I totally get that Monster wants their número uno rider at MEC. I totally get that money is the main motivation for riders in this, the ultimate young-man's sport. I totally get RV wanting to provide lifelong financial support for his family. What I don't get is that a whole freaking bunch of riders from all over the world sacrificed & risked to show support for their countries at MXON...our champion didn't.
He's gone and done better than most in recent years. He had to skip it this year although I believe he said he would have gone if it was scheduled after outdoors.

Wow DavidR I must have hit a nerve. If you're worried about a racer's family you should be hoping Josh Grant wins the Million. His family could really use the money. RV's family is already set. All more money is going to do for him is kill more big game. But hey, it's just words on a message board. I like RV and have nothing against him. I respect him and all the riders because I know how hard it is to do what they do. But you have to admit, RV, MEC and the MXoN is big news and it's all going to play out this Saturday. Apparently, no more than RV did you by not going to the MXON. I didn't create a new thread about RV & the MXON. It's been a few weeks now, let it go.

How many times had he sacrificed and won a race that very few people outside this niche sport even knows about?

If you need a surgery is it smarter to get it as early as possible just in case complications arise, or wait because you have a one off race that won't be talked about by the majority of fans after that week is over?

All of those "riders from all over the world" don't have the same obligations as RV, nor do any of the European riders have MEC nor have to be 100% ready in January at A1. I was actually in Germany and had to watch Belgium celebrate and others in the crowd taunt the Americans. I highly doubt anyone wanted him there more than I did at that moment. RV has gone to MXON before and will again, but to judge his decisions when you aren't in his shoes nor know all of the factors is a bit unfair.

We're all whores. We do what we do for the money. (Or hopes of making a ton of money -- e.g.privateer )

How many we're in the same situation as RV,needing surgery, having their season start Jan1? Probably none, can't compare apples to oranges.

GarySemics:pretty big assumption to say RV's family is set and more money will just mean more big game killed! The guy made a decision based on his circumstances,,have you never done that?

Didn't read all the posts, should have just agreed with JT$ instead of my fist comment!

Yes but the "whole freaking bunch of riders from all over the world" don't have a payer to win the Million bucks but RV is the odds on favorite to take the cash. Its a no brainier in my book and if RV does win the money he will show support to his country with the roughly 38% or more in taxes that his country will take.

A million dollars is a million dollars, I don't care who you are. I believe RV was full of crap when he said the surgery was being done so he'd be ready for A1. It was so he'd be ready for the MEC.

I personally think the USA would have won at MXON had Villopoto chosen loyalty to his country over personal greed...but we'll never know now. One thing for sure, RD, JB & ET all chose patriotism...and one of them may spoil RV's hat trick payday...and I won't be sorry to see it.
Team USA lost the MXdN because Eli launched himself into the stratosphere over Germany....after a spectacular blast through the pack. Hell of a ride till then.

As for 'Poto, duh, of course its about the money and Monster Energy. Given his circumstance and position in life that was an easy decision. I suspect the creation of a public statement to address the decision with the public took more time and effort by many other than Ryan. Having said that, I will not forget he did not go do battle for this country in 2013. Poor form.

A big treat for all moto fans.

I am starting to think Gary S. is a cool cat..

Settle down. No rational person is saying anything different. Just saying the guy that won our 450 SX and MX series would've been a better choice. You can't argue that.

I hope RV wins all three mains this weekend and tells everyone he's not sorry for missing the mxdn. We didnt lose it because he didnt go, although we probably wouldve won. We lost it because all 3 riders we sent lost it for the nation. Can't blame him for doing what he did, the race was 5 weeks after lake elsinore. Who wants to wait that long when he could get a head start on the competition after having plates removed from your leg? Go RV

I'm with you. Would much rather see a guy who put rest/medical rest to the side, and raced for America win it. Or a guy who could really use it.

RV probably thought RD,JB and ET would take care of business.
Now I'm gonna go ride my gold and platinum dirtbike that cost me $7500 out the door and it's just as good as RVs bike they should have sent me. Plus I have seen Roger in the pits and he waved to me.

