I'm sure your dad is looking down on you too Dan. Again , I'm really sorry to hear about it , but it seems your dad will be remembered by a LOT of moto heads around the country. And that's saying something!
Sorry to hear about your Dad, I never met him but Indian Dunes really was the greatest place to learn to ride any type of dirtbike back in the day. It had FIVE different type of tracks and each one was very unique.
I feel so lucky to have ridden back in the Golden era of dirtbikes, the MX explosion, the Dunes and your Dad provided us with memories that will last a lifetime.
I never thought about the Moto D connection, but you have a very valid point. The sand section you dropped into on the Shadow Glen was so cool and where I won my first moto ever on a 75 RM 125. Remember it like yesterday. Donnie holeshot Hansen absolutely ripped on that track along with Johnny O.
The international track was completely different but would get a lot more whooped out.
That's a cool pic of Donnie and Magoo from there. I was actually there that day. It was midweek and Motocross Action was there doing a photo shoot with Danny. The pic wasn't even part of the track, he was riding up the bank by the first turn. Then they took the tank off and he still jumped it!
Anyway my condolences for your family and close friends, Gary will be missed but not forgotten.
Here's a pic of the international track on one of my first rides on my 77 RM125.
