Whats the best way to build a practice corner rut in hard pack terrain?

Am I best to grab a shovel, and make a shallow V round a turn , and then just start rolling through it over and over?
Or is using a pick axe or similar to loosen up the dirt and then again rolling round a few times to make a groove?

Either of those, plus adding a bunch of water if you can, and you should get a decent rut going.

Don't make a V, make a U, but yeah the shovel will work best IMO. Matt Walker carries a shovel around with him at some of his classes

Training for mammoth a few years ago I couldn't afford tracks 3 days a week so I took a pick axe to a field behind my in laws and made two ruts. I made them just far enough apart to where I could shift into second (450) , stand up, before I had to power down again.

I did that little routine probably 1000 tines and I was shocked how much it helps. It really brings you back to basics.

Good on you for working on what most people over look now. It always makes me laugh how many people try go scrub when they can't hit a rut to save their life

Yeah I've kinda of learnt the hard way. Had a big race meeting over the weekend, and could not hit those inside ruts to save my life, was losing stupid amounts of time, and ending up popping out of them most of the time and into the hub deep loam.

Give me a nice berm to corner with and I'm all good, but cant hit a rut to save myself.

So now the body has recovered, want to spend a heap of time going back to basics, and hammering out drills as well as usual track riding.

Any other good practice drills anyone can recommend?

Figure 8 inside outside drills.

Place 2 markers about 15 to 20 yards apart. Dig a tight rut, water it as much as you can and roll through them a few times in both directions.

Now place another 2 markers about 5 yards outside of those. Leave this area packed.

Now drill in 10 lap steady paced laps trying to concentrate on hitting the lines, braking correctly and rolling the power on.

Repeat for both rutted figure inside 8 and flat turn figure outside 8.

Then 10 laps or until you make a mistake as fast and aggressive as you can go. Try and drop the times and executing 10 fast pace laps.

Finally start doing ins and outs. 1 corner inside rut then 1 corner outside flat turn for 10 laps then switch direction for another 10.

A couple of rounds of these drills will see a good 30 minute practice session all focussing on corner and braking technique. Repeat this twice a week for a good 4-6 weeks will vastly improve your corner speed and control.

Would I stay sitting down the entire time on the figure 8 type course mentioned above?

Get a ground breaker and a spade shovel. All you need. Oh and some water for sure is a must of course. Metal rakes are good for getting the smaller rocks out.

Is easy to make your skills lop-sided of you're only practicing corners to flat to corners. The transition from corners to jumping, whoops, ect is where a lot of people get lost.

Its funny you say that, the last couple times I've been riding I've been focusing solely on cornering technique (elbows up and square, foot up and in not out) and I've been faster and had more fun than ever. Same with when I went to the coast, all about corners. That's the essence of MX riding.

Dudes above gave great info for rut practice.. Circle drill with no rut is awesome for flat cornering skill. I like to do 15-20 passes at one diameter, then another 15-20 at a wider diameter, then switch directions.

Cheers bro

There is also the snail rut with a continually decreasing radius and the circle rut shown here with Shane Watts showing how to make one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=orFoicnjY9E...

Figure eights get you the number 1 plates! Love me some figure eights back in the day. Jump for show corner for dough. They help big time.
