any 85 updates any time soon?

Edited Date/Time 6/26/2013 10:20am
Its been so long since any Japanese mfr. has updated an 85. I thought this was because 150's were coming, but that isnt happening. So these poor kids are riding 1999 tech bikes. I know the KTM is a newer design but it isnt dominant at all

Was just going to post that. An 85 with a aluminum perimeter frame is a beautiful thing. Screw Japan, they got their priorities messed up at the turn of the century. If I ever buy a new bike it will be European. Until then I will stick to my KX 2 strokes and support the industry by buying aftermarket instead of OEM.

That TM is so sick but if you tell mini dads about it they arent interested. these mini dads are saying that the CRF 150 is slow and kids dont want them. I find that hard to believe. they say these 10 year old Suzuki's are the best. Shit you not, I know of national level mini kids where their dads dont ever buy them a new bike, just used 08s and 09s

We rode'em all including the CRF150r and went with YZ's. Well, all except the TM or the '13 KTM. My kid hucks everything and rails all the corners on our track now I don't know that he needs anything more tech. Especially if it triples the cost. Right now the 85 class is the cheapest out there and a nice respite between the 50's and 250f's......................

Bingo!

The 08/09 RM & YZ 85's are a great base.....just keep doing the parts and motors.
The new KTM 85's are rockets but pricey.

What advancement would you have them make on the 85?
EFI....?
Does anyone want to spend $10K on a mini?

would we be cool riding bikes that were from 1999? hell no. riders buy a new 2013 bike and then spend 1000 on suspension and still complain about everything. can you imagine the best bike available being a 2002 YZ 426?

If we could still buy a brand new 90s bike there are some that I would definitely consider, I don't think things have gotten so much better since then.

Half the guys in here get excited by the scent of two-strokes, and think kids riding 85s rather than 150s would be an upgrade.

My son rides a pair of 07 CR85's just keep rebuilding them and they are fine.
I think thats one reason you dont see too many people switching over. The price to run an older RM, YZ or CR is dirt cheap compared to buying new KX's or KTM's and then building them up.
I bought one of his bikes for $800. That gives me $3200 to play with right off the start Vs. buying a new KX. He likes the feel of the Honda better then the Kawi and its alot cheaper to run them.

The lack of "evolution" or rather plastic upgrades/change seems like a good thing then? People buying a cheap bike, if kiddo having fun, build it up make it a weapon. All good it seems?

The KTM 85 did pretty well and won several championships in the spring nationals, especially in the younger class. That makes sense to me because a 13 year old who has ridden a KX or RM for several years would probably be more reluctant to switch to a totally different bike than a 10 year old.

It will be interesting to see what happens over the next few years with that bike.

That's exactly why I'm keeping my son on his CR125 until he can buy his own shit! Sure it's an 03, but I have a total of about $3500 into the bike and damn near looks and runs like a factory 125. Thank goodness he hasn't jumped on the 250f bandwagon yet.

And the JMS performance modded YZ bike is almost untouchable. (85 wise)

I hope not, my son hase 3 bikes that we can easily use for race and practice. Helps out tremendously that they have nor updated them. And we haven't met anything on the track we can't do yet.

This cheapness and affordability has allowed me to purchase him a YZ125 to start towards the next step. It has also let me purchase him a pit bike (KLX110L) so he doesn;t tear up his other bikes.

As for a new 13 KTM, they are pretty and fast. But for what it costs to buy a stock one, I can buy a 13 YZ 85, send the motor to JMS performance for a FULL national upgrade and still have money for a pipe and v force read cage. The Stock KTM cannot touch this motor and the YZ will turn circles around the KTM.

Now lets talk about service and upkeep

Clutch lever for YZ $5
for KTM $25

PIston kit for YZ $55 includes all gaskets.
for KTM $115

Now if you want to compare the SXS. I can buy to brand new YZs and still have change left over.

Riders make the bike, not the other way around. When I can get a new KTM for $3k out the door, we will buy one. Actually I am lying, I have enough 85s right now to last till he bumps up. Thanks for the lack of updates a reasonable price Yamaha!!!!

Shows how good this bike was when it first came out. Still going strong after 10 years.

In Holland almost everybody runs KTM's in the 85 and 125 class. There might be 1 or 2 guys per class that are running a restored bike but almost everybody rides a new. RESULTS

I grew up riding nothing but KX80s but my son wanted a KTM instead of a KX. I just about broke my heart but when I looked at the new 2013s I was impressed. I think the new ones are smaller, make more HP and with Excel wheels, hydraulic clutch, no linkage, etc. it was a no brainer, I bought him the KTM.
