Good post Uncle of 2 and a question worth asking. I think RD was coming on like a freight train and would have passed RV anyway tho. In reference to RC I say yes he got into championship mode a couple of times and rode cautiously. A smart man would. I think there is a million dollar bonus on the line.
Most guys who disagree just want to stir up shit instead of answer the question.
Not that it means anything but my wife who has been going to MX races since 1983 with me, my sons, and now grandson and is absolutely "over it" at this point in her life. Happened to walk by the tv and watched for a second because she heard the crowd go nuts said "why did that guy let him past" when it happened and walked away. I asked her before I posted this what made her think that one guy let the other by and she said "he stood up and coasted for a second as the orange bike went past". She has no idea who is who and no interest in Sx at all. Fans of each rider will see what they want to see when it comes down to it.
Great race, thats for sure.
I agree with this. Also agree with Uncle that had the race been closer, I think RV would have taken bigger risks to stay ahead. I don't think it discredits anything Dungey has done because he executed his goal for the race. Win.

I'm not sure that getting confrontational with UO2 is wise either. One of the few insiders that post here. How about respectfully disagreeing with him rather than bashing his character or putting words in his mouth.

Both guys are class acts and fast as hell. I'm a RV fan over dungey. Only because I like RV's style better, his aggression on the bike is awesome to watch. But sat night Dungey was aggresive as hell something I haven't seen out of him lately. Dungey is sneaky fast. GREAT RACE!!!!! Hope the last 3 and all of outdoors go like this as well.

It was pretty apparent that Dunge was really comfortable out there, he was as smooth and as clean as he ever is, but was pushing it hard...

For what it's worth i don't think RV was pushing it once he realised Dunge had his pace, but he didn't have too as pointed out in this thread, and also, if you look at these two head to head, i'd put money on Dungey often tracking RV when the track is slick, and visa versa when there is excess traction... Last night looked slick to me. RD wins.

In 2005 and 2006 Ricky Carmichael won the supercross championships with out winning any of the last 5 races. Does anyone
think he could have won any of those races or was the Championship more important then the win. RV1 needs only to finish 4th
or better in the last 3 races to win the Championship. Does it make since to let someone by or fight to the end at every race. I
am not saying he didn't try his hardest to win this last weekend, but don't you think it would have been the smart choice to not
duke it out when a mistake could cost you a championship. Just my .02 cents worth. GoRV1!Woohoo
2006 James was the fastest all year and won the last 6 races in a row. He won the world c'ship and should've won the AMA, but they gave RC his points back when RC pouted. Even CR said at one point, he considered James the Champ in 2006.Woohoo kinda like this year with the whole flag fiasco at St. Louis!Whistling

Now, back on point! Yes, I think your nephew was going as fast as he could Sat. night and flat out got beat! Now we will see if he has the discipline to back it down these last 3 races.

There are 6 records RV will never get: 1. most SX wins. 2. most SX c'ships 3. most SX wins in a season. 4. most SX wins in a row. 5. most MX c'ships. 6. most MX wins. that goes for 450 & 250. Now that I think about it, I don't think RV will hold any records by the time his career is over!Sad

See what I did there? RV is a good racer, but he's not greatness!

Remember when rv1 beat srewart in vegas and everyone said stewart let him win. My point is you never want to give your competition that kind of confidence.

Quite a few records there. If things keep going the way they have been......he will probably be 2nd with the most combined championships ( behind RC ). Which means he would be the 2nd best racer to ever throw a leg over a bike. Championships are what count......and are what the record books show as "The best".

I think I would have waited for someone else to post your point Todd LOL...but I think for the most part the behavior has been at minimum civil for the Vitards. Your nephew has grown into a great champion...one that rivals the best of our sport (flame on).
But I'm sure he wanted that win last night, he knows how precarious the weather and track conditions can be at Centrylink Field and in Salt Lake. He also knows what a formidable opponent RD is; great program, racer and individual and the one he needs to put some distance on. I don't doubt he rode with risk management and I agree with Crush that the track suited RD let alone that atmosphere. But its most of our opinions on the board that when it comes to fighting for position, RV's going to win that battle over the Dung. I'm sure with 5 laps left and caught RV didn't want to just hand him three points so he made it as difficult as he safely could have. Great race for RD, moving up, hanging tough and pushing past and not being denied. That's going to give RD needed momentum closing out this SX season. Most of us expect RV to handle his points lead well...especially if he keeps getting those starts.

embarrassment to the family. I do go to the SX races, but I usually cheer for my nephew and could care less about those who

Considering you're the Billy Mays of pushing the RV product here I'm sorry. I'm still not buying it. I'd hate for you to lose sleep over my opinion.

So, what you're saying is that if the points had been close, RV would have blown them both up like at St Louis in 2010.

Okay.

Yeah, I'm sure he didn't want to be 25+ points ahead of Dungey.
He wanted to make it so a DNF from a mechanical/bad luck could give the championship away.

Good thinking.

When RC coasted to the finish in 2003, Reed was the better rider most of the year and for sure at the end. There was no overcoming the fact that Reed had a couple of bad races at the start of the year when the worst either got most nights was second.

