10 years from now, electric advances will far outweigh engine technology, it will be substantially cheaper (than currently), and more readily available.

Nope, or clutch, gas tank, coolant, pipe.

That E-MX race with KTM was so bad ass! I don't know why some of you are complaining, you could buy a conventional dirt bike AND and electric bike!

As far as cost, aren't batteries for these bikes close to the $10,000 ballpark???

Here is the public skate park in my area and under it is the public biking area over in Seattle. I don't see why it would be any different for public electric MX. Maybe you just don't live in a very cool area.

In ten years time we will be talking about how good the racing was back in the day in the early 2000s lol.

Then ten years after that we will be talking about how good the racing was back in 2014 compared to the now cookie cutter tracks and pull one race from 2014 to prove our point Smile

I think in 10 to 15 years the sport is going to move into using electric bikes and grow exponentially because of it.
Grow exponentially how? Undoubtedly there will be niche areas the electric bikes fit into but I don't see this being a solution for the masses for another generation...or two. Battery technology hasn't changed significantly in the last 110 years and I don't expect any breakthroughs soon.

Also the people who can't afford to ride their inexpensive two strokes that are currently collecting dust in their garages sure as heck aren't candidates for getting off the couch to re enter the fray on an electric bike considering cost of entry.

How? by allowing people to ride in populated areas. How is that not going to grow the sport? In most areas there is nowhere to ride. That is the biggest issue facing motocross and dirtbikes in general. We are talking ten to fifteen years from now so then the technology will be readily available to make good bikes that would be a fraction of the cost to buy and maintain than a modern four stroke.

You realize there are electric cars now, right? There has been all kinds of advances with significantly more on the verge of happening. Lithium ion batteries are a huge development and now researchers have developed batteries with carbon nanotube electrodes and as well as lithium air batteries. Electric cars are driving the technology at a very rapid pace. High powered, long lasting, stable batteries to power cars amongst other things will be common place much sooner rather than later. Weird, I don't get the Naysaying here.

Good question Lenny.

I think it's gonna be like Polo, or F1, a sport for the rich. With some crazy ass stuff that will blow your mind.

Sure, it will be around, but only for a few with a ton of talent, or mega bucks from daddies business.
It seems to make money for the likes of Feld, so they are gonna need riders.
But like Nascar or Monster trucks, the average Joe, it will be out of reach for them.

The electric factor, may work for SX or MX, but like the naysayers above, I just don't see a battery
holding enough charge to take on anything like an Enduro or CrossCountry.

Like solar, sure it's better than 20 years ago, but not that much better.
Like a rechargeable drill, and believe me, I'm around that stuff all the time, they just can't hang with the electric tools
that plug in the wall. I call them toy tools, because that's how they work in the real world. Like a toy.

Add the fact a battery drill is what, 3 times the cost of a 110 volt drill, who's gonna pay for that?
Anyone here own a hybred car? Price one of them.

Then, the issue of 200 guys needing to recharge between motos, who knows how big a line would be needed
to feed that many chargers. Who's gonna put that kind of money into a facility?

Ultra sexy, top tech gasoline fed bikes, ridden by a few for the masses to watch on cable TV, that's the future imho.

If we go Electric I think Urbancross will be the sport of the future.Think along the lines of Red Bull MTB events in Brazil I think.

I respect your perspective but respectfully disagree. Economic factors (more so than lack of riding areas in populated areas) are keeping more people from riding in 2014. I thought I had heard they were selling electric cars but wasn't sure so thanks for shedding light on this subject. Seriously electric cars are cool but i'll take a diesel over an electric any day of the week.

I think electric cars make a lot of sense for fleet vehicles but am not sold on the whole Prius deal either for this reason.

Pretty funny 20 guys on a starting gate all yelling out Brap brap brap braaaappppp as the gates drops. Reminds me of a Monty Python sketch where they used coconuts to make it sound like they were riding horses.

Nothing stops....first we get rid of premix smell, then noise....thats all. snif snif...

All electric mx, could open the door for more convenient location options.
No noise = no noise complaints.
Dust will be the issue, then it will be the water consumption and dust control chemicals that they bitch about next. There's always something to bitch about from the liberal greenies.

If the bikes are good, I don't particularly care. The worst part will be if they "outlaw" gasoline bikes, leaving all of us out of a bike having to buy a brand new electric bike.

Also, the way I see it, if the bikes are being re-invented there's no reason the racing itself won't be changed drastically also. Sure, the ideal goal is to have these electric bikes replicate what we have now, but maybe that's just not feasible at any kind of realistic cost. So in that case I'd image racing would turn into a kind of BMX/SX hybrid. Lighter bikes with different power curves riding on more BMX-y style tracks.

I dunno, the future, man, the future!

Or the wastefulness of electric-producing resources that are used up on these shenanigans.

I remember a few years ago a lady wrote in to the newspaper I worked for saying that all the families that drive their kids to sporting events on the weekend are contributing to global warming and rising gas prices. Fuck you bitch.

Electric cars haven't exactly taken over the automotive industry. I don't see electric bikes taking over MX in the foreseeable future. Sure, i bet we start seeing them here and there. But I think there are just too many barriers to entry to be mainstream - just like the auto market. There will be new technologies that come out too, such as hydrogen to compete. It's a lot easier and faster to refill a hydrogen tank than to recharge a battery.

For sure, unless gas prices become unaffordable. Not saying that will happen anytime soon, but there's a lot of doomsdayers that say it will. If it does, and it becomes something only the rich can get, we'll have to get something else.

no one will buy electirc mx bikes..that company n san fran thats all electric liberal is focusing on scooters and whatnot cause all the poofters (dudes who kiss other dudes) in the bay area are wantin' to be all green and shit.

the typical mx racer isnt concerned about the enviroment.
