Look dipshit, you going into every thread and saying RV is the best ever just isn't interesting. Nothing wrong with guys having favorites and ribbing other people in good fun, but what you do is just boring and has no flair sorry, jmo Woohoo

I think James wont do the speed needed to win, He cant afford to crash out this year, he'll be out of a job.

If he was able to take more risks he could set the pace.

Actually think he nailed it. Its a strategic approach to racing. I completely agree with JS7 analysis

I think of that GoPro video Bubba had the other day that showed Villopoto passing him, every corner and straight away you could see RV pulling away and getting smaller and smaller until he's not in sight any more, Bubba had to be thinking to himself Damn! how in heck do I match THAT!! speed, because he knows he can't and his spirit gets broken and he just races within his comfort level. It's actually smart, because it keeps him in the Game in case something goes bad for RV and he can capitalize on it for he Championship, but Bubba knows he's never been able to ride that fast. This view has to get old after awhile for some of these riders:

This is comical "but Bubba knows he's never been able to ride that fast."

We definitely do not know the Bubba's reason for racing 90%-95%. It could be health, sponsorship, tired of injuries, new race strategy.... he is definitely racing below his comfort zone. To win, you have to be 105%. RV is racing a tad out of his zone and he is cleaning house.

Thank you. I agree with your claim... Villo and passing. He is the best passer in the game... maybe history of the sport. Additionally, at the 18-20 minute mark, he finds a second on the rest. This is where I agree with the author of this thread.

While I am by no means a big James fan, RV being the best passer the sport has ever seen... c'mon!!! How quickly we forget.

Racing starts at the SeVen minute mark coincidentally Wink http://www.allisports.com/motocross/video/thunder-valley-2012-450-moto-… James starts a lil' out of the top ten, LEADING in what... two laps!

If you look at the lap times from yesterday Moto 1, you see that RDs fast lap was a 2.04.390; RVs was a 2:04.465. RV took the lead on lap 10, and from there through lap 14, he pulled 5 seconds on Dungey or about 1 second a lap average. And RV pulled 3 seconds on the lap when he passed Dungey - no doubt some of that is because of roost and line swapping to avoid Villo, but you see a guy pull 3 seconds in one lap and you have an automatic idea that you're not going to catch him. Where things went wrong with Dungey is his last 3 laps were 2:07 - 2:12s. When Villo surges like that, Dungey needs to grin in his helmet and say, "Go ahead, bro, you'll pay for that on the last lap" and put his head down and keep after him all the way to the end. Even if he doesn't get past, Villo will remember that next time. Get close this week and Villo will know he needs to save a little next week.

In the second moto, it was similar, but Stewart was also in the mix. Fastest second moto laps were RV 2:06.157; RD 2:06.757; Stewart 2:07.336. And Villo was in front most of the time running clean laps.

This season ain't over yet. Not hardly.

I'll tell you what race did it for me..... Monster Energy Cup I. I was sitting second row up after the long whoop section. It literally took RV2 two turns to make a pass. RD5.... a lap to make a pass on the same guy.

Of course.... you can make a strong case for RJ.... see LA SX 1987 where he went from 17th to First

This thread boggles my mind!!!

Is it ever a good strategy to let yourself get passed, intending to pass the guy back later on in the race... close to the end? Hell NO! To many things can go wrong. I just don't see it, sorry...

@bd I don't remember much from the RJ, DB, O'Show etc era much, sucks really Sad

It's not a matter of letting yourself get passed, it's a matter or realizing that you and two other guys can go the same speed flat out and none of you can go that speed the whole race, and figuring out what tactics work best for you. For James, pure speed and aggression at the beginning and hang on; for Villo, stay with the other guys until the middle and break their hearts with 4 or 5 blistering laps; for Dungey, stay within 4 or 5 seconds and then dial it down to WFO for the last 5 laps. Not only are we lucky to have 3 guys who can all race at the same speed, we also have 3 guys with different temperments and strengths, and it's a contest to see which one can capitalize on their strengths and cover their weaknesses the best. It will be an epic season - if nobody gives up. And I don't think these guys give up easy.