Dungey is a lot like Reed, starts slow and builds through the season. At this point in time Dungey is the best SX rider in the world and has been for several weeks. The best rider doesn't always win, the best package does. RV has the whole package together and should be able to coast to the title but to say that he didn't 100% want to win is an excuse just like RC in 2003.

I was at the race and RV was racing hard all the way to the finish and wanted to win for sure. Was he willing to ride over his head to win....probably not as he understands the big picture as does Dungey. It's not like Dungey is going to risk making a huge mistake either with the outdoors coming up. They both rode to hard to win within their comfort zone and Dungey was faster saturday night plain and simple. Congrats to both riders on an awesome race! Dungey has been getting faster but it is probably going to be a little too late to make a championship difference.

Uncle of 2 what were your thoughts in 2010 when Dungey was "riding smart" for the championship when he had a healthy points lead on RV? I think it all comes down to the starts the next few weeks if Dungey gets the holeshot RV is going to ride smart and take what he can, he is not going to ride over his head to catch Dungey but if he can ride within his comfort zone to catch him and win...he will.....Dungey had similiar situations in 2010 and RV had a run of races because he was getting out front which to his credit is what he needed to do at that time and was definetly making a hard charge toward the finish. Of course some people want to think that Villopoto dominated that whole year and if he wouldn't have gotten hurt he would have won the championship easily. We all see things through different colored glasses I guess. The problem I have with these posts is they always seem to come up to discredit Dungey and his speed. I mean if it was any other rider and they were the fastest qualifer and had the fastest lap in their heat and in the main event and caught and passed someone who rarely gets caught and passed would their be much debate about who was the fastest on that given night?

Uncleof2 I know that you respect RD so I don't mean to pick on you particularily but it just kind of gets old after awhile.

Just my opinion Go RD5!

good post.

Dungey was absolutely the best guy on Saturday night, and RV was in a great position to get another win. i would not be surprised if RV does in fact back it down and go into championship mode, but i just don't think he has it in him. he wants to win, no matter the point spread. but fact of the matter is that RD was just a little better overall on the night and he earned that win.

It might have been the smart thing to let him by and not fight with him, but Ryan fought for that win. Anyone who thinks Ryan let him by is full of shit, you dont chop someones line twice and make contact twice unless you want to win.

Come on, your his uncle, you better then anyone here knows the kid is a racer and laying up isnt in his DNA . No need for excuses, they both rode great and had the best race of the year.

I was thinking, "What the fuck is RV doing??" those last few laps!! The dude was still going for it, and it seemed like he was risking too much in doing so-what a great race by two bad bad dudes. Dungey needed to catch fire earlier in the series, and get some better starts-if he started like Alessi I think we would have a pretty tight series! I love the mutual respect thing afterwards, sorry but nice to see after such a hard fought race. These two just keep elevating each other.

So, this morning, dropping our kids off at school...

Myself & one of "The Trainers off the Moto-Stars" were having a laugh over the idea that RV held-back!? This "trainer-guy" has a few Titles & Moto-skills...he knows this stuff: "Did these people watch the same race that we did? How many times did the Ryan's run up on each other, try different-crazy lines & take chances racing for that win? I mean THAT was a Race!"

I'm still laughin'...

Valid question, and one we will hear a lot about for the remaining races. I didn't see RV lay up and ride like he was obviously trying to just run out the clock like RC CLEARLY did on several occasions. What I saw was RV settling into a pace that was fast and that he was comfortable with. He looked like he was saying "You are going to have to outride me to beat me because I can do this pace all day." RD outrode him. RV tried for the win and the race was fun, but it wasn't RV's night. Would it have been different if RV was 10 points down? Maybe. He might have put Dungey down when they hit, but I don't think he would have outran him on that track. RD looked in top, top form.

There's only ONE racer who gets "credit" for wins more so than wininng championships. And, that racer has never backed up ANY of his titles, much less won two titles in a season! And THREE 'PEATING isn't even in any discussion regarding his career. I only mention this as "pressure" from being expected to win championships, year after year, is totally different from individual race wins.

So yeah, RV might be feeling a little of that championship PRESSURE, as most racers would, and simply does what he's PAID to do. If you watch his interviews, and listen, most of the time he states it's a JOB! And he's paid to WIN, the championship.

There have been several seasons where's he's been way down in points and rides his ass off to recover... and then, once he's leading the points, it's his luxury to only ride as hard as he has to. Seems pretty simple to me.

No matter how anyone on this forum or elsewhere's see's it, that's the freaking bottom line. Bring home the number one plate.

Oh and, Uncleof2... there is a difference between stating FACTS versus personal observations and/or speculations. Most here cannot discern the difference. With that being said...

Your nephew is one of the greatest the sport has ever seen, even if his career was to stop today. So hell yeahs... GO RV!

this thread is straight gay

1. RV let Dungey by so he didn't crash himself out of the title
2. RV couldn't run RD's pace without crashing
3. RD's pace was too fast for RV to run safely
4. RV's safe racing pace was slower than Dungey's
5. RV didn't want to crash, so he slowed down
6. RV didn't need those 3 points so he let RD have them
7. RV wanted his uncle to make a thread so he let RD by
8. RV couldn't race as fast as Dungey without crashing
9. Dungey felt safer at a faster pace than RV
10. RV's pace wasn't as fast as Dungey's.
