Currently weighing the option of getting a Ohlins suspension set up for my RMZ 450. Been wanting to try a kit set up for ages however I have been recently exploring the option of a Ohlins set up. Anyone try this? Pros, cons? Im on the fence at the moment.....
Also, there are some guys (not many) who really know what they're doing with suspension and can get stock components working very good. It takes time though, and a knowledgeable rider to give feedback.

I just like to ride, so if I can get excellent results by swapping components it's very appealing to just do that rather than going back and forth with different setups trying to make the stock stuff work better.
I remember reading that Mike Alessi was not good at bike setup.. Who knows if it's true, but if I'm not completely talking out of my ass it would make sense why he liked the Ohlins stuff.
Even if the stock suspension is pretty good, the TTX combo is absolutely lovely. They are really easy to setup and responds suprisingly well to adjustments.
I went for the full Öhlins combo on my KX and it's a night and day difference. And so was the TTX shock on my CRF.
Here is a link to my 2013 RMZ Ohlins build I did.
Love them!!
The faster you are and the rougher the track the more you will benefit from the A-kit suspension. If you are not very fast and the tracks you ride are not rough, unless you ride SX, you will not really benefit over a well set up set of the OEM suspension.
Being from PA, you are not far from Chris Durham, PR2 Suspension, he has a pretty nasty test track at his shop and he is really good at testing with riders. He does a really good job and it would be a lot cheaper than the Ohlins set up or the Showa A-Kit.
I have used the gold forks (single chamber) back in the days but they are not close to what they offer today.
I'll most certainly go for Öhlins TTX rear shock for my KTM, not sure about the forks yet.
Read through this. This is a full on boner report from a local ohio ohlins purchaser. He equipped his 2013 rmz 450. Filled with pictures, difference in weight etc. good read. After you see this you'll spend the money. Haha. I almost did. Can't afford it right now though. Too many other grown up commitments.
