Raced in the early to mid 80's, my parents took me every weekend and usually 2 nights a week.
Here I am in my mini mongoose

This is on my my JMC mini that my father and I built from scratch, we even laced the wheels.

already got my 2.5 year old hooked up to start riding and racing. Got him a tiny little Haro and a Red line micro mini

funny story! had that same redline mini for my son at 7 years old. He raced it 3 times and went 2,3,1 and didn't want to race anymore as he said he won all there was to win, had all 3 trophies. Ha!

for any of you that freestyle and consider buying bikes or parts consider these brands if you can

volume bikes/demolition parts
odyssey/sunday bmx
s one helmets
etnies shoes

and all can be bought at danscomp.com

these are all the people that allow my son to travel the world and enjoy the life of a pro bmxer. (sorry for the SPAM but it's where his pay comes from)

thanks

oh! that Auburn pictured is SICK but my dream bikes was the pink Hutch Hollywood. Wish I could get my hands on my old Race Inc.

and i did race indoors as well at the USBA Crawdaddy Nationals in Baton Rouge. Won the 16 Novice Class. Felt like supercross to me. Was stoked! 6' trophy handed out at the finish line.

Here is a picture of me at the silver dollar national in Reno, CA in 2007. I thought I was so cool to be racing indoors! Especially since it was snowing outside.Cool I remember those kids were pretty crazy though, I got taken out my first lap of practice!

And I know the bike says 696 rather than 485, because it was an ABA not an NBL race. I still trip out on my hands, I guess arm pump wasn't an issue for me back then!

Raced BMX from 75-78. My great nephew has been doing a few races / clinics. Funny, I picked up a couple of Redline Proline mini's off of CL, paid for $185 for both of them. Then built him an Intense mini for his last birthday. He ends up on the low dollar Redlines more often than not. Says it's faster. Should have saved my money.

Wow, It's pretty cool how many guys have crossed over from BMX, and the few guys that do both.

This thread has all sorts of win. For all I know they still do, but anybody remember racing any nationals in indoor stadiums? Hair spray and Coke on the tires? I think the furthest I traveled was Minneapolis to race in the "Rondo Cup" (Rondo was a failed drink company). I for whatever reason did great on the wood jumps and slick floors.
i remember going to the lumberjack nationals and a few others. for some reason racing at oakwood on wed nights stands out to me too. its amazing watching those guys race that supercross bmx overseas. they are totally insane. those are like almost mx style size jumps

Ah! You are speaking my language. Lumberjack Nationals, Gary Ellis and family put those on. If you ever do get to River Valley, you will show up and feel like time stopped, everything is identical including the people and kids. I wasn't a fan of Oakwood Arena down in Compton.. I mean Lakewood. LOL. Though I raced for BBR and we had ties to the track. Remember the downhill SeaTac track? It isn't a downhill anymore, but is still there, built into a public park so it will always be there (as well as a new RC track). You probably raced at the arena in Monroe, lots of good memories.

I wish my son had more interest in BMX, a sport for kids can't get more wholesome than BMX.

I grew up in AZ and raced at Chandler and Black Mountain. I raced from 1983-1995. The last 3 years were nationals only and some local in SoCal.

I remember Chandler BMX. I always wanted to go out there but we never did.

As a kid growing up in the area you live now. We used to ride our bikes all the way from Quail Valley (Yes that's where I lived. It was definitely better to live there back in the 80's & 90's) down Railroad Canyon Rd. Then we would go up to the top of Tuscany Hills and haul ass down to the bottom as fast as we could. Then we would ride all the way around the lake and head back home. All while stopping along the way to hit different jumps and things we could find here and there.

I don't know how we managed to do all that in one day. That would kill me to do that now.

Here's something kinda cool. Probably the best 4th place trophy you could ever hope for.

It's changed a bit the last couple years. For the last couple years the standard has been the random gate.

"Ok riders random start, Riders ready, Watch the gate". After the word gate it can take from 1 up to 4 seconds for the gate to drop.

They changed it to conform to the UCI rules all geared towards the Olympics and UCI World Championships.

Chandler BMX is the Original BMX track , it's only a few miles from my House and it's a great place, Rinny and his family have done a great job with it.

I think they also changed it to stop the "slingshotting". Some guys had it timed so well they literally pulled a JLaw and jumped the gate.

My brother raced a bunch of NBL races in the '80s and early '90s. Won the NBL #1 Cruiser plate nationally once, too.
I have great memories of going to a few of the races with him and my father (I was always more into motorcycles but ride road and mountain bikes a lot now).
His son and mine just started racing locally this past year and will continue in 2014 - my son wants a new Redline and Santa might just bring him one.

Your Santa sounds like a pretty nice guy. After racing my old dirt jumping bike, my wife ordered me a Haro Pro for my birthday; the difference was uncanny.

Let it be known that this is not how I ride my road bike, mountain bike, or bmx bike.

Stoked that this thread is still going strong. Maybe we should have a BMX get together before or after one of the SX's

That was cool Eddie. I wish I would have had a go pro when I was racing, probably would have had a lot of crazy videos. My mom still has all of my old races on tape from the state qualifiers and nationals. After seeing that I might have to pull they out and watch them again, good times!
