How about just putting out the payout schedule that shows what each position pays?

The intelligence in this thread is at an all time low.

If you guys have such great ideas a bank would be more than happy to give you a loan... Problem is you don't even have a half decent idea.

I am not aware of any professional motorsport where riders/drivers/teams can pay their bills based on the purse. I owned teams in SX/MX and in NASCAR. My old marketing guy, Sulli, is an owner/partner in IndyCar (won the 500 a couple of weeks ago). I closely follow F1 and talk with a number of people in that series. In all of racing, everyone in "the show" does not make money. Teams/riders/drivers are losing money in F1, IndyCar, NASCAR and SX/MX. I don't understand why you guys think that purse money should fund the bills. That is not how any professional racing works.

Riddle me this handyman, do the guys who finish last in a NASCAR race get points and money, or is it only the top 20 who get points and cash? Pretty sure all you have to do is start in NASCAR and you get points and cash.

You get paid, but not enough to pay your mandatory tire bill, plus your travel, mechanics, parts etc.

Regal ran the 2010 Nationals out of a Sprinter Van. We, Merge Racing, bought him four bikes to use for the summer. He finished the season with two podiums. And lost money as sponsors only provided product, no salaries. He then got picked up by a team for the following season and made money. That is racing.
Isn't that kind of the point? Meaning the last place guy in NASCAR gets points and money. No, it's not enough to pay all the bills, but it is something.

You would know more than me, but what other professional motorsport doesn't pay points/money to the last place guy? Can you imagine if NASCAR only paid top 20? Track would empty and so would the stands.

I'm not looking for huge payday for the 40th place rider, but seriously, it is professional sports and the last place guy should be reconized with points and some money.

Biggest arguement for not doing this is there is no money. How can there be no money and points for a rider who qualifies? Your telling me the budget is so tight, that there isjust scraps for the 20-40 finishers? If that is really the case, then this sport is really F'ed.

Every year, hell every race we hear the numbers are up, more people are coming to the races, TV ratings are good, yet there is no more extra money? Where is it going?

Simple math here, just humor me ok...

20,000 paid spectators

so 20k x 40 bucks a ticket=800K

Your going to tell me with a straight face that with 800k you can't pay out more than 16 grand per moto?

About 64k goes out in purse money. 800k - 64=$736,000 Man, I'd love to see real numbers on where the money goes. By the sounds of it mx is just barley getting by on over 700K per weekend, and my estimates are on the low side.

Thats not counting the concessions, parking, merch, and so on.

I'm no accountant, but I'm guessing I could find some extra money to kick down for the 21-40 riders.

I'm not looking to argue or get into a pissing contest with anyone, but really how can you not pay the 30-40 finisher more than 250 bucks a moto?

Holigan, I respect your opinion, and not calling you out at all, you do have knowledge and I'm just running my theory up the flag pole and seeing where it goes..

How much does the TV package cost alone? Go from there.

Then add up fuel alone for trucks...

I know people think DC is making billions on the outdoors but he's not

The sport will continue for whatever MXSports and the AMA want to do with it. It's their sport, they put it on and racers show up to race in it. We all see things that would make it better, but, c'mon, it's their business not ours.

Well I have no clue what TV package costs, or how much revenue they generate from it. I can hit google and with some hunting I can find out what NASCAR, the NFL, MLB, NBA, PGA, and the NHL TV contracts are, but I can't find dick about MX, so I'm left to ask the questions. If you know the numbers, spill it and show me, once you do that, I have no problem admitting my numbers are flawed and I haven't a clue as to what I'm talking about. Punch in some numbers what you think the series is making a week?

Yeah you are forgetting the $225x80 entries in each class for another $18,000, the cost of pit passes for mechanics and family, the red bull and other sponsor money. How does the local circle track do it that they can get 2,500 spectators on a good night but still allow the participants to make enough to pay for tires/gas the next week

Muddy Creek was a great looking track, almost even had infield viewing. I've said it before, if there are tracks like that out there, take Elsinore's race away and give it to one of those other tracks.

Not looking to argue, but how is the fan experience any better now than it was four years ago?
you are wrong about one quick lap your in thing. i do like how they changed it to where the last 4 spots are raced in a lcq race after practice is over. i believe it makes it better for the fans at the race.

For the 2010 season, the NFL received $3.785 billion from contracts with CBS, ESPN, FOX, NBC
The NBA makes 930 million dollars per year from ESPN and TNT
Last year, Fox, TBS and ESPN inked new, eight-year broadcasting deals that will bring MLB a total of $12.4 billion

I know some of you think that MX gets an equivalent deal, but they don't
MX and SX PAY to be on TV. They don't get any money for that, they actually lose a good chunk of change just for that. It's a paid commercial to get people to attend the races.

Now let's do insurance, DMG lease, hotel rooms, and that 800k starts dwindling fast.

Some of you need to join the real world.

I'm not so naive to think that mx is on a scale with any of the major sports. Like you said it's a commercial, but mid day on a weekend on a back cable channel can't be that much. Plus they sell commercials on the broadcast, so that has to help cover the cost.

We keep hearing about how little the profit margin is in this sport, but what do we really know, nobody comes out with actual numbers. If they are on such a thin margin, maybe it's time to re-evaluate things and the direction of the sport? Maybe were not ready for same day coverage?

