If you did I'm sure you recall the whoops and them being made from lightpoles,2 on bottom, one on top, covered with dirt.

It wore off pretty quick and we were hitting bare logs ala endurox. Only time I had creosote on my frame rails.

The start fed straight into them with no 1st turn and the gate was 40 back then.

There were 2 sections of them and I recall a flagman waving yellow before the set after you charged the start area in 4th
like that made it safer or we would slow down, lol.

I raced it. Those logs were no problem. I remember passing Wardy through the whoops and gave him a little slap on the helmet to let him know who's boss before I whipped it in his face over the finish line.
Good times.

I was standing next to the track at 13 years old watching from pit row. It was rough as can be.

I was there as a spectator. Ah, the days when Daytona wasn't just another cookie cutter supercross track...

Those telephone poles were used for years. I raced Daytona in 82 & 83 and back then the track had very little clay added to the tri-oval area to make obstacles. Gary Bailey used sand to make the jumps and whoops. If the poles hadn't been there, the whoops would have been flat after practice. Today's Daytona is not nearly as rough as it was back then. But I think that can be said about almost any track used for the pros today.

85 Race is awesome, also great to see riders who crash off track, stop, turn around and re enter the track where they left it and losing positions in the process.

I remember the dirt would wear off over the telephone poles and it would leave giant kickers in some areas.

No, but in '85 I probably raced back to class after a 40 and a bong rip at lunch time!

You are so correct,I watch every race and can't believe the backy patch these guys get to ride in.

When I farmed back in the 80,s I would get my bike our and pin it in the fresh tilled field, making 5th gear berms aching for
a 18 tooth front. That is what I see outdoors today.

Kids today would go home if faced with dust so thick your bike would go so rich from filter blockage that you would run out of fuel from dust. Ask Larry Brooks about leading at Anderson SC on the rc125 only to run out on the lastish lap.

But,it was what it was, I was looking thru photos today with my daughter to show her some pics of my best friend that was
murdered 12/21/86 and we ran across pics of the lightpoles.

I dont have a lot of pics, a loner I was,the few that went along know the insanity I brought, some hung tough others burned out quick but I am proud of what we did, mostly for nothing but the thrill.
