How do you guys handle the loss of a pet you've had for a long time?

I got Bugera when I was in 3rd grade, which was one of my best years of school I've ever had. My dad picked me up after school in his red '84 Nissan pickup (still mad at him for selling that before I turned 16, that thing was titties) and in the front seat was a cardboard box. I peaked inside and there was a little black cat face looking up at me. She meowed, of course because she's the most vocal cat on planet earth, and I took her home and got her fed. Her first name was Chevy because I was 8 and couldn't think of a name and basically just named her the first thing I saw. But about a week later we settled on Bugera. She was a fierce hunter, got really fat and loud and obnoxious, always used to sleep on my bed at night or my dad's bed, even followed us around the block on our bikes sometimes. Then she lost a ton of weight, her hearing, some of her fur, started to get little tumors and bumps all over, and would wake the whole house up at 2am wanting to eat. Her loud meow turned into a loud scream, basically. So today my dad had her sent to the farm :/ I don't blame him or anything, just sad.

I feel like such a little girl being all distraught, but she was my cat for so long. Just another reason to neglect my last homework of the term, I guess. Cheers to Bugera.

I don't care if ya'll think I'm a puss, I just needed to vent I guess lol Unsure

Oh man, sorry for your loss. Not a puss at all! I love our dog and cats, they are family members for sure!

It sucks so bad and the only real cure for the heart is passing of time....

Thanks jonjon, you're exactly right, they are family. They take on these personalities and just become another part of the family. My girlfriend and I live in a townhouse where we have to pay a deposit on pets, so instead we just head over to my parent's house every weekend (it's like a petting zoo there) and hang out with the animals. We never even think to invite them here because we don't have furry little friends.

Sorry to hear about Bugera, sounds like a great cat.

You're not a puss. Having to put a pet down is one the harder things to do in life, especially as you get older.
Non-cat owners really don't know how cool they can be. The three I have really helped me get thru my dogless time that is now over.

The Apple-cart has been turned over here at my house as Smoky won't come upstairs.

Maybe rescue a kitten?

It's kind of crazy that you say that, because my dad has been talking about putting her down for a while. He knows she's been suffering, but he's also been tired of her waking everyone up at odd hours whenever she's hungry. It's hard to describe how audible her scream/meow got in her last year or so. It was SO loud.

He did not put her down because she annoyed him, but he did put her down because she was obviously not healthy. She was very, very deaf, she would pass out in weird ways and we were never sure if she was taking her last breaths. She lost a ton of weight. It was pretty bad. So he finally took her in, and it's actually hit him the hardest. I guess he's been holed up in his room most of the evening. Poor guy...

Thanks for the reassurance tho, dudes. It's a shame our pets live barely a quarter as long as humans. We grow so attached to them. Sounds like everyone here treats their animals very well tho, and that's good.

Lot of good pet owners here. Like G-man said, putting a pet down is very hard. You have this animal that trusts you completely, and you have to be the one that ends their life. No shame in feeling the pain.

Very sorry to hear that. I'm a dedicated cat owner (human servant) myself. They're incredibly intelligent and the attachment is that of a family member (I know many dog owners feel the same about their dogs too). I was a complete blubbering mess when one of my three got run over in 2011, so don't feel bad about being distraught. Just proves you're a great owner.

Mate, we had a budgie named Citrus... The day he went, I cried. Just shows you're a good dude and care about your little mates.
I'm not a cat person but would never want to see ANY animal suffer. If my dog hurts himself I become like a worried parent and wish I could take his pain... Shit, I'll even turn the shower off If I see a bug in distress and try to save it.

Sorry for your loss man.

Sorry to hear. Don't feel bad about being hurt. I cried like a baby when they put my dog down. Thinking about it even now (that was over a year ago), tears still well up. Hurt so much, I find it tough to think of having another pet ever again. Probably will....just that it hurt terribly.

If you liked the cat that much, I'm sure it could tell and you gave it a happy life. Be happy you did that.

Hold your head up high. NOTHING to be ashamed about here.

