched him put the bike on the stand by himself (rare) and then held his finger up, like "wait a minute" while he took off his helmet and ducked into the trailer for a second. I thought he was trying to ditch his fans, but he actually grabbed a towel and hacked and spit a big dirt clod into it. Then, before he even grabbed a bottle of water or took any time to himself, he was out giving high fives, signing autographs and posing for pictures. The only reason he paused for just a minute was so he didn't gross out his fans by spitting on the ground.
The dude is a stud and a gentleman.

I met Ryan Villopoto during the mammoth motocross in 2012 when he was injured. He was at Laka Nuki(restaurant bar) with Mitch Payton and a few other guys from Pro Circuit. While I was at the bar he came up to get a beer so I say hi and asked about his knee and told him to get better quickly because I enjoyed watching him race. He was extremely nice and hung out and had a beer with me(colors light)! I had the opportunity to buy one of his radiator shrouds at the Caselli ride day at LACR last fall. Now I just need a way to meet him again to get it signed but I moved to Oregon from CA.

Met Trey Canard at an IHOP in 2008, a few hours before he broke his femur at Washougal. My dad and I didn't want to bother them too much, but Trey and the GEICO squad were very friendly for the brief time we talked. Had Roger DeCoster and Mitch sign a jersey for me when I was younger in Seattle. Both were very friendly. Roger talked to my dad about the old Puyallup race when my dad jumped the fence to get in and talk to Roger and they talked about Garrett Wolsink. Mitch made a joke about the fact that my jersey he was signing was a Rockstar jersey. Last year we talked to Roger again, and he signed the front number plate from my dad's Factory-Edition 450.
