I've been seeing my doctor since the start of 2014 about a pinched nerve. Started feeling pretty good, went in Tuesday and the doctor evaluated the injury again and didn't like how some of the muscles were "twisted" wanted me to get scanned to make sure there is no tumor
Had an MRI on Wednesday I've been a little freaked out, won't know the results until maybe Monday.... Anyone gone threw something similar to ride another day ? Canard comes to mind for inspiration...
Don't spend a moment worrying about any of this and instead spend that time visualizing yourself pain free and doing the things you love to do. Positive thoughts attract positive things.
Best of luck and keep us posted.
A pinched nerve usually heals up. If you've seen a good image of your vertebrae, you know what I mean...it's amazing to me we don't hurt our backs more often. The nerve groups are extensive. And they wind all through your spinal vertebrae through holes in the boney material. And they have a direct effect on the muscle groups in the area(and at times-further away than you'd think).
At 57, I'm reaping the thrashing I've put my back through over the decades. Don't take one physicians word for it all either, you'd be amazed at differing opinions from neurologists. It may take a while to heal up, but give it a break and take it easy....
The Shop
like someone above said stacking pillows to go under your knees/calfs can help by takeing the pressure off the pinched nerve(s)
i got one of these and sleep with it http://www.amazon.com/Mabis-DMI-healthcare-Elevating-Rests/dp/B0007LCB5…

and buy a kidney belt when you get back into riding!
I could be wrong, but being a dumb old farmer with a bad back who knows other farmers with bad backs...your story sounds familiar.
What caused your back problems? A certain crash or just repeated abuse of riding dirtbikes?

Since then it has been a living hell and I pretty much drank myself to almost death to mask the pain so I could pass out at night and actually sleep. I quit drinking and then the pain came on way worse so I have been going to pain management for the last 2 years. It helped at first but now I have a major tolerance for pain meds and they no longer work no matter how much I take. I'm actually going on Friday to discuss a new plan for my pain and not sure what I'm going to do. But when I broke my back, I got it on video.
This was the worse day of my life as far as pain goes and I couldn't breathe in so much pain! Doesn't even look bad but I spent a week in the hospital in the worst pain I've ever felt! If I wasn't leaning back so far, it might not of happened. I was preparing to wheelie through mud when I landed and that's why I was so far back and the seat broke my back!
I think you will feel better given time. How much better is hard to say. The worst for me was the first 4 months after the disectomy, then it leveled off a bit. Steriods is the only thing that helped me, but It didn't last long at all. My legs never feel normal anymore. Fuck everyone man, try and suck It up the best you know how and wait It out. Trust me, I know thats easier said than done, I'm still waiting.
PS... I wish I would have been given the disc replacement option at the time. Whats done is done though.
And thanks for all the nice post. Believe me, nobody wants sympathy, but Its nice to know someone understands every now and then.
Im doing a little better now, mostly due to rest and time and an amazing physical therapist. spinehealth.com is a great site for info they also have a forum with nice ppl.
search for a physical therapist that specializes in spine/pain managment, some PT's are lifesavers but its hard to find a good one sometimes, ive had a few that just made me worse. just take it one day at a time and try to stay positive even when it seems impossible. best of luck to all
I was told to have my L5 removed and I said no way over ten years ago. Spent the next three years in discomfort and started back riding two years after that. Inversion table and Vax D traction table have kept the surgeron's scalpel away from me.
EDIT Does MX really need big doubles and triples? Don't shoot me just asking.
One time I broke both wrists and my ankle and didn't even crash in Bull Run, Maine! Over shot a jump in the lead while about to get passed and landed in the flat. My left wrist looked like a set of stairs! lol These are just the injuries I can remember and there was way more!
Oh ya! I broke my thumb almost off (with surgery) when I whipped it too far and couldn't bring it back, off a ramp! I actually saw the footage recently in a video called "Refusing to Grow Up" by Craig Durkee in Arizona.
Check out this video clip of when my roommates bike coughed off the ramp and I came up way short! Don't ever ride without a cross bar pad and pro taper bars! lol
But watching some old 2 stroke footage of me back in the day always makes me feel a little better! lol
This was when I was pretty fearless before the back injuries! The wrists and collarbones never bothered me, but the back just puts the fear in you that ends all of it. At one point I was doing the IFMA and regular Demo FMX shows and pretty decent. All that came to a end with one wheel spin while seat bouncing 75' and compressed my spine!
If you have ever seen the first Nitro Circus videos or Global Addiction by Gregg Godfrey, I'm in those and some of the same clips are in my riding demo below from years ago. Those were the days!
