I dont remember a recent thread on this, but I am just absolutely appauled by the magazine that comes with Membership to the AMA. It shows nothing, but street bike stuff which I know composes much of the market, but still I wish they would do something to spice it up.
Every month when it comes in the mail, I either look on the cover to see Jay Leno's head, race bike specs, or some gigantic street whale bike tour through some nowhere town. Motocross is very exciting and if they took the time I am sure many of the older members of the AMA who used to ride Moto would appreciate some more moto in there.

AMA. Protecting your right to ride. (3 local tracks closed this year and the AMA did nothing about it).
Yeah it sucks. Get next to it. The "magazine" is the least of thier problems.
Hate to keep harping on this point but after wanting lower sound forever it strikes me as odd that SX drove the AMA to do something about lowering sound levels and not losing riding areas and tracks for eight freaking years!
they have a few ads in there ya know......
I would suspect that they don't lose a lot of membership fees producing it.
Pit Row
YEAH, because they won't let you race if you're not.
The point is where was the AMA on this one? I would like one person on here to please tell me one thing that the AMA does to benefit local or pro. MX or its riders today!
Once on their survey card I wrote "more motocross in the magazine" under suggestions and they sent me a very terse letter to the effect of motocrossers make up a tiny portion of the AMA membership. Basically, they went out of their way to inform me they don't give a shit about motocross- and yeah, it ticked me off since I have been a member off and on since 1986.
So I went back to the joy of poring over the lifetime member lists they publish.
One such proposal was introduced in Harford County, Maryland approximately a year ago.
However-- it was fought pretty hard, and by all indications was shot down. I am under the impression (and hoping) that it is now a totally dead proposal now.
Besides the riding public being understandably outraged-- the Harford County farming community also got involved. Under this proposal, they would also have been included as they would have been banned from using ATV's and utility vehicles (Mules, Rhinos, etc) on at least certain portions of their own farms in Harford County...
The Harford County farming community-- although dwindling in numbers as a result of development over the years, got pretty peeved to learn that a 'tool of their trade' (ATV's/utility carts, etc) could be considered a "recreational vehicle" that would have also been included under the ban. (not to mention that local hunters, that favor ATVs for heading out into the woods also joined the fight).
Another thing that stirred the hornet's nest was the question of exactly how this proposal was going to be inforced.
The concept that a neighbor that wasn't ever thrilled with you having a bike/ATV/etc could now almost stand out and wait for you with a tape measure next to their property was another source of contention.
The combination of local riders, farmers, hunters, etc mounted a pretty stiff oposition that will hopefully stay that way!
The AMA did send me a "legal alert" letter advising me about the proposal (and that I should join the fight).
I can't really attest first-hand what involvement the AMA did/did not have on this proposal being defeated-- (or if they even did anything more than just sending me a letter!).
I would have to say that as far as the AMA being "proactive" or "leading the fight"--- that it never happened (I got my legal letter a couple months after this proposal was introduced!).
I'd have to give the most if not all of the credit to the local motorcycle&ATV riders who were loud and very vocal about defeating this--- and to them networking via the internet, craigslist, etc to getting the word out quickly and clearly. I am aware who most of these people were/are, and I do know that their vocal efforts were the key factor in defeating this.
Score one for the local community getting involved! ...and hopefully the last time Harford County has to deal with that issue!
