Awesome this is the kinda feedback (mostly) that I was hoping to get! He's already started going through your comments and here's a revised version of the grenade design. Since zippy asked, I'll re-share the link. Mxshirts.com Thanks to everyone for taking a minute to give me a piece of your mind.

I'm not to huge on the grenade shirts, but the Grip it and Rip and the Commit or eat shit shirts are pretty cool! Good luck with the project, hopefully it works out so the idiots on here can eat their words.

I still haven't decided if we are being trolled or not... these designs are just so uninspired that it is hard to believe that someone would sit down and say "now YES these will SELL!"

I do applaud the person for the effort, because that is what most people lack. But just take a look at some of the casual wear of a lot of the different gear companies make... ONE is a good example (although IMHO not so much recently, same with SPY). They have some really tight designs, but do you think they are just moving massive volume of casual wear? I'd be inclined to say no, it only supplements their gear business. I'm willing to bet that TLD moves the most casual wear aside from FOX, and comparing those two there is no doubt who has better stuff (TLD).

Your boyfriend has to ask him self what his designs are providing that aren't already out there by a hundred different companies. These just blend in with all of the other designs out there. I sometimes see adverts in RacerX for some casual wear companies or yet another mom and pop graphics company, and I wonder how they decided it was a good idea to go whole hog and invest that much resource.

Go back to some magazines from the 90s and early 2000s and look at the casual wear adverts from Xtreme gear... these quasi-motivational poster designs have already been done, failed, and disappeared rom the market a couple times over.

And lastly, since you asked for constructive criticism...

-The halftone dots MUST go.
-Every single font used in every one of these designs is cliche, doesn't fit with any aspect of the design, and no doubt came from a free font website. Tell your BF to delete 99% of his fonts... he should be able to get by with no more than 30 or 40 on his computer, and even them he won't use most of those.
-If he plans on selling this stuff, and from the looks of that website he is, he needs to clean up his artwork a lot more. For example, those grips on he Grip It shirt... he obviously just went to Blending Options>Stroke and dropped in an outline to the grips after he had used the magic wand and eraser tool to cut them out of the design. Then duplicated a layer and rotated it a bit. I can tell because the same bits of carelessness appear on both grips.
-Composition Composition Composition! Where am I supposed to look, where do you want my eye to go?
-Color Values. On the Grip It shirt, the backgrund is a very hard black, while the image he wants us to look at, the Grips, are a washed-out medium intensity half valued grey. It does not balance at all.

I agree with everything.

The hardest thing to get is the effort this guy is giving to the project. But he needs to go work for a established company and learn...... Then maybe try something on his own.

It's cool that you guys are trying to supplement for this expensive hobby but all the Grenade ideas are too much like Grenade Gloves. I would ditch those for sure.

I think that's actually an Andrew Short photo from a few years ago. I vaguely remember it used in some Honda marketing.

Sorry to be critical, but simply removing the logos doesn't allow unauthorized commercial use.
Luckily, that's a very easy image to replicate. You could go over to the REM track at Glen Helen and make a very similar photo.

Boyfriend here, I appreciate all the feedback but jm485 pretty much nailed it on the head. I have a great job and I am not looking to change careers into graphic design. I'm just looking to make a couple of extra bucks to help pay for oil, lube, parts, etc. I spend about $50-100 on riding a week and I am hoping to offset that with a side gig. I am not trying to compete with fox tld or anyone else that's why I haven't branded. In fact I kinda despise that whole "they're name sells" thing. I wanted to make shirts that actually spoke to riders (except for the grenade logo, that was just for fun). I'm constantly saying focus focus focus when I'm riding. And I ate shit hard a couple of weeks ago during a windy day. These "cliche" shirt ideas are not from browsing the internet and trying to copy other peoples ideas.

Having said all that anyone buying a shirt online would compare my shirt a
To a fox shirt when buying. I can understand that, I'm stuck with single color shirts at the moment because four color machine is about $500 and that's a little counter productive. I really do appreciate the feedback though and will probably remove all but focus shirt and rework that one as well until I have something really unique and awesome. The. Work on the next for a while, focus on quality over quantity. More than one person has said half tones have to go, so gone! What would be really cool is if you guys could post shirts that you like or would buy that don't have logos/ brands on them.

You're doing fine dude, there are always going to be people liking some designs and some people not liking them. It happens to every company. It's good that you are open to getting opinions.

Good luck.

I respect that. I hope you pull in the $100 a week to keep riding, because we all know its expensive as hell as a hobby a passion or anything else these days.

Shorty had #51 a few years back (06-07? same year he was in contention for Lites West) when he was on a factory honda crf250, which would explain the dual exhaust as well. I just assumed it was Barcia, which would also be an issue if they used that image, too..

Rather not... Plus this is a pretty fun hobby so far. We have enough money for him to ride and race it's just that it would be nice to make it easier. Plus he rides 3 days a week and works four so that only leaves nights open. I don't think people would appreciate a leaf blower at 9:00pm

In another post there was some talk about making some James Stewart tees. If you made some #259 shirts and bring back some old school colors like black and fuchsia colors i think you would sell a lot! Imo

You need to get better quality shirts, the art is cool and i'd rock some of the shirts, but t-shirt quality is horrible to say the least!!! Tell him when you dummy model the shirts to have then fit correctly, it is very important in generating sales!!

I originally posted in this discussion because I'm a closet obscure t-shirt purchaser. I have a closet full of shirts that most anybody never knew existed. At this moment I'm buying up FTW.co shirts like it's my job. FTW.co shirts are Beefy T's and the screen printing is some of the best I've seen.

Hey those are a pretty cool. Thanks for sharing that. It's pretty tricky finding little companies like that. How did come across his stuff? I see what you mean about the shirt quality too. We will definitely focus on that.

I wouldn't wear any of them if I was his sponsored rider and the shit showed up by the case full.
You said you wanted honesty, and I am a designer, so there you have it.

I guess a nicer way to say it is that they look extremely Local.

I am sure the "non-local" designer (thefactorypilot) is the type that thinks his designs are worth thousands of dollars and just to do a mock up is several hundred. Design school will not help someone who is not completely dedicated to his/her craft and sometimes, they are a lot better than anything they can learn in design school. I hate the superiority nature of most "designers". ANYONE can be a designer. It takes a bit more to be an ARTIST! Ask Troy Lee.

To the one that designed the shirts and posted them here....dont listen to the ass jerk. You did good. If you are the type that spent a couple of hours on a design you are proud of it, I am sure you can sell a few or a few dozen and who knows more. Dont be "that guy" that spends countless hours on something trying to get the perfect composition, trying to get the details exactly right, and by all means, use the blend tool to produce effects when you want and if you want to use half tones, go all the way with it. They are just tee shirts in the end. Just telling you dont let one person knock you down for it. Art is art....theres no rhyme or reason and definitely no "composition required" for it.

Ive been doing artistic/illustration/screen print art and other printing art/ for 25 years professionally and very happy to share any knowledge that you may want to know.

http://bostonartist.deviantart.com/gallery/

Ive never stepped foot inside of a design school.
