Currently weighing the option of getting a Ohlins suspension set up for my RMZ 450. Been wanting to try a kit set up for ages however I have been recently exploring the option of a Ohlins set up. Anyone try this? Pros, cons? Im on the fence at the moment.....

I have tried Ohlins inserts and their rear shock and they are nice.....regardless if it stock, Ohlins or A Kit you still need to set them up or have them set up.

I had the TTX inserts and shock on my 08 RMZ450 and it worked great. I'm not good at bike setup by any stretch mind you. I got the correct springs, set sag and didn't turn a clicker, it was great. A year or so later I put the stock stuff back on and sold them for close to what I paid for them.

How fast are you? (not putting you down at all, just a lot of people wouldn't know the difference)

Also, there are some guys (not many) who really know what they're doing with suspension and can get stock components working very good. It takes time though, and a knowledgeable rider to give feedback.

I don't knowo personally, but look at Alessi. Wasn't he considerd a person who crashes a lot.? I don't think he has had a bad crash since the switch? However, I know their equipment is no comparriosn to the stuff we can get. But, you gotta start with a good base, so who knows.

From my limited knowledge it seems as though Ohlins stuff just works great out of the box. Bolt it on, ride and grin. Seems like skilled tuners can get these results with stock stuff it just takes some trial and error.

I just like to ride, so if I can get excellent results by swapping components it's very appealing to just do that rather than going back and forth with different setups trying to make the stock stuff work better.

I remember reading that Mike Alessi was not good at bike setup.. Who knows if it's true, but if I'm not completely talking out of my ass it would make sense why he liked the Ohlins stuff.

Thanks all for the input, Still tossing it around at the moment, I am doing more research and talking to more people to figure out what would be best. I wouldn't say it is something I need, it is more of a want.... Id like to try something different in the suspension world and compare to what I normally ride. Its more of a type of thing where try it while im still kinda young enough to be able to push it to try it out.... I don't know, time will tell.... Still doing research

Sometimes you can get the stuff at a very good price, I paid close to half of MSRP when I bought mine. Can't go wrong that way, you can recapture it when you sell the bike, just keep the stock stuff to put back on.

I agree with you, the only hold up I have is... Supposedly the 2015 Zook is going to be all new. The hold up I have is that If I like the stuff, Id love to be able to reuse again on another bike down the road if that is a 2015 zook, Would hate to buy and only be able to use it on the stuff I have currently and not transfer to newer model, but I guess that's the chance you take

I've tried a RM-Z450 2012 with Öhlins TTX suspension (Both shock and forks). Get it if you can afford it.
Even if the stock suspension is pretty good, the TTX combo is absolutely lovely. They are really easy to setup and responds suprisingly well to adjustments.
I went for the full Öhlins combo on my KX and it's a night and day difference. And so was the TTX shock on my CRF.

I know a couple of pro riders who tried the Ohlins in the outdoors and SX last year and both have gone back to Showa. There is a reason the Showa A-kit suspension is used by more pro riders running the outdoor nationals and SX. Check out the starting line at any pro race and a lot of privateers are running Showa A-kits and paying a lot for it, very few are running Ohlins.

The faster you are and the rougher the track the more you will benefit from the A-kit suspension. If you are not very fast and the tracks you ride are not rough, unless you ride SX, you will not really benefit over a well set up set of the OEM suspension.

Being from PA, you are not far from Chris Durham, PR2 Suspension, he has a pretty nasty test track at his shop and he is really good at testing with riders. He does a really good job and it would be a lot cheaper than the Ohlins set up or the Showa A-Kit.

I have it on my 13.5 ktm 450 and absolutely love it ! I think on ktm its a must, '' if its affordable to u''. on jap bikes u can get the stock stuff working really we ll. ktms with the wp u can get working good at one track n can be lost at the next track. my ohlins is by far the plushest suspension with great balance and bottoming control ive used on an mx bike. Suzuki 241 email me, I can prob get u your best price on a complete kit. mxboy2661@yahoo.com

I had Öhlins on my previous RMZ 450, I had them tuned from the factory here in Sweden. Best thing I have ever done to a bike. I had the feeling the stockers fade over a 30min moto.

I have used the gold forks (single chamber) back in the days but they are not close to what they offer today.

I'll most certainly go for Öhlins TTX rear shock for my KTM, not sure about the forks yet.

Read through this. This is a full on boner report from a local ohio ohlins purchaser. He equipped his 2013 rmz 450. Filled with pictures, difference in weight etc. good read. After you see this you'll spend the money. Haha. I almost did. Can't afford it right now though. Too many other grown up commitments.

I run the ttx inserts in my crf450 13 so I don't have to deal with the air. they are much better then PSF for sure but if I already had spring forks I wouldn't replace them. The differance isn't that big on the forks and you can revalve the stock forks to get good enough. The rear shock on the other hand is a big improvment from stock. Keep in mind though that you have to service the rear shock at 20hours. You will really notice when it goes bad.

I say go for it, if you want it and can afford it then you should get it. You can always sell it if it wont fit on your next bike. I like to trick out my toys and I have a carbon fiber addiction. the only person you need to make happy is yourself. No such thing as a waste of money if you want it and Ohlins is great stuff.

The TTX shock is def ride and grin stock (with correct spring), I have 2 bikes with it. The fork inserts not so much imo.

X2, the haters will say use only OEM. Your money, your choice. Good thing the haters do not work for FMF, pro circuit, aftermarket companies lol. Want and need is 2 different things, I say go for it also. Love seeing trick stuff.
