L4-L5, L5-S1 bulging / herniated discs here as well. It was about a year ago when my back completely went out on me. I was pretty much incapacitated for a few days. Physical therapy, stretching every day, proper exercise, strong core, and inversion table are what a I attribute my recovery too. It's something that you have to keep at forever though. Also, learn how to lift and be mindful of everything you do. I very rarely bend at the waist to lift anything these days. I bend at the knees instead.

Oh yeah, and I have also been going to the chiropractor lately, but I still haven't decided if the benefits of that are worth while yet. Although that is more for my neck and headaches.

He's the American Olympic water polo head coach . I was facing fusion of my neck recommended by my orthopedic Dr.
Couple visits to my chiropractor and all was good. Go holistic first then take it from there.
Best of luck to you.
what paddy said.... But the key is a GOOD chiropractor. its my opinion the the good ones are few and far between, but a good one can do wonders for you, and well an average one may make you worse!

Bulging lumbar disc that has compressed the nerve and I have pain and numbness all down the back of my leg.
It's like an electric shock on my ankle/calf and up at the top of my leg and the top of my foot and toes are numb.....good times.

Getting an MRI next week
Bending down to tie your shoe and having your bladder spontaneously unleash a torrent of "raining yellow" all over your badass tight jeans is another of the marvels that a disc bulge/ sciatic nerve injury brings to the table.

I read the first 3 posts, someone mentioned "holistic" care. LOL! smoke a joint, money way better spent than at any acupuncturist/chiropractor/ass-rapist etc.

Get surgery.

smoothies862 speaks the truth about importance of stretching. Hydration is also key since our bodies flex better when we are getting enough fluids and by fluids Red Bull and beer do NOT count as fluids.

Anyone who rides or used to ride and doesn't own an inversion table should correct that ASAP. I got one in 98 and cannot live without mine. I am to the point I am going to get one at my mom's in Ohio even though I am there a couple of weeks a year now. Craigslist for used ones and Sports Authority and Big 5 for retail.

I have had the bulging discs and also sacroiliac joint dysfunction to boot. Been in the hospital 2 days not able to walk with help. Went to PT and it helped a good bit as my core wasn't strong enough in certain areas, but what I feel saved me was Pilates, which was recommended by another PT who is a friend. I was so inflexible and didn't really know how to breathe when lifting or taking impact. I'm way more flexible now and way stronger in the core. If you can get over being in classes with a bunch of moms and usually trained by a woman I swear it will make you better after you learn it.

What's a trip though is it didn't really bother me until the doctor rubbed his knuckle on it checking to see if it hurt.

I had a bulging disc at L4/5 until it herniated. Then I had a laminectomy/discectomy . But the surgery wasn't performed for the back, it was because I developed a "foot drop" as a result of the bulge/herniation. The surgery, in my case, was successful as it corrected the foot drop but it won't fix the pain. Prior to surgery I had almost two years of PT/Chiro care. PT and Chiro did virtually nothing to fix the problem. The best thing is proper hydration, stretching and rest when it hurts. And I had an inversion table and it worked fairly well. RICE! I am now as fully recovered as I will get and I can still ride and do 99% of things I did prior to my injury. The only limitations I have are sitting on a hard surface, kneeling too much (may be a problem for you when you are around Stewy...j/k), or stooping. If I do those it basically stiffens my back up bad and I have to revert to the whole resting thing again. Good luck, the back is a fickle thing and hopefully you will find a solution that works for you.

Sorry brah.

I chiro who had stretched me for a year or two instead of adjusting my back (adjustments not a good idea with a bulging disc) would pull my leg gently and we would hear a gentle click and I would feel better. Can you clear my SI was the code.

Well one day (I later learned he'd come into work stoned) when I asked for my SI to be cleared he gave me the full on low back adjustment BAM which herniated my L5S1 putting me on the couch for two weeks and discomfort for THREE years. If I had any idea how back he jacked me up I would have pursued it legally but that's really not my style....but neither is being in pain for three years.

Don't get me wrong I am a big proponent of chiropractic but just want them to wait until after work to pick up the pipe. I have a great one now in West LA. Dr Michael Sheps 310 473 2911 Has one of two Vax D tables in SoCal and is a true healer.

yoga will do wonders to bring balance to your core and back areas but it takes time there is no such thing as a quick fix.

I had the same issue a few months ago. After a month of nonstop pain, I thought life as I know it was over. I didn't want to see a doctor because frankly I was afraid to know the truth. I took to the internet researching lower back back disc injuries (I could feel it, especially when laying on my back, which was nearly unbearable). I started trying the various exercises I came across, abandoning them if they caused pain. Then I came across 2 simple stretches/exercises that I credit with 100% recovery. I've tried to find the videos again but haven't had any luck, so I'll try to describe. The first one...lay on your back, knees up to 90 degree perpendicular from the torso, arms straight out, palms on the floor, the just move the legs side to side slowly to twist the lower back. Very simple. The next is to stand in front of a wide, knee-high surface, feet fairly far apart (I used a couch). Hold a 5 pound weight in your right hand, palm up. Keep back straight, shoulders back, squat till knees at a 90 degrees, then place the weight onto the bench as far as you can reach to the left without bending the lower back, so you're reaching across the body. Stand back up straight, squat again and pick the weight back up with the right hand, again reaching across the body. Stand back up, switch hands with the weight and repeat in the other direction. 10 or 15 reps in each direction is all it takes, twice or three times a day.

Sounds like bs, I know. But I'm a believer. My back has never felt better.

I have lower back issues/pain like you describe. There's two discs in my lower back that flare up every now and again if I do long hours in the office chair or a double race weekend. Get a methylprednisolone script and you'll be good to go and back to 100% in 24-48 hours. Some guys hate pills, but I personally hate surgeries and other invasive procedures.

I agree, SierraSil Joint Formula 14 works great and is natural too, as far as prescriptions go Diclofenac works well.

I had a bad rupture of l4-5 after overjumping a big table top. One thing to note was that my very pro motocross neurosurgeon said was he often sees injuries like this when people are dehydrated. Your disks elasticity decreases tremendously when dehydrated. The day I did mine was very hot and I. Was not drinking enough for sure.

So i went to a chirocrack and he did what tbey call the million dollar roll to get me "aligned". That night I was in so much pain I laid in bed and cried. No shit. Did 4 rounds of steriod injections that calmed it down but ultimately I think made it worse as it screws with tissue.

I was about to get surgery when a friend recommended i start doing this exercise. It literally got me back into riding after 3 years of pain. I live by it.

I am no doc so take it all for what it is.
