Covington staying in Europe

I know there's a thread about him already but it's from the beginning of March and you have to scroll down quite a bit to get to this new article. I don't read any language other than english, but supposedly Covinton signed with CLS Kawi to ride MX2 for 2 years. I thought he signed with Mitch and Pro Circuit? I knew he was using the GP's to "warm up" but maybe he just really likes Europe? Maybe he doesn't like SX?

Maybe riding against the B class guys made him realize he's not good enough to compete the bests?

Probably more money. Pro Circuit uses finish based pay.... Which can hurt new riders/rookies. If he can get a good base salary there good for him.

As Searles replacement I presume?

Lupino hasn't had the best start to 2014, could be what he needs.

The plan was that Thomas Covington World Championship MX2 would leave. After four games The American would use the Grand Prix in preparation for the AMA Motocross Championship. The plans have been modified, Covington has signed a deal with Team CLS Kawasaki. The 18-year-old motocross will compete in the M2 class. For the team in 2014 and 2015

Good for Thomas! I think he will do well and be a contender for consistant podiums by seasons end.

How Trampas Parker/Bob Moore of him.

I think its cool. He'll come back to the U.S. a much more rounded young man....and he'll suck at supercrossTongue

The way PC pays might hurt new riders or rookies, but it sure motivates them to bang their way to the front. I think it pushes a rider to a higher level quicker than if the pay was based on contract salary.

Back on topic though...staying there might improve his race craft.

I think it's great he's staying over there! He could learn a lot and get to travel the world. Some kids go pro here in the states and never get that opportunity......so I see it as a good thing and a great life experience. I think it helped Osbourne and he said that he had a lot of fun doing the GP's. Good for Thomas!

I get that Mitch doesn't give big salary contracts and likes the incentive based pay, but can Covington really make that much more over there? I guess my real question is....do the GP's pay THAT well?

I do not see how Mitch had room for him in the US anyway. When he had 6 guys under contract Mitch was saying he may clip someone for outdoors if they were not performing in SX. Covington would have made it 7 guys on the team. Granted maybe that "clippy clippy" was just a motivating factor to keep the riders on their toes.

As of now PC looks to be starting the outdoors with 5 riders since Ciancirulo had surgery. Durham should be back along with the rest of the squad who are currently finishing SX.

Covington getting a deal with PC never made any sense to me in the first place, Mitch does not usually hire the 5th place guy from Loretta Lynn's along with the fact that he already had 6 riders under contract. The two guys who were much better than Covington at Loretta's have struggled most of the year in SX.

The talk of who his dad works for seems to be a huge factor in how he got his foot in the door.

I dunno about the lower tier guys...but obviously the top tier riders like Herlings, Cairoli & others seem to think so. The chance to see the world would be a cool thing too for a young guy like Covington. Heck, he might turn out to be one of the only USA riders in a long time to beat the Euros on their own turf. That would be cool.

Yeah, I never really understood Mitch signing Covington either. I know Geico has a few of the top amateurs signed and yamaha has a couple too. It's still kind of weird for Mitch to go after a "5th place guy." I remember reading somewhere that geico/star/etc. were getting the best amateurs to sign with them by locking them up early, and Mitch doesn't like doing that. The only exception he made was with AC. Mitch might have to change his way of thinking if he wants to keep getting the top 1-2 guys instead of the top 5-6.

Regardless, I hope Covington does well and has a great time traveling all over the world!

So Lupino ,gets the flick , 8 riders age out of MX2 at the end of the year,so when they go who is left.. I stick with my initial statement that Covington can't ride SX and won't find a seat as result, and daddies cash has found him a place . He can ride, and will definately be a better bet than Lupino, who has taken mediocrity to a whole new level

Lupino has had a pretty crap start to 2014, but he's still outscored Covington at two of the first three GPs.

He had a few pretty good rides last year, remember he finished 8th overall which was a fairly big improvement on his 11th overall in 2012.

Yeah Thomas has also had 3 mechanical DNF's also. He was running 8th in brazil and moving up when his bike died.

I think its a good move. The CLS squad have some great guys, with experience and success both sides of the pond. He has shown potential and importantly, speed. There is no way someone can get to that stage and get decent point regularly without talent, and people need to remember that. Plus the different style, and more diverse rounds of MXGP will stand him in good stead for motocross anywhere in the world.

He ages out at the end of the year and manages 8th , when searle , van hoorbeek, ,paulin ,and Simpson left... Not good

Who cares who is dad is the kid can ride and has put himself out there more power to him I say. If I was a young american id want to do the same there are other places than the usa its like one huge holiday doing the thing you love shame more young americans are not open to it. I hope he goes on and wins a title in the future. Osbourne would have been better staying in gps and carving a name for himself as well.
