Can anyone explain what the Club Team thing is all about? Do you have to be fast to get on a club team? Which clubs get selected to participate? Is it just a matter of $$$ ???

Yes, you have to be fast to be on a club team. You have to race an ISDE qualifier (in an LOI-Lettet of intent-class) and then get an invite from the AMA. (I'm not an expert on it, but that is how I understand it).
I'm not sure how many club teams there are or how those club teams come to be though.
For example, Josh Knight, who is from Utah, and is racing on the Tony Agonis club team is a very fast A rider in the desert (he finished 5th overall at one of the hare and hound nationals-against all the factory and pro riders).
HAR! was thinking the exact same. Get outa my head David, its all fucked up in there!
It's all about expectations...we are expected (and expecting) to win the MXDN...we aren't expected (nor expecting) to do this well at ISDE, so a 2nd is a great result.

Titan1 your correct about the club team. At some of the ISDE's there are club guys that beat most of the Trophy guys. They get left off their Trophy teams because of politics. I think a club rider won the event overall one year in the mid 80's.
It seems also some of the club riders may not have had any connection to the club team a short time ago. An offroad club can be the main sponsor of a club team and pick up some guys that have qualified over the summer.
That's a great finish. Best since 1982 for team USA. Congrats to the whole team.
+1
Has there ever been a better ISDE location than this year? Friend of mine's daughter in laws family lives on the island of Sardinia and she has been there a few times and gives it gushing reviews.

I did the ISDE in 91 and 92. 91 on a club team and 92 on the Trophy team. A club applies with the AMA to send over a team. The clubs usually pick riders that have qualified to go from there local area and there is usually a top rider club team that is chosen by the AMA. You are not invited to go, you qualify to go. You are invited to be on the trophy or junior team so those riders don't have to qualify so they wouldn't have to miss a race in the chosen series they are competing in in case they have conflicting dates.
Really pleased for Zach winning the E1 mx test, lead start to finish! Loved the heal clicker over the line. Met him a couple of times when he raced here in England. Shame he's not riding at Farleigh Castle tomorrow at the final round of the British mx championship as he liked the track.
