I will never forget the first time I saw Jojo Keller ride and couldn't believe someone that big could ride that good! I was only 13 years old and just getting into the sport. Then at the last Southwick of the year in 1993 someone on a Honda with the number 16 came out in the expert class and smoked everyone! It was his birthday and we happened to park right next to him and he offered us cake and was really nice. He pitted out of a Nissan pickup truck with one CR125 and we didn't even know it but he just clinched the National championship! Doug Henry was my new favorite rider from that point on! lol

Pat Barton has dominated at NESC. Ryan Abrigo was superfast at a couple of Washougal races that I was at.

There was another guy in Norcal, in the mid 70s , Name; Alex Jorgenson, that was primaraly a smooth track rider with high National numbers. He would show up at Dixon about 3-4 times a year and smoke on one of those evil Can-Ams......It was embarrasing for the regulars.

Caleb Bertrand from Lake Charles Louisiana. I think it was the first year Pala was added to the nationals. It would be the first and only time Caleb would race a National. I think he placed 23rd in the 250's the first moto. The second moto he was running around 19th when he knocked himself out. That was one brutal track that day. Anyway, he still will tear up most, if not all the guys around these parts. I actually kept up with him for a few laps at my home track. But, the track was smooth and I had a cheater line...Lol

Todd won the 1979 100 cc Amateur Nationals in California with like a 4th and a 5th place finish.I went with he and his Dad out there.I can't find any results or info on that race or the year after in Minnesota. He moved out west and lived with Brad Lackey but took a couple bad spills on those blue grooved concrete California tracks.Todd was my best friend until I beat him a couple races..LOL

Mark Ashworth was amazing.I watched him at a track called Barney Doogles somewhere in S.C.,the first turn was a wide sweeper and he looked like a flat tracker! Never let off the gas!

Lost track of Todd but now that you said that I vaguely remember hearing about him going out west.

Barney Doogle's Rocket Raceway....
Now that's a blast from the past! Was it in Anderson, SC or somewhere else in the upstate area? Can't recall the name right now but there was a little red headed kid that just flew around that place. Remember the jump half way down the start straight?

I remember Mickey Boone. But, I remember his Mom even more. She used to sit in the grandstand close to us and yell "ON and GONE, Mickey...ON and GONE". It used to crack me up. Laughing

Chappy Blose, Carlos Serrano and Gary Dirks were probably the three fastest Phoenix locals, when I was racing in the late 70s early 80s. Chappy got a Factory Kawasaki ride in 79 & 80 and got 8th OA. in the 125 Nat. in 1980. I believe Carlos had a Factory Maico ride, and Gary rode for DG.

Chappy owns his own commercial fire sprinkler business in Arizona. Carlos owns a shop in Tucson. Both are quite successful business men now. I'm not sure what Gary is doing, but know that Chappy and Gary are good friends and respect each others riding talents from 'back in the day'.