I think It's a conflicting matter for the fan, I think part of them like to be the only member on the bandwagon, or at least the most vocal one, so maybe it might be an either unconscious or an conscious approach to perform poorly, when trying to make people understand their point of view. Pretty evident here on VItal, people get so annoying by the unfiltered garbage, so arguments gets lost towards the star rather than the issue, "the fan", while the fan always can use/exploit his star to prove his "point".

Rather than saying your conclusions are flawed, I should have stated I just don't agree with them. That being said, I'm going to stop with my replies, they only serve to try and show you're wrong, which you may not be. Either way, for now we'll have to agree to disagree, and I'll keep this in mind as the Nats' continue on for the summer Wink

Heck, I didn't think of it as an argument, just a good bench racing session. Who knows? Villo could go 24 and oh or he could get dinged up next week, then all the bench racing is irrelevant. But this time last year we were wondering what kind of supercar Stewart was going to buy with his championship bonus.

In RV's 2nd moto podium interview, he actually said that RD was a guy you couldn't let up for because he would catch you at the end... so , I think he's already got that in the back of his mind.

Villo knows that to be true in his mind. Now Dungey needs to make him feel it in his body, or Dungey will spend a long Minnesota winter thinking about it.

Great post Whknuckle; the most interesting thread I have read in a while. And it seems true. Mountain biking is Aldon's background and there are strategies similar to running in that sport. Aldon seems like a sharp dude, so it would not surprise me if he had some influence on RV's racing approach. It also fits nicely into RV's aggressive riding style.

MX is the same as SX as it pertains to the start. Alessi is the exception. If Villipoto gets the start, the race is over. If James or Dungey gets it, RV is in mach 2 to get the lead. RV is the one that everyone has to beat. James can't ride like that anymore, neither can Reed. After 2 races RV has a 12 point lead on Dungey. That means Dungey has to win the next 4 motos to tie with him. If he continues to be 2nd after the next race, he'll be 18 points behind with 9 races left, which means he would have to win the next 6 motos, with RV coming in 2nd to be even. That's half the season. This is assuming no mechanical problems or crashes for either. RV and RD are the only contenders for the championship. Dungey is as fit as Villipoto is, but doesn't have the aggression level RV does. He wastes too much time getting around slower riders, while Villipoto is gaining time on him. Dungey needs to wake up right now, if he wants the win, but I think he's happy with seconds.

There is no way RD is content or happy with seconds. Vital at its finest

There are at least three ways to win races: You can do it like RC, and ride every lap faster than anyone else can ride one lap; you can do it like Dungey and ride fast until the last quarter of the race and slowly twist the screws on everyone else until they give up; or you can do it like Villo, and get into the middle of the race and throw in 4 warp speed laps and kill everyone else's spirit. Villo knows that if he can pull out 4 or 5 seconds, the rest of the guys will capitulate.

Distance runners do that too. Some set a very fast pace early and hang on late, some run with the pack and surge until they break everyone's will to fight back, and some wait until the last few miles and win with a kick at the end. And it's always possible to counteract any tactic - mostly by recognizing what the other guy is doing and believing in your own tactic more than fearing your competitors'.

If Dungey or Stewart are going to derail Villo, they have to recognize what he's doing, why he's doing it, and how to keep believing in their own plans. For Stewart, that means he has to ride the first 6 or 7 laps absolutely WFO and make Villos surges too little too late. The danger is that he may crash and stir up the Internet haters yet again, but that's the only way he can win. For Dungey, that means recognizing that Villos surges take a lot out of him, letting Villo get his 5 seconds, but never let him get more than that, and Dungey is going to have to start a hard, sustained charge with at least 10 minutes left, keep pushing Villo when his surges are wearing him down, and try to beat him into the ground at the end.

Stewart and Dungey can both win races, but they're going to have to keep their spirits up, keep believing in their own plans, and when Villo puts on the big surge in the middle, make him pay for it. Otherwise "There's always next year."
dungey had fastest lap first moto...so warp speed isn't His weapon on Dungey...ironically it's consistent and fitness :0

Here's my take, at the beginning of the race the track is slippery from just being watered. We saw how he pushed early in the race and almost went down in that left hander. He regrouped and just rode somewhat mellow until the track dried out. that's when we saw that surge of speed you speak of. Once out front he just managed his lead.

my 2 cents
