There is no way to tell which series is faster.

You can't tell from one race a year. Sure its a great race and provides a chance to see riders race each other, but you can't tell me that is a way to see which complete series is faster. It's a one off novelty race. That truly is a Worlds' best at the time VS our three best available at the time. Even then, there are European teams filled with our series' riders.

Which series is better?

Well, that depends on what you consider better? Money? Is that it? Lets look at history....

How many riders have left contracts here to go race the GP's? I can't remember the last time a US series rider (American or not) had a ride that was top notch and decided to leave. America seems to be the place everyone wants to be unless your name is Cairoli or Herlings. Honestly, the Gp's are usually a "go there is I can't get anything here" option. There has to be a reason for this.... Right?

Don't be a dumb European and just look at the facts. The clear majority of riders seemingly want to be in the American series. WHY?

(just be be clear, I do not think Europeans are dumb. This statement is a direct response to Geoff's "dumb american" comment)
Majority? Since 2000 from memory its been Langston, Reed, McFarlane, Rattray, Searle, Pourcel, Musquin, Roczen and now Ferris (sorry if I missed somebody). Five MX2 World...
Majority? Since 2000 from memory its been Langston, Reed, McFarlane, Rattray, Searle, Pourcel, Musquin, Roczen and now Ferris (sorry if I missed somebody). Five MX2 World Champions, not a single MX1 World Champion (Reed was 2nd, Searle 3rd, and Ferris 6th in their respective classes).

So in 13 years eight riders, and you said majority?

From that list two are South African, three Australia and two Frenchman, plus a German

Believe me, some might like to give it a try, but not that many really want to live and race in America. Otherwise they would have.

Look, discussing this with you is a no win situation. We know where your loyalty is. I commend you for that.
And thats the beauty of bench racing, be it for NFL, Motocross, Football or whatever. Everyone has their own team, and in the end, somebody is right in there. Or maybe both are.

Yep, the euros suck, I have no idea who they have won all the motos and team overall at the last two MXoN......Must be luck?
exactly. glad you finally understand.

Geoff, if a guy waits too long to learn supercross, he will never learn it, and that makes the jump to America even riskier. Ask Shayne King, or Greg Albertyn, or Alessio Chioidi, or Tyla Rattray…

DeCoster and Robert and Hallman and Mikkola and Harry Everts and more raced here often in the Trans-AMA and Inter-Am Series -- before supercross.

We in America have great respect for the GP riders, unlike how you seem to feel about our riders and our series, based on the MXoN results the last two years, when America has finished third and second.

One last thing: I noticed you didn't write up the news of Dean Ferris' departure until today, three or four days after all of the other sites, and only then you do it as news from the team owner's point of few, not the athlete who actually made the news by moving… You're mad, and that's understandable. But please quit turning everything into our series versus your patron's series.

If you want to stick to the European side of things in everything you post, maybe you should stick to European forums?

DC,

I had made a deal with Steve Dixon not to mention it, and also Dean also didn't want to mention it until Yamaha gave the ok. I have had contact with both parties and Dean has promised to do something with me as soon as he can.

I am pumped for him. Riding for the Red Bull KTM Factory team in America is huge. Angry, never for a rider when he gets to do what he loves.

Problem with you and a lot of other people on here, you read stuff into what I write, but I never put down the AMA series or its riders.

But for some reasons because I say I think our riders are as good, that is considered an insult to people here and the AMA series.

Euros are faster at the moment in Europe and I am sure the American riders are faster in America. Correct or not correct?

I knew this already back in 2012 when Ferris won a Finnish outdoor "supercross" race in Hyvinkää. After all, what more there is to win in Europe after such a prestigious achievement Wink http://youtu.be/khk8gaza50s?t=4m6s

We read stuff into what you write because that's all that you write. The problem I have is that you're my friend and I try to steer you away from saying stupid shit, because everyone sees right through it.

Yes, Euros are faster in Europe, and Americans (and sometimes Australians and South Africans and French and Germans) are faster in America.

And I didn't realize you made a deal with Steve Dixon not to mention it, but now that you have, I wish you had not.

I am a GP reporter, not AMA. Sorry, but I don't follow Amateur championships. Don't follow European Championships either.

Doesn't interest me in the slightest. I want to see the big boys race!!! If that makes me an idiot, then I am an idiot.

DC,

I made the deal to not mention it and I didn't until he gave me the ok. As you know when a rider changes teams under contract there can be problems. I have worked long enough in the sport to know to take care of those who I respect. When it was leaked there was a danger that the deal wouldn't happen.

Motocross is a small sport and I try and do my best to be positive about the Grand Prix series, because its a great series, with great riders, and I have never been one for politics.

For the record the AMA series is great, the riders are great and its the series I most watched as a kid, my first MX hero was Marty Smith and my nicest moment as a media guy was when Chad stopped on the victory lap of his first ever SX 250 main win to celebrate together.

I haven't written anything stupid here, but it seem like if I mention something that might give the GP riders a little credit, its considered putting shit on the AMA series and riders. Go back and read some of the shit people write about the GP series. Its laughable.

But lets stop this, I am off to bed. Its getting late here in Europe.

