How the '97 stands today. New plastics, graphics, bars and the Johan Luyten exhaust matched up to the standard tail pipe for now. Plan on tearing it down over the winter for a nut and bolt freshen up, add new tires and inspect and replace anything suspect.

I probably wont ride this bike (maybe one day), but the more I look at it the more I like it!! Probably wouldn't like it so much if I did ride it!!! Laughing
That thing looks great! I got a chance to ride one of these things again a year or two ago, and it was just as bad (if not worse) as I remembered, hah. But damn they look good!

I have a 97 250 also. Ride the thing nearly every week. Race Tech'd both ends, 265 big bore kit, pro-circuit pipe. As a matter of fact I'll be taking it to the track this afternoon. Yours look very good. Don't be afraid to ride it.

Hal you are right! I already have enough show bikes, therefore I have convinced myself that both the '97 and '00 250's will get ridden. I'm curious to see how good\bad the '97 is and it will be interesting to compare it to the '00!!

I might be crazy, but I've been riding this one since 2008. I had the forks re-worked with race tech valves and it is much better. Still can't get it to turn like a new bike though.

So,in the end..
is this frame so tiring as they use to say during its shootout!?

I'm probably not the best one to ask because I don't have a lot of experience on other bikes, but it's ok for me. I do most of my riding on a sand track. I also do some XC racing in Oklahoma from time to time and I'm generally competitive in my class (sportsman). The biggest difference I see is getting this sucker to turn, I've ridden a couple CRF450's and they turn so much easier. My CR feels like I have to "push" the handlebars to get it to turn.

I like the single radiator. I'm surprised that it's not incorporated into the design of the new bikes .

I love the first gen aluminum CRs. The bikes in this thread look awesome. I've got a 98 and 99 I've had since they were new. Here's a pic of my 99, still trying to track down a seatcover.

Thanks, I'm really liking the stock look on yours. Makes me want to go with the same look.

Any updates?
Few small updates!

Through this thread I got talking with Dogger and managed to buy a set of immaculate period correct Pro Circuit titanium footpegs from him. It was a real pleasure to deal with Don and I was really happy with every part of the deal.

I also acquired an Applied Racing top clamp from the States, which gives me the option of installing twinwalls in the future if I decide to ride this thing!

Luckily I had a NOS set of Tecnosel GP250 backgrounds in my stash. I wasn't too sure how these would look fitted but I took the chance and along with a set of N-Style SX numbers I think they turned out really well on the bike.

Next up was a set of NOS WC frame guards which I found on ebay in the States for an absolute steal. It had seemed a bit pointless fitting aluminium frame guards to an aluminium frame since there is no paint to protect, but I liked the idea of protecting the rear brake master cylinder. So I went ahead and fitted them up. I may remove the gear lever side guard at some point, we'll see!

I also fitted new OEM Carb vent hoses, a new twin air filter and some other bits and pieces; Works connection front brake master cylinder cover and enginer oil filler plug.

Here is how the bike stands now. I still plan on pulling it down to the frame at some point for a full resto when I get some of my other projects finished.

Apologies about the quality of some of the pics, these were taken on my phone. I'll get some better shots up when I get a chance.

Looks great! I was thinking about getting the works connection frame guards just for the rear master cylinder guard as well lol
And for future reference for anyone else, the 1999 CR250 came stock with an upper triple clamp with rubber mounted risers, so you can get twinwall bars if you want. That's what I did on my '97, just in case I wanna change the bars to twinwalls, they also raise the bars up about half an inch and cut down on vibration a bit because of the rubber mounted risers Cool

Looks good... I'm liking the green backrounds on those numberplates.

Hi, nice bike man. I picked mine up a few years ago off e bay, was a bit weathered but all original except bars & tyres (still original brake pads/chain & sprockets that were still like new) I don't think it had hardly had a spanner on it. The forks were really badly corroded so I got some '04 CRF450 ones and like someone said in an earlier post it transformed the bike, way less harshness & eliminated the headshake. Really good to ride now except I only take it out once or twice a year to keep the hrs down. Got a full set of OEM plastics & shroud decals from CMSL waiting for it. I think they got such a bad wrap because everyone was used to steel frames of the time but getting off modern alloy frames they don't seem near as bad. Really cool bikes.
