They tried a split start for the main. First and second from the heats were going to be put on the side of the gate that fell after the other side. to tighten up the racing.

So in the heats, you had guys literally pulling over, faking injuries, stalling bikes, etc to get on the first gates to fall... Ricky pretty much explains it.

It was an idea to make more exciting racing that was an epic fail.

I forgot how whiney he sounded on the podium. Great guy and great racer but man I have hard time listening to him.
I wonder if he got some sand in his leathers?

Was it a split start on one gate? I seem to recall it was a 2 row start where the heat winners started from the back gate and the lower finishers from the front gate. 1985 was along time ago.

If I recall, most of the riders were faking injury's and crashes to get on the front row. First and 2nd rider would pass then a miraculous recovery!. It was a bust

Ward hid at the top of the peristyle, LOL. I was there, and remember my dad explaining what was going on because I was totally confused, Lachien was my favorite rider going into the race. RJ and Bailey were the only two big names that did not sandbag, along with a couple euros. It was the World Supercross, I don't think it has been tried since.

I can;t remember if it was two rows, or if one half of the gate fell and then either other fell a short time later.

Yeah, it was a two row start with the winners in the second row. RJ mentions it in that interview. I don't know who came up with the idea, but it was obviously an epic fail!

They could probably do this at the MEC and make it work. Line them all up for the first moto then use 2 rows inverted for the second moto and/or third moto. No one would sand bag in that race.

They do something like this in Arenacross. But it is random who gets inverted. It's a unique format for sure, but I think it works for arenacross.

I like the idea of giving the best finish the worst gate, but the only way it could work in supercross is to give points for heat races

motocross would be fairly simple

Remember the old Mickey Thompson Series?

They used to have the fastest qualifier (from single day qualifying) start in the back of the field with a bright colored streamer off the back of their helmets. This helped distinguish them from the rest of the field.

They would get passing points as they came throughout the field

maybe get olympic scoring and give points in the heats and main, the person with the highest amount off points at that moment goes to the gate first and the person with the smallest amount last pretty simple if you ask me.

should be an all out sprint every time the gate drops

This was before the '86 season, before Matiasevichs time. A sandbagger won, no one cared, I think I want to say O'Mera, but I could be wrong, I remember he was on the T-shirt I got.

No. They talked about this on the steve matthes show with Chicken (I think) where he was killing chickens as a kid (or something along those lines) and they just started calling him chicken. The interview with him was very good.

It was the first World Supercross trophy series in 1984, sanctioned by the FIM, named in memory of a past high up official of the FIM.
I was at the FIM congress in Munich the year before lobbying FIM officials on behalf of Mike Goodwin's SMC Motorsports to run 2 of the initial rounds, this one at LA Coliseum and also at Wembley Stadium London England. Wembley race had to be cancelled as British ACU (AMA equivalent) wanted a massive sanctioning permit fee.
