I've heard so many great things about the Frenchman over the years and I plan to do some digging for videos to see what it's all about. I had taken a hiatus from following the sport during his time in moto, but I wanna fill in the blanks.

Question: Does anyone have any specific races that I just HAVE to see to give me a taste of his greatness?

Thanks for giving me the opportunity to rewatch some videos Smile

1. There are many races uploaded if you click on the years you want, for example:
http://www.jeanmichelbayle.fr/html/1988_1992/1991/ANNEE_1991_SX_US_250…

2. then you can visit also http://www.jeanmichelbayle.fr/html/Goodies/VIDEO/VIDEOS_DIVERSES.php
where you can see for instance:
http://vimeo.com/48724023
http://vimeo.com/48724021
http://vimeo.com/48722784 (i.e. at 1'04, passing ward at MXdN, lechien at 1'26, both in 88, he was world champ in 125, matiasevich at 2' in 89, cooper in 90 at 3'10, jmb technical style!, Bradshaw 91at 4'48, 92 from 6' where you can see how smooth he was on the bike that won c-ships until 96, retiring from mx at 23 at 7'...)

There are lots of videos here. In terms of specific races, it is difficult to tell, a bit like if it was for RV. I think in french memories, all Bercy races especially 88 & 90, Parc des Princes 91, MXdN at Villars in 88, Gainesville 89, then many in 90/91/92... I still think he could have won the SX championship in 90 & 92 (shoulder injury twice, a bit helped by MXkid then Stanton, both team mates).

In term of greatness, it was not dominant like MC or RC, but he changed the way bikes are ridden in whoops, to stay low, in term of lines to ride clean, to stay more up on the pegs. He used a lot of rear brakes as well. Probably the best rider between Johnson & MC era (89 to 92). For me he has been like Bailey's ghost, to take a revenge, as his style was very similar, I would suggest you search videos of him too if you want to ride smooth !

Enjoy !

Sometimes he would ride high in a bowl turn before the whoops and stay at the top all the way to the end of the berm. From there he would just hop off the end of the berm on top of the first whoop and already be skimming them while everyone else was trying to still get on top of them.

I never saw anyone else do that, simply awesome!

His most memorable race for me...I cant remember where it was or exactly which year but...It was an sx race, either 91 or 92, March or April and was somewhere in the southeast, outdoor stadium, I think. Ive casually looked a couple times on Youtube but couldnt find it.

Anyways, there was a NASTY set of whoops where you had maybe 8 whoops, a hump in the middle then eight more. The usual guys(Stanton, Cooper, Chicken, Kied. Bradshaw) were up front in the main making multiple passes for the lead, mostly in these NASTY whoops where they were jumping and hopping there way through. JMB is just chillin' behind this lead group, studying lines, watching, waiting...about lap 14 hes passes the 5 or 6 guys in front of him mostly using a superior line through the whoops in the course of a lap and a half and motors away for the win.

The next day at the races a guy and I went on and on about it to eachother how great JMB was.

Go to PulpMX and find a podcast about Dave Arnold. There are two of them. They are long but very informative. The history of Team Honda MX. Very good podcasts.

Jean-Michel's two best Bercy races are also two of the best races I can remember there (and there has been quite a few!)...

1) This is 1991... Bayle has won every US championship : SX + 250 & 500 Nationals... Big rivalry with Bradshaw. Tonight, things are reversed and JMB is on home turf. They get together, Bayle throws his goggles out and gets roost in his eye one lap later, letting Bradshaw back by... Then (goggle-less), he passes Bradshaw back, then Everts on the last lap and finishes close from race an excellent Larry Ward. Unbelievable performance by JMB (who is also going to win night 4 - Bercy was su huge by his time that we ran 4 nights in '90 and '91)...

(from 7'44'', sorry, it's in French)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rj_iYLWmYC4

2) The following year, 1992, Jean-Michel has announced that it was his last season as an MX rider, as he was going road racing for '93.
He still was in contention for the title until a rough pass from Stanton at round 15 in San Jose saw him crashing.
Bayle and Stanton have never been friends but this is the pinacle of their rivalry. JMB is pissed.
Next and final round in LA, he'll try his best to not pass Bradshaw, who was in the process of giving away the championship to Stanton (Bradshaw was so slow that Bayle ended up passing him, though, when it became obvious that the title was going to be Stanton's).
Now we are a few months later at Bercy, Bayle is focused on road racing already but this is his farewell Bercy.
At Bercy 1, in 1984, when France was initiated to SX, he was a minibike phenom, watching Bailey and O'Mara in awe and telling himself that, one day, he was going to become the best at at this game (which he accomplished in only a few years).
So, although not very well prepared, JMB is highly motivated to finish his SX professional career in that stadium and on a high note.
But Stanton is at the top of his game and dominates the local hero on nights 1 and 2.
On night 3, Bayle gives everything he has and trails Stanton with two laps to go.
This is the last chance JMB has to beat his rival, ever.
Just watch what happens then (you gotta love the british commentary)...

The race that sticks out to me is the 1990 Supercross at the Rose Bowl. He didn't win that race but he was doing lines and jumping some combos that no one else were. I distinctly remember thinking "this guy is going to be great". He got third so I don't know if you could really see what he was doing on the TV version. Maybe you had to be there.

I remember the "fans"(and a few other riders) treating jmb like dogshit while he was here. No wonder he left the sport. He deserved way better than he received by the sport in America. Probably would've been the goat if his heart was in it. Bayle is a legend and I am lucky he rode when I was able to "see"( in the mags and videos of the day) him at his prime. His ass kicking of everybody at the 88 (i think)mxdn on a 125 was awesome .