Again, I know there is insurance, advertising, employees, gas, equipment, security, but again, I have no real numbers to go off of. All I can go off of is ticket prices and attendance.

So Choppy, let me ask you this, how much money do you think the MX Nationals bring in a week? How much do you think it costs to run the series? Just your best guess will do..

What I am telling you is that in professional motorsports, you cannot fund a race program based on the purse.

Families spend small fortunes in the amateurs in all forms of motorsports to get their kid noticed and picked up by a good team that pays a salary when they turn pro. Those that don't get chosen sometimes continue to spend their own money in the pros in an attempt to get noticed and move to a good paying ride. And in F1, IndyCar and NASCAR, a number of pay drivers bring sponsors or family money to teams to get a ride. I am not aware of any pro racing where the program can be funded by the purse.

On the numbers, I have never sat down with DC or any of the track owners and asked them about their revenue or expenses. I have produced a lot of television and know that the sport has to pay to be on the networks. Motocross is like that amateur that did not get picked for the good ride, it has to pay to compete with the other sports on television. Unfortunately this will take a huge chunk of money.

I agree, your not going fund a team by purse money alone. I'm not talking a team though, I'm just talking about getting the 40th place rider like 500 bucks a moto finish.

I'm just thinking, if one is bringing in close to a million dollars for a race, there should be more than sixty grand to pay the riders. The fact that people don't see this as a problem fustrates me.

Wife and I used to watch your home improvement shows all the time when we bought our first house.

It frustrates me you can't understand how much these people really bring in.

I at least gave some numbers, you can't give me any numbers when it comes to mx.

The information on other similar events are out there if you don't want to be lazy.
My best bet, when everything is done for the year, they break even.

SX I don't think even makes the amount you're claiming.

Thanks for watching.

Working on a new television series that will be huge (no racing, no home building). It will go big around the world in January. More details later.

The surfing analogy, I don't see a lot of parallels to the challenges we have. Waves are free. The ocean is free. There is no rent on the North Shore, no upkeep of that part of the sea, no liability exposure, no property taxes, etc... Surfing is a comparatively cheap sport to any form of racing, and it's probably sponsored by Pac-Sun, or Quiksilver, or Billabong, or whatever -- they don't make motorcycles and they haven't been hurt by the economic slowdown of the last four years.

I wish I could snap my fingers and double the purse, but I can't. I wish that people like huck didn't think the sport were dying, because it's not. But it's not perfect for everyone, and it will never be perfect for the privateers. I was one so I know how difficult it can be. I am making the best fixes I can to this series, but not everyone will agree, and that's fine. It will just make us work harder to get it right. I have found that the best way to fix a problem is to simply go to work.

DC
MX Sports
I wish it wasn't dying too, but like my grandpa used to say... "you can wish in one hand, and shit in the other...let me know which fills up first".

If you don't think it's dying, ask your local dealers how many bikes they sell. Ask your local tracks how their entries are. The Vet classes seem to be consistently the biggest classes (around here anyway), to me, that shows a dying sport...without new 'blood' getting involved.

Don't sweat the naysayers, as they will criticize each and every move you make! Anybody that can't see the improvements you've made in the last few years, is either blind, or dumb.

This is a NO WIN situation for DC. I am truly surprised he even gets on here and makes posts. People don't even read the previous posts before making their own uneducated assumptions, much less have an idea of what it costs a track owner(not promoter-do you know the difference)) to hold an event of this magnitude.

DC already said the track owner pays the purse which is set by the promoter(Mx Sports). MX Sports has the means set up to pay the riders through the AMA, which the AMA charges MX Sports for that service along with other services they provide. Mx Sports provides this service as part of their agreement with the track. Now when DC mentioned the tracks were being charged another $4k this year, some seemed outraged they charged the tracks more money to be part of the series.

In reference to the above post: DC(Mx Sports) said that the track owners keep the spectator entry money Now this genius with the last post that knows all of the track owners expenses to run a national is saying the tracks are making so much money they can pay more. Next time you go to a national(if you have ever been to one), take a look at the property, structures, the heavy equipment, the staff, and how many things are going on at any given time. The porta potty bill would be enough to make you shit. Now that is just the visible stuff. It is mind boggling the amount of work and manpower it takes.
.
Learning the difference between a promoter and a track owner might be where some of you may want to start, because from reading some of these posts they obviously do not know the difference.

I am not sure what it cost to have the National televised, but if you ever get a chance to be there the day before( perhaps for amateur racing) take a look at the TV trucks(semis) location and the miles of cable buried all throughout the track going to all the different cameras bringing all the coverage to us. So, since the sport does not have a large enough viewing audience to have a TV station pay money for the coverage, MX Sports needs to foot the bill. So this means they need an other department in MX Sports to handle getting advertisers to help offset the costs of the TV coverage they are providing for you and I.

Basically there is a lot more to it than most people realize. Next time you go to a race, take a close look around you, and I think you will have a new appreciation for the promoters and track owners.

Just my 2 cents worth. Moto On!

So here is a big hint as to how much you get paid: No more than is necessary for you to show up and do your job.

The privateers keep showing up and chase the dream. When the gates can't be filled, the pittance will be adjusted accordingly.

What is the difference to a spectator if you are being lapped once or twice, you are not in the hunt. Thinking otherwise is a lot like the wmx, a handful of vocal family members, but outside of them, few followers.

They could always double the ticket price to get in and use all that money for the purse.
