Alright here goes. I just got home with a brand new 2012 leftover YZ125. $3,999!!!! Anyhow, I've never owned a Yamaha (I'm a Kawasaki guy but for $3,999...) so I'm looking for things to watch out for, pipe setup, sprocket sizing, etc. Any tips that you think would be helpful are appreciated.

Check Motocross Action Magazine's website. They have a ton of info on the 2005-2013 YZ125's.
Also, this is what our sport needs, a brand new $4k dirt bike that is easy/inexpensive to maintain, ride and race.

They started two weeks ago with 8 250s and 8 125s that the dealership owner got from a Yamaha auction. The 250s were gone when I got there on Saturday and I bought the last 125. The 250s were selling for $4,999.

Awesome deal. In '07 I paid $4k for a brand new '06 YZ 125. Read the manual and see what octane gas it needs. My '06 requires 97 or higher. If you run it on 93 pump gas, it won't run long before it burns up the plug tip and the detonation ruins the piston and possibly the jug. We have been mixing VP110 with the highest octane pump gas. Other than that, it's a great bike you will never want to get rid of. If you ever decide to 144 it, do it right and stay away from the Athena kit. It's junk. Have fun.

I am pretty sure that the octane rating of 97 that your manual refers to is RON (Research Octane Number) which is used in most countries like Europe, Australia, etc … BUT NOT IN THE US. Instead we use AKI (Anti-Knock-Index) which can also be sometimes called PON (Pump Octane Number). In the UK, France … 97 (RON) translates to 93 (AKI) in the US.
In other words, 93 pump gas is perfectly fine for your bike as long as the motor is stock.

Doesn't seem to be that way anymore. Anytime I run pump gas in my 2-strokes they detonate. Maybe it's a California thing, but I just get Avgas and mix it 50/50 and that solves it.

Don't do anything to it. Just go ride it!
I run pump gas with Yamalube and have no problems with detonation.

I'm riding a 2005 YZ125.

Holy crap!!! Congrats!!! That's just about 1k more than I paid for my clapped 2006. Lucky bastard!!! I run pump gas on mine (98 octane) 30:1, I have about 30h on it, as a vet B, just changed the piston, and the bike probably had 150 hours (+) on it. Jetting should be done with spec, but I figure the stock one should make you survive for a while.

Some claim a muffler increase the experience, I use the 304 PC one, and a Doma pipe, dunno if it improved anything other than look bling.

No way on earth would I put a 144 kit on it, I rarely see people riding these to their full potential (McDade was pretty close last season), doesn't matter if you are a 200 lbs guy on a sand track, master those 35 ponies before you do anything, get back to me in 20 years when you do! Grinning

Great deal. I love my 2009 YZ125. I paid $2600 for it and so far I've added the full Hinson Clucth Kit, Talon Hubs, DID Rims, FMF Pipe and Silencer, Fasst Flex Bars and Race-Tech did a full revalve and new springs on both front and rear. All she needs now is graphics, plastics and seat cover. I have a huge smile every time I ride that thing.

I went up one tooth (49) on the rear sprocket, installed an FMF Fatty pip and Shorty silencer and Boyesen reed on mine and I'm very happy with it.

My brother has a yz125 at our dads house. It's still like new because he never rode it. It's an 03, and I don't know why I never "borrowed" it. Lol. 450's are kinda boring to ride compared to a screamer bike.
