Yeah, I raced an '82 KX250 for the first half of the year. It screwed me into the ground on a few occasions, so I sent it packing and got the RM.

For those too young to have experienced the original Full Floaters, all the gushing over their performance isn't exaggeration or just a bunch of old guys with foggy memories - it was that good.

The "floating" design resembles an automotive type suspension with none of the suspension forces fed directly into the frame since the shock wasn't mounted to it. The largest forces fed into the frame were at the pivot points for the rockers.

Don't believe it was a superior design?

Then ask yourself why Honda would resurrect it 20 years later and still use it today -






The Unit Pro-Link is essentially a Full Floater flipped upside down - rocker at the bottom and swingarm mount at the top.


I've wondered if it would be a good fit for the YZFs with the "reverse" engine since they don't have to worry about the airbox space like the RM did. They would really stir up a bunch of us old guys if they tried it! Woohoo

[img]wow, i dont know how i missed this thread back then. i had an '81 and an '82. i think the '81 handled a tad better but the '82 was just fine. i really appreciated the '82 reed valve setup for tight sections, it was the bike i turned pro on, almost makes me a bit misty eyed looking at these pics