Jus sayin

Or Mr. Semics was posting to stir the pot so he could get more hits to his like regarding the 55 Absolute Motocross Techniques...which he blatantly puts at the end of the post but not in his signature......

You both have the ability to determine when someone's family should be "set" financially and can also predict how they will spend any additional income that they earn? That's awesome. Saying RV is just going to spend any more money he gets on killing more big game is as assnine as saying that JG is just going to spend any more money he gets on another killer tatt.

The Supercross Monster Energy Cup is the biggest Supercross event of the year. I'm sure most of you already know, it's so big for Ryan Villopoto that he chose to race it instead of The Motocross of Nations. In case you don't know why, he is claiming it's because he needed to get ankle surgery right after the Nationals instead of waiting until after the Motocross of Nations. This way he would have more time to be healed up 100% before the 2014 Supercross opener at Anaheim. Who knows for sure, only RV. Most people think it's because Monster is offering 1,000,000.00 (yes that's one million dollars) for the rider who can win all 3 motos, which RV did in 2011. But again, I'm sure most of you already know that. Watch it live on Saturday Oct 19th at 9:00 PM EST on the Fox Sports 2 network. It's going to be interesting to see if Ryan's choices will pay off. I think they will as far as the money. But I would have rather had the US win the MXoN. What do you think?

Kawasaki pays him to win SX and MX races / titles. That's his job, that's how he earns his income and how he provides for his family. The window of time to make money riding dirtbikes is incredibly small, what 5 maybe 10 years max? For our own selfish reasons, we all would have loved to see him race the MXON myself included. But if you can't understand someone putting his family first and making a business decision based upon how he earns money to provide for his family then you are not being honest with yourself. How many of you here on this board have risked your career that you use to support your family to go do something for free that could jeopardize your career and your ability to provide for your family just because someone else thinks that's what you should do? RV obviously felt that attending the MXON and postponing his surgery until afterwards could have potentially impacted his ability to train, test and ride as he prepares for what he gets paid to do which in turn impacts his abilty to provide for his family. And Gary, to say "he is CLAIMING it's because he needed to get ankle surgery..." leads me to believe you must either have inside information that he didn't really need to get this surgery or you're a medical expert and you know that the surgery he "claimed" he needed wouldn't impact his 2014 preparation if he'd waited until after the MXON and that he was using the surgery simply as an excuse to get out of the MXON. Please elaborate more on this "claim" of his as you seem to know more about RV and his body than even RV does.

It will indeed be interesting about his choices, tell me,what are your thoughts about a suggestion in another thread that he could have done both events?

If he's on form and swinging in Vegas after an 8 week break from Lake Elsinore, then surely that'd prove he'd have been good for A1 if he'd had surgery after the MEC as it's an 11week break

Monster could've had marketing at both and we might not have had to endure the moaning as the MXdN was inbetween Lake Elsinore and the MEC and could've been includedq

On a side note, anyone think that Monster provides a "special" purse in the event that Villopoto (or other Monster rider) wins? Do you think the $1 million could be doubled for some of the Monster guys, sort of the way manufacturer win bonuses aren't remotely the same as posted contingency for the factory guys?

No it's not, but men and woman of the United States military have made this country what it is. One of the things the military had done is allow anyone to do what they choose and make it money if they're good at it.

Hell YES !! RV would be a fool not to put his full effort into the MEC race, I hope he wins all the money too.

He woulda taken the $$ and he's lying if he says otherwise!

The spam link at the bottom of the post says loud and clear what his intentions are...same as RVs make as much $$ as possible....

I don't know why the idiots that post in these threads refuse to ignore the fact that there is no way in hell RV got to make a decision on MXdN and Monster Cup by himself....I'd say probably 70% Monsters choice what he does, 30% his choice.

Hate on douchers...RV is one of the best we've ever seen and in 5 years all you dipshits will be worshipping him just like everyone does RC now and people loved to hate RC when he was on top too.

Ok...point(s) taken, Jason. You and Semics have first hand knowledge of what pressures & pullings there are on a rider at RV's level, and I sure as heck don't. I just wish RV would step up and just say it for what it is instead of leaving us to speculate.
