is he shifting at all? it almost sounds like 3rd gear all the way, my bro sez no way...using 4th and 3rd.

Just watch the race bro. You see him downshifting in the air all over the track to setup for the next corner. I'm sure he has a works transmission so who knows what gear he is in.

He's most likely using 2nd and 3rd only. Possibly 4th, depending on what track it is and how the whoops are. But for Toronto, I'd be surprised if he went above 3rd.

Not to mention he has a custom transmission that may only have 3 gears or so.

Like Jason said, he will shift down in the air before a corner and probably shifts back up in the air of rhythms. I'm sure he tries not to shift on the ground. False neutrals are scary!

Last weekend when he mentioned during the post race heat win interview that he knew of a couple more options for the rhythm sections but they would "need to make some changes to the bike first" I had a good idea that they probably needed a gearing change so that he could get that triple/triple coming out of the corner in 3rd.

I was exaggerating, but I wouldn't doubt it. They could have his transmission and gearing set up to use only first and second rather than second and third.

I'm like 90% sure that he was in 5th gear the entire time. That's a 450 right? Maybe 6th then... I hear they gear these bikes for drag racing down the start, the rest is the riders problem to deal with.

It makes sense to me, but are riders trying not to shift on the ground before jumps? Are they dialing their transmissions in so that this is possible?

Only clicking up in the air and before whoops?

I'd say yes, 2/3/4/5 gears of any ratio they want.

I would imagine that being able to hit the face of big jumps with exactly the gear ratios needed to clear them would be an advantage.

and I think that that's how js7 can do that stuff, his bike has (for all I know) had different set ups to others, forks the most

and with his skill can pull that sh1t off, that others cant.

speculation though

I'm far from an engineer or a mechanic, but my guess is that they change the transmissions internally to provide smoother shifting and less possibility of hitting false neutral. Then they can fine tune it more with the sprocket ratios.

Also, less shifting = less time wasted, as long as the bikes still under power. But that is kind of obvious.

I remember an interview w/ Tim Ferry I think. It was a while back. Maybe he was on a 426, but he said Yamaha just took 1st gear out if his bike to save weight. Had no use for it and I think he only used 2nd for in the pits so he never had to worry about hitting neutral.
I'm thinking back like 12-13 years here, so forgive me if I'm mistaken. Wink

They may used to have been allowed to do that. I actually heard one time that the factory guys used 3 speed transmissions since they didn't need 6+ gears on a SX track. But according to the 2014 rule book "Number of transmission gears must be the same as the homologated model". I'm sure they do a lot of adjustments to the ratios.

I only used 2 for the start and 3rd the rest of the race when I race a The Star. Automatic Tranny.

Back when YoT had Chad Reed on the YZ250F they went to some wild sprocket combinations in an attempt to take some of the load of the tranny. Wish I had some pictures of that.