I know the top 15 or so 450 riders and probably the top five 250 riders. And I never said the 250cc class in Euro was the equal of the 250cc class in America, because I don't think it is. MX1 versus 450s is another story. I think both are stacked.

Hello David,

This was really a situation that took a bit of time to sort out correctly , there were initial talks between Dean and Pit, Roger and also Laurens from Yamaha plus my sponsors. We are all lovers of the sport and at the end of the day after the Nations it was clear Dean had some more stock value and a renewed interest in the 250 class, he was always going to go to the USA, all the Aussie's end up there, it is more suited to their lifestyle I think. I did not need to let Dean go I had a legal agreement with him, but we both made sacrifices to each other to make this happen. I don't want to spend my 25th year in GP's in bad spirit, There doesn't need to be a bad side to this story its about us all going about enjoying the job we do.
For once everyone used common sense and talked and got the best outcome possible in the situation, even the good weather in the US came into play, I mean Dean was staying 6 months in Australia to take advantage of the better climate Yes it could have turned nasty if it was one sided but I honestly believe we both came away happy and motivated for 2014. I look forward to coming over there for the Monster cup and some SX with Max 2015! and I will see you at A1 where I will cheer both Dean's (Wilson and Ferris) plus Zach

Good luck this upcoming season! As a Swede and a Scandinavian it's always great to see a well known team invest in our riders. Your team have already a very good reputation around here and this statement makes it even greater.

Which series is faster? Mate, you missed the last two MXoN results? I think euros are fastest in Europe and AMA guys faster in America. As for which series is better, that all depends on which one you prefer. For sure the GP guys are equal to the AMA guys. To think otherwise is just stupid. Money talks and for guys from Australia, France, or South Africa USA seems to be the place to want to go. Supercross looks huge, but for Euros it means very little. Don't just be a dumb American and try and think outside the box.

Mate, you are talking about Americans leaving America. It ain't going to happen. It is like how many Italians, Dutch, Spanish, Belgian riders have you had racing full time in America in the last 30 years. How about zero. When did you last have a premier class rider move from GP to AMA. How about Tortelli in 1999 or maybe (if you want to count him) Reed in 2001, although Reed being an Aussie was always just passing through. The greatest GP riders of all time Everts, Cairoli, De Coster, Robert, Geboers, Jobe, Thorpe, Malherbe, Mikkola, H.Everts, Rahier, and so on, NEVER races in America.

And of course some young kids want to race there, its an awesome place, with great SX and MX series. But you might also wonder why there are no leading American racers doing F1 or MotoGP at the moment. Americans don't travel well, they would rather do Nascar or Indycar, or something like that. You can never compare a euro to an America in terms of travelling. Americans think their country is the only place to be. And that is okay, its an awesome country.

There's no doubt that the Euro riders have caught up to us IN MX. They have copied the US riders riding style and technique and training and now they are competitive with us. The biggest difference is the length of the races and the sand tracks.

Their races are more of a marathon than a sprint unlike here in the US. Euro riders have issues with our heat and our riders have issues with the deep sand over there. They both take some getting used to no doubt.

Steve Dixon also brings up a good point regarding the similar culture and good weather as reasons SOME riders from the GP's flourish.

I think the two main reasons some Champions from Europe don't come over, are the fact that the riders know they have a sure thing over there to make history and maybe they are afraid that they couldn't adapt to the culture and knowing they can't pick up SX this late in the game.

Our riders have no incentive to go there, due to lack of money and media exposure in the series. Let's face it, it's a short window in professional racing, why would they want to waste opportunity here where the money is. True or not, the AMA series is still perceived as the best in the world.

If Stewart sets the fastest lap of a race but finishes 3rd, nobody says he's better than Villopoto. But if Tomac or Josh Hill set the fastest lap of a race, they are clearly better than everyone else.

these threads are so ridiculous

one thing I have noticed in them though, The GP guys are saying the series are equal, the US guys are saying the US is the fastest and greatest and how dare they compare
It's strange and even seems like insecurity.. don't know why though kinda like a really hot girl that hates her body

2 riders have recently competed in both series, Decotis top 15-20 in the US struggled to adapt in Europe but I reckon he was top 15-20 speed and Osbourne top 5 some podiums in Europe, top 5 with some podiums in the US
seems pretty even to me, there's always gonna be a Tomac, Herlings, Roczen, Villopoto or Cairoli that dominate but after those guys the fields are too close to call

Steve, I totally get the business side of this deal and the need to work out details. I just hate how Geoff comes along and says stuff like we only have 3 fast guys in our 250 class and the rest are "no names".... It becomes a little tiresome and transparent, and it causes more people here to slag off on Europe, which is also unfortunate. He means to make the GPs look better, but he can't help himself to try to make our racing look less than it really is.

We are all very excited to have Dean Ferris come to our series and continue the long line of international talent that emigrates here and competes against our homegrown talent. He is a welcome addition to a very deep field and I hope he does as well here he did in MX2 this past year, and he was just brilliant at the MXON.

Geoff
If you made a deal with Steve Dixon to not mention this information, then got beat to the punch by every other "Journalist", that makes you
1.) Not a Journalist, and
2.) a crap "Errand boy".
Step it up, garçon
