Edited Date/Time 12/23/2014 7:37pm
I guess this really isnt moto, but its cooler than quads. wondering if anyone on here has a prerunner type truck? i just bought a ranger today to start building mine. its all 100% new to me so its going to be alot of learning and it would be cool to have some advice from someone that knows about them.

Prepare to spend a lot more money than you previously thought haha! How gnarly of a build are you planning on doing? Full long travel kit, roll cage, bed cage, tubeframe, leaf springs, 4 link?

Check out www.dezertrangers.com. Lots of good info there. I have a built tundra and laugh when people complain about moto being an expensive sport/hobby!

i dont plan on spending lots of money and going all out, im in the truck less then a rebuild kit for my yz125. Its a 90 ext cab 2wd 5 speed. the 2.9 in it is on the way out, but im buying a 5.0 with a t5 in 2 weeks when my buddy pulls it from his GT. i should have the truck running and driving with the 302 for hopefully 1000-1500 all in. I want to try to stay around 4k on suspension and everything else really, which as im finding out is going to be very hard to do.

realistically i would like a truck that can take offroad whoops type terrain no problem. i dont see myself getting crazy with jumping it at all.

im interested in the best bang for your buck type stuff when it comes to it. I have a daily so this is just a toy for me, so it doesnt matter if its down for an extended period of time.

For what you want you are definitely gonna be over the 4k mark. I would conservatively say you will be in at least 10k, and that's being optimistic. Shocks alone are pretty expensive. Then you got tires and wheels and you're already close to 4k.

ive sat shotgun in one jumping some train tracks with well over 100 feet of air time, landing nose first in the dirt on the side of the road with nothing but a gouge on the skidplate. so id say so.

thats what im starting to find out. im hoping to be able to wait until i can find deals on parts used. are used parts something worth considering when it comes to trucks? or is there probably a reason its coming off their truck.

get a set of forged f150 king pin beams or any other forged un even f150 beams and have them bent. instant 6 over kit. coil buckets and bigger coils. build some radius arms. set of deavers in the back. simple bed cage. 16-18 inches of clean travel all around. at minimum some valveable shocks with resevoirs. unless you come across some really good deals this will be your cheapest route to have a decent truck. and a correctly tied in cage so you dont die.

an explorer 8.8 rear end is an ok step up and it has disk brakes.

Raptor's are cool (I don't really think that), it's just the type of guy who'd buy one is what i don't like. Posers...or is that brosers?

Thats just stereotyping, I'm sure a lot of guys in the industry drive raptors and aren't "brosers". They're cool trucks purpose built for offroad.

Because the new parts are so costly and the amount of time needed to custom build so much of the stuff is required, I hit several rounds of the torc series a couple years ago, made some contacts and bought a used truck at the end of the season... It needed some work and a new engine, but when finished was insane and wayyyy cheaper than attempting to build from the ground up....

You might wanna come down to a SCORE Race and take a look around before you throw everyone under that bus...

ill play this is the truck i race with. Big $$ to get to this level

And this is our pre runner. Bought it for $11k, center mount,4 link v8 caged front to rear, fox coil over and bypass all 4 corners and has A/C for summertime

take my advice and listen up. at this time it is alot cheaper to buy one that is already built and proven, had all the bugs worked out and less stress than building your own. I takes work and alot of it, if your keen on building your own check out dezertrangers.com and race-dezert.com shop section. go thru all the build threads and you will learn a ton.

Make sure you have a roll cage in it before you do anythig else, it will save your life,

Anything that will handle whoops at more than a crawl is going to cost big. Built a baja bug years ago and once it was all said and done It was more like a class 5... it had a full custom Lothringer cage and long travel suspension.. took a long time to make everything work right. I shudder to think how much I spent, but well over 30K.

Sold it for 16k.. sigh. Was fun while it lasted though!

It's worse than that. They don't lift the front, they drop the rear with a drop set of shackles. It kills the purpose of a truck

The worst I think is when a guy goes out and buys the camburg long travel kit, fiberglass bedsides, 8000 light bars, but keeps a stock rear end.

Closer than a stock ranger. Those are nice trucks.

Back to the Ranger:
Expect to drop $15-18 Grand on a working pre-runner. Everytime you do something, something else will break. So do it right the first time unless you want some shitbox that has fiberglass fenders and a cage but an actual pre-runner will cost more. Just go straight to camburg.com or do it yourself. Now if you are just looking to be a poser with glass fenders Fabtech all the way.

With all the project trucks that exist on Craigslist, why did decide to start from scratch?
