I then decided for reasons unknown that it was time to "grow up" and get a career in my field of education. Passed the CPA exams, and never applied for a single accounting position, instead I went into the Financial advisor world (easy transition with the sales aspect). I absolutely loved it and felt I had found my calling. Then I started a family, and realized A- I didn't want to be in the major metro area I was in and B- I didn't want to spend as much time away from the house as I was. Not thrilled on the idea of starting over and rebuilding my book of business in a new small area with less wealth, I went to work for a college as the Director of Veteran services. A fancy title for helping veterans (and active duty servicemen and women) through their educational careers. Again loved it, so much so that I started a small non profit assisting veterans with education benefits, employment, and housing primarily as a side project with a co-worker and Vet. The position was dissolved two years into my tenure as the college was going in another direction (despite having a 78% vet/active duty student population). I was offered the Fiscal Manager position within the college and took it. Sometime back I finally moved my family out of the city and bought some property in the middle of nowhere. I reconnected with a high school and college buddy and went to work with him as the CFO of his newly started construction supply distributor. We are now an international supplier and focus primarily in the base-core reduction products and or asphalt reinforcement. I still enjoy occasionally giving back to the veterans in many fashions and still have loose affiliations with the non profit. I still get to lean on my financial advisor experience when running the numbers. But the experiences I fall back on the most are my days within the industry so much was learned and gained and it has helped me immensely on my path. Not a day goes by where I don't think/wish I could return to an industry related job in some fashion, but for now I am content just riding with my children as much as possible.
I am pleased to see so many servicemen involved in this sport and forum and want to thank you all for your service. This is a great thread. Gives wonderful insight and perspective to a place often times perceived as being less than insightful...
One day I wrote an article on how to choose a motorcycle for a local magazine. Then I became a journalist 16 years ago and have done that ever since.
Military: 20 yrs Active Duty Air Force, from Bomb Loader on B-52s to an Engineer on Titan Rockets (REALLY cool gig)

Yep, you probably never heard of it. Basically, I travel the country and audit the Dr. Offices, clinics, and/or research centers that conduct the new drug trials you see advertised on TV. My job is to ensure the data and subjects meet all the study requirements so when it is submitted to the FDA the data is "clean". I also prep the sites when they get audited by the FDA.
Very lucrative work if you somehow figure out how to get into the industry. I knew someone that got my foot in the door. I have no background whatsoever that qualifies me for this job but I figured it out with on the job training. The main requirement is the ability and personality to travel each week. They actually pay my full hourly rate for all my travel time. Amazing.
My frequent flyer status puts JT$ to shame. 200,000+ seat miles this year alone just on Delta. 200+ different flights. All domestic.
