Go ahead and “LOL” but yea I’ve never had one. I figure I’ve saved millions so far but knew this day would come and there’s no turning back.

When it comes to spending $$ on the latest new fangled gadget vs M/C’s and parts the motosickel’s always win out. Do people really camp out @ the Apple Store is that fake? Woohoo

Our flip-phones are on their last legs so need to get a smart phone very soon. Will get a packaged plan for the g/f and I.

Preferences:

Cost of service (presently @ 48 per mo), I won’t need a LARGE data plan and have WIFI @ home.

Large enough screen to surf the web, those small screens with my poor vision don’t seem sufficient although it might just take getting use to?

FREE phone

Good service and Clarity (hate dropped calls)
Easy to text
take & send pics video
Durable

I want to stay with Verizon been with them 20+ yrs but this doesn't seem to matter correct? Seems like everyone wants to make a deal.

What are the Pro/Cons of staying with Verison vs getting one at Costco or Best Buy?

I always thought I-phones were the best but Consumer Reports rates them low.

Verizon has the I-phone 4 for free.

My neighbor has the Samsung-galaxy-note-2. He showed me some of it’s capabilities and they were pretty damn cool.

Thanks! Cheerful

If you don't care for smaller screens don't go for the iPhone 4. It's definitely the smallest on the market of high end smartphones.

I'm using a Google/LG Nexus 4 right now and love it, but its not available on verizon. great balance of size and build quality, fast, great camera, functionality...

The Samsung Note is huge! Are you ready to carry a man-purse around?

If you like the Note though, Samsung Galaxy series is the way to go. For verizon it's down to the Galaxy and iPhone 5, my dad's used quite a few HTC models and they just don't hold up/work as smoothly as the others. The iPhone 5 has a great camera though, and is pretty simple to use. I personally prefer the Galaxy for the android OS, and you can choose between the Galaxy 3 or 4. Galaxy 3 probably has all the functionality you could use in a phone, i've heard the new features in the 4 are a bit gimmicky. Verizon hands down has the best coverage. Wish i could say the same about their customer service (imo).

I like my Nokia Lumia 920 windows phone. Good camera, easy to use, can use touch screen with motorcycle gloves on (not special touch screen gloves).

Whatever you get, purchase a quality case for it. I suggest either an Otterbox or a Lifeproof case. Nothings worse than dropping your new phone and shattering the screen on it!

I have a Iphone 5 with Verizon and I'm happy with it. I asked for a trial period and they gave me 30 days to try it out. I live a couple miles from Washougal MX in the trees and reception is sketchy. I have no land-line because I don't want to pay for one so reception at my house is critical. Reception varies from device to device. My wife has the same phone, same plan. Her phone gets crap reception while my phone works well. I'm not sure why?

Always ask for a trial period to test out the device. You have to pay for minutes but your not locked into a contract until the trial period is over.

How much do you have to spend on phones? I have an iPhone 4s through Verizon and when I got the phones they were $199/ea with a 2yr plan and with unlimited everything for me and the wife it's about $190/mo. If I had it to do over, I would have went to Straight talk through WalMart. You have to pay retail price for the phone, iPhone 5(bigger screen) is about $549/ea, BUT you get unlimited everything for $45/mo per phone. So $1100 for 2 phones(crazy, right?), but only $90/mo. So you save $100/mo. So after only 11 months, you've saved $1,100 on your phone bill which would cover the cost of the phones. More money up front, but over a 2 year contract you would be saving $2400 vs going with Verizon. And the cool thing is Straight Talk has any carrier you want. So you can get Verizon through Straight Talk. They also offer the Samsung Galaxy S III if you don't want an iPhone.

Personally I love my iPhone. The list of apps is crazy. I can change TV channels with it, set my DVR to record the next race if I'm not home, control my home thermostat from anywhere in the world(saves a ton on heat/air bills), and virtually anything else I want to do. I also plug it into my trucks AUX input to use the GPS and listen to satellite radio for free using Pandora.

Thanks for the info guys, went down to Verizon and got a couple Samsung Galaxy S III phones 2GB of data.

Damn this is gonna take getting use to!

I held out as long as possible—going to see if they will want my old phone as a museum piece. But maybe not the flip part was literally hanging on by a wire--true story! Woohoo

Not a bad move G. Does that come with 32 gib internal memory? If you're like me the older I get the nicer the bigger screen is. My Galaxy SII has a 4.5 inch screen and I'm now wishing for bigger. The Galaxy Note II is looking good lots of great owner reviews I just worry about its 16gb of internal storage which equals out to about 9 gb for the user with Jelly Bean as the OS version. Also looking at the HTC One with its 32gig internal memory just wish it had a slightly larger screen.

I've got that phone. Picked it up a few months back after a couple of years with the iPhone 4. There are things I like about each of them and lots of features I'll never even know about let alone use.

The Note II is my first android. So far I like it. It's more intuitive than I thought it would be after using he iPhone and iPad for the last couple years. I love the big screen as my eyes aren't getting better with my age. It's a big phone, though, and when you through the Otter Box case on it it certainly isn't that easy to throw in the front pocket like the iPhone was.

I know how you feel, I just upgraded a few weeks ago to the same phone you got . I had a Nextel flip phone. I have to have my wife teach me everything but its pretty nifty.

My service is through US cellular
-Otter box for protection
-2GB per phone of data per month
-with all the tax $179/month for two phones. Outrageous, to think 10 years ago i was spending $30 per month .

It has the 16 gig which is fine for me right now as I don’t know how to do much with it while I’m getting use to it. I just hope I don’t become one of those people who’s whole life is wrapped up in their phone.

If anyone sees me walking down the street texting—please shoot me…

The phone is pretty fast right now do you need a 32 gig?

Yep,
I'm not looking foward to the first bill. I'm with Verizon and hope it will be around 130-140 for two.

I don't what they have for the Samsung you got but look for a find my phone app. If you lose your phone and it has enough battery left you can see right where it is from another phone. These things are expensive and thieves love em.

Lookout Mobile is what youre looking for there. I had lookout on my S3, works great as an antivirus as well. One of the newer features of it is that they implemented a feature that just before the phone dies, it sends a GPS signal out to the server so you can find the last known location.

Another option is the "mobile protection pack" offered by Asurion, which is the company that administers the insurance offered by your cell provider. Same type of deal there, but there is $ involved with that program.

Thanks for the info.

So what's the best place to get accessories. I think we get 20% off @ the Verizon store, need to check.

Need auto charger
Saw an external speaker, are they any good? Guess I need to know where to download music.
Screen protectors at Best buy they have two one HD for 25 and one for 20! holy moly!

Anything else?

Thanks

Lots of the blame for low computer sales, laptop and desktop is no one wants to deal with windows 8. When people from microsoft come out and say windows 8 is junk then you know its bad.

For my Note 2 the best deal was the bundle at the Verizon store. The Otter Box case and the higher power car charger came together and then there was a 22% discount through my wife's work. The Note 2 won't charge on the older, under powered micro USB car chargers that I have about 20 of laying around. ....

I just stopped using my iPhone 4S and picked up a Galaxy 4 on Saturday. Initial impression is very positive.