I never was a cat-person, but my parents-in-law had to relocate across country, and could not take their cat, so I offered. That was about 8 years ago, and he slowly became my best buddy. He was a ferocious hunter; kicked ass on any other cat who stepped on the property; and when he met me at the property line when I came home from work, from that point to bedtime, he was usually not more than a couple of steps away.

If a cat has 9 lives, we saw no less than three get snuffed, but he always battled back.

About 3 months ago, he started getting some lumps in weird places. I took him in, and he was diagnosed with the Feline Lymphoma. Vet gave him 30 days to live. He lasted about 45 until we put him down, and that was one of the most difficult tasks that I have had to endure. Brought him home, and buried him on the property.

I miss him every day, but take solace knowing that he is not far away.... (This picture was taken the day we put him down. I was pretty much bawling my eyes out.)

sorry for your loss Justin. losing a pet is hard, especially when you have to make the decision...

i had to make a similar decision with my dog a few years ago. he had a seizure induced stroke and i knew he would never recover. i had the little guy for the better part of 15 years. when i took him to the clinic, he was out of it. didn't know his name, couldn't walk, wouldn't respond to sound sight anything. i insisted on having him lay in my lap when they gave him the shot, just before the doctor inserted the needle, Bruno turned to my face and gave me a single lick on the face to tell me goodbye. broke my heart. only thing that made it harder was after i finished burying him at home, i was sitting on my couch when i received a phone call at 2am that my best friend had taken his own life. tough time for me, but i made it through it.

sorry to turn this to me, i feel your pain on a lost pet, a lost loved one is more like it. keep your head up bro

I'm very sorry for your loss. Cheers to Bugera.

I had our cat of 18 years put down last month. I was a mess. The hardest thing I have ever done, & I'm a 51 year old man.

Bummer- sorry for your loss. You might feel like your acting a chick when stuff like this happens, but if it's any comfort, know that there are lots of muddy he-men who feel the same when a beloved pet parts company.

I had a siamese that badgered the crap out of me, insisted on sitting on my lap or on my desk when I was trying to work, meowed like a howler monkey when I was on the phone, and slept on my head at night, purring like a freight train. When he went into kidney failure, I was with him when he was put down. It was terrible, and I was such a mess I got a speeding ticket on the way home.

Sucks, but this too shall pass. Don't feel bad for having loved her so much. It's cool.

I am with everyone else. I have 2 black cats Betty and Rodknee if something were to happen to one of them or when I have to put them down it will crush me. It's amazing the attachment you can get to pets even as an adult. Sorry for you loss.

Yep there is a lot of truth in this thread.

I couldn't go to work the next day after I put Mojo (dog) down. Like others a complete mess, good to know I'm in good company.

Newman,
I had a cat named "Johnny O"....
Our first cats when I was 5 were Siamese and named Honda & Yamaha.
Suzy had a few litters.

Then there was Magoo, Chief, and currently Elsie, Seca & Smoky.

Thanks Crash! Smile

Cats are very good at hiding pain and discomfort. It sounds like putting your little guy down was the right decision.

I had to put my own cat Casey down last year just before Christmas. It's never easy man. That little bugger was my buddy for sure and it hit me hard after I came home from the vet. I still miss the little bugger and probably always will.

Pets really do become part of your family. Losing them is never easy, but try and feel better that he's not suffering anymore. His last few months were probably really painful. Casey exhibited many of the same traits when he was on his last legs. He just couldn't hide the pain anymore. It was time to end the suffering.

Sorry to hear about your cat. I honestly like my dog and 2 cats better than most people I know. I'd really rather hangout with my dog waaaaay more than most people. He's only 5 now but he's a Boxer and they don't have a very long lifespan and I'm already starting to dread that day when I have to make the decision. I take him everywhere with me and it will suck when the day comes where I don't have him anymore.

Thanks all, I appreciate the reassuring stories. She definitely wasn't her self in her older days (she was about 15, I think) so I guess that makes it easier and harder at the same time. Harder because it makes you feel bad the way their health declined, but then easier because you just have to accept that that's the way it works.

For real tho, thanks dudes.

One of the toughest days of our life is losing our beloved companions. I say this a lot but they should outlive us with all the unconditional love they give. Our dogs and cats sleep in a big pile on my head every night and I wouldn't have it any other way. Animals rule and you guys do too.
