Guards or braces?

I wear some thinner fox guards that are pretty comfortable.

FLY RACING PIVOT 5 KNEE GUARD
If you're not wearing anything right now, anything will feel a lot better. When I started focusing on gripping with my legs, my knees were getting all sorts of trashed. I put on some pretty simple padded guards and haven't had any issues since.

One of the thing I have noticed is the guards similar to the ones you posted are much bulkier than they appear. Just something to think about.

I recently purchased these Leatt knee guards

I really like them. They are comfortable when riding and don't float to the outside of your knees. The straps are comfortable and, even though they won't protect you as well as a good set of braces, there is a bit of hyper-extension protection because the joints are hinged.

They are similar to the Fly guards being posted. I can't you tell which is better because i've only worn the Leatt guards. It looks like the Fly guards are $10 cheaper. I went with the Leatt only because a friend recommended them as "inexpensive fake knee braces". That's pretty much what they are but the protection is great, they are light and comfortable, and I feel well protected for the money.

Thanks man. Yeah I have been wearing the Fox Titan shin and knee gaurds, been wearing that style for years but like you said I'm using my legs more and my knees are getting trashed. I have been leaning towards these because the Reviews have been excellent.

I've been really thinking about ordering the leatt guards. I'm 6" and 180lbs what size do you think I need? My ten dollar cycle gear guards arent cutting it.

I've been running the fox titan knee guards since 2010 and really like them. When you pick out the ones you want also get some "knee brace socks" they make a huge difference!

I have been wearing the EVS SX01 braces for years and, for me, they are a good compromise between full-blown knee braces and knee guards. They are cheaper, not as bulky, won't shred your graphics (as bad) and you don't need a sock.

I have a set of Thor Force knee guards that I've been using a couple of seasons. The protection seems good, they are hinged to offer some brace-like qualities. The comfort is hit-or-miss. You have to adjust the upper velcro closure set just right or it will rub your leg raw. I always wear long socks or knee brace skins to help with this.

Yes- bought a pair before the start of last season and I am very happy with them. They seems to be a cross between a knee/shin guard and knee brace.

Those Evs seem decent. On the cheaper side of the way they are constructed. But better than nothing ya know. I also had good luck with the fox titan knee bad.

Personally, i recommend the Fly 5 pivots if youre not going with actual braces. The cup over the knee covers the areas where the bars might hit and i havent had any issues with them sliding down. Pm me if youre interested in a set, I shattered my kneecap awhile back and my knee is forcing me to get an actual knee brace so ive got a set i have no need for.

For example..How does a fitted knee brace prevent ACL tears? Maybe ask Millsaps, Stewart, RV, RC, and everyone else wearing one when they tore up theirs knees..

Brad don't tell me that a custom brace doesn't help to prevent injury? Obviously nothing is bullet proof but a custom fit quality brace is much better protection than some off the shelf shin guards....
I suppose no one has every suffered a concussion either while wearing a 500-800$ helmet?

I have the fly ones. They're not bad but I found the straps uncomfortable without a knee brace sock and you have to adjust the straps just right to get them to stay in the right position.

They're also 10 times as much $. I used to ride in Thor Force knee guards that pivoted with the knee. But I have to say I don't feel much safer wearing asterisks other than additional protection from hyper extension which is pretty rare injury unless you're racing and get rammed in the knee.

Knee braces offer better support but they don't do a whole lot more than a knee guard when it comes to twisting forces unless you have an anti tether strap hooked up which is annoying. Knee braces are great don't get me wrong, but if you're on a budget I would put knee protection high on the list of equipment to get but knee braces themselves way below good boots, helmet, chest pro, etc.

I was fortunate enough to grab Asterix Cell knee braces for $200 for both knees. I now swear by them, sure I'm probably never gonna have the cash to buy them new but if you can can find them second hand even in bad condition(you can send them off to Asterix to get refurbished) they're well worth it.

If you are looking for knee pads, you need to find a short pair because they will not fit into your boot. Or you buy a long pair and cut them down, leave the padding on the bottom part, though

Sweet, just the thread I was looking for almost about to create the same thread.

I was mainly looking at less bulky guards especially the slip on with rubber compound anyone tried these? (Maybe mountain bike type?)

I was curious about these also?

Yeah they're a great design, they're not even just good at stabilising, I reckon they offer a lot of impact protection too, sure they're not invincible but they'll do a lot more then plastic will. Very flexible and unnoticeable.
