The most obvious thing it needs is a better front fender, duh.

Navel Jelly on rusted parts work great. For non painted metals for polishing I use Nevr Dull.

Time consuming but you will like the end results.

The mentality that keeping up with the guy next door has brought to MX is just amazing. Unless it's been sitting with the plug out or he ran straight gas in it there nothing wrong with the engine. That bike, some nights in the garage and a few hundred dollars someone could have just as much fun as they would on a brand new $8,000 monthly payment. 95% of the riders at any given track would do no better on a brand new bike than they would on a well maintained 5 or even 10 year old bike. Would I show up at a race on a 2001 KTM125? Well, no. But don't do as I do, do as I say. Check ebay for any mechanical parts(non engine internal) you need, good used works just as well, see if you can find someone here that has a takeoff stock chain and and even sprocket. You can probably even find new plastic cheap on ebay or a local shop that has some old stock they're stuck with. Go to the hardware store and buy a $10 jar of oxyalic acid aka Wood Bleach, mix a little in a bucket of water and soak the rusty parts overnight, even the painted stuff. In the morning take a soft brass brush and knock off any rust that is left. Rinse it off, put it back together and ride it, sell it, whatever. You made a great buy.
I was the last to ride it 2 years ago and it was a good running bike... Doesn't need a clutch or a top end.... Just some new fluids and some TLC on the cosmetics. I'm gonna clean the carb put the chain and sprocket set on that I bought this morning and take a brillo pad and soap to this bad boy for some hrs and make my $900 lol

1) If the tank is full of crap, clean that out first so you don't do more damage.
2) Then put some gas in it and see if if runs.
3) If it does, replace the chain, and cables if they don't work, and go ride it!
4) If it doesn't run, clean out the carb, and repeat steps 2 and 3.

I am just in a similar task on a YZ 1999 (exactly WRZ) that I am making DV12 replica - it could be McGrath but I am french Smile (+ Peterhansel, with enduro plastics + supermoto wheels, which makes a $2000 bikes that can go to SX, MX, enduro, road, and road tracks!).

You must check every single parts. It can be a great Langston collector, (the first ktm to win, the first of many), $250 for the basis is ok because you will spend at least 500, more 1k to make it brand new and classy.

Words are missing as I am french, but start with bottom engine rings etc (300) for sure if you want to put any additional $ in it, piston kit (100) for sure to make it clean, pray that the nickasil is ok (if yes it is a good bike to rebuild, if not do not spend any $ and sell it for parts), check the gear box & cluch, check & change oil in suspensions, chain kit.

Once the bike is safe mechanically, then you can take time (to spend money & hours) but do not use it before, that would be the best way to break everything!

You made a killing on the YZ, I wish mine was such a bargain!

In all cases, collection is collection, it is a really funny way to spend a few evenings working or looking for cheap parts, and it keeps good values, just check the price of RM or CR from the 80's in perfect conditions ! Smile

Exactly:.

Split the track in 5.

Work to make each split as fast as you can, always check the time.

Make a super fast lap.

Then make a 30 minutes moto.

Calculate how much second you lost in total (in comparison to your super fast lap).

Conclusion: the bike is not the first problem Smile

Total initial investment on the KTM would be:

A can of carb clean spray.
A gallon of gas
A bottle of premix oil
An hour for cleaning the carb

If it did not make some noise, part it out.

All of the rubber seals in the brake system are probably dry rotted / weather checked. A set of crank seals would be advisable. Not to mention the intake / carb joint.

Any rust that has developed on internal engine parts such as crank bearings, rod bearings, and pins , will make for a short lived engine.

If any labor has to be paid for that can not be done at home, that bike will surely leave a huge hole in the wallet before it is a sanitary, reliable machine.

I could use a good before/after thread (calling Mr. Newmann!). Those are always my favorite.

Oh, and I couldn't agree more with RandyS. The shit some people on here do to their bikes is ridiculous.

Fired up first kick! Had me a beer or 6 while cleaning the carb and changing ALL fluids. She fired up first kick. We rode all day long! I may end up keeping this thing. I honestly didn't think it would turn out this good! I haven't done anything cosmetically to it. Didn't even change sprocket and chain just lubed the rusted one and got a wire brush and hammered down! Strong running bike! Will b even better when I put exhaust on it and chain and sprocket and tires (if keep it)

Oh and the 4 wheeler is a 04 Honda 450r... Smoked that damn thing in a drag 3 out of 4 BOOM!

Aaahhhhhh fun fun fun

Nice.

Save yourself some potential trouble and re-route that front brake line to the origninal position ASAP. From where it goes through the clamp on the lower fork protector, it should route between the fork leg and the wheel, not on the outside of the fork leg. That's a disaster waiting to happen.

You'll likely just have to take the front wheel off, unbolt the caliper and swap it around the other side of fork leg, then bolt it all back together.

I'm envious! Wish I could get my hands on something like that and for that sort of money. I'm not surprised it performs relatively well either, even back in those years KTM had a good 125. Glad it's worked out for you.

Im about to look up how to bleed brakes and go outside and bleed the brakes!! The thing has no rear brake. And the brake fluid to the rear brake looks like it has separated in the little canister deal that holds it. So i would take it thats whats wrong? It had a little brake and it faded to nothing with 2 hrs.

The front brake needs to be done too. It has a front brake but not as strong as it should be.

Such an awesome bike!
Not sure if you already wrote it somewhere in this thread, but How much did it cost you?

Everything under 800$ Would be ok in my opinion!

I paid $150 for the bike.... $30 in gas to go pick it up... $85 for chain and sprockets (havent installed yet) $19 for 5 gallons of gas... $5 for 2 cycle oil. $8 for a quart of bottom end oil!

soooo so far I have $303 in it.

The wife is out grocery shopping so I told her to pick me up some brake fluid so you can add whatever that is going to cost.

if you cant get your brakes to bleed they will most likely need a rebuild...the piston in the caliper gets corroded after sitting outside...

i would get some syringes and reverse bleed it..

Well I bled the brakes.... I have a little back brake now... And when you press the brake down slowly it gets stuck half way. I lubed up the brake pedal/lever (what ever fits ur fancy) where it bolts to the frame. So I'm thinking it is the master cylinder. I'm going to post a pic of the pads and you all can tell me if I need new pads.

reverse bleeding it pretty much garantees you have all the air out..then if it still wont work you know something needs replacing...

Ya that looks like a hella lot of work to bring up to scratch... Unless he's GIVING it away, I reckon you'd be able to find something better for not much

Yeh ill do that tonight. But why do you think the pedal is sticking half way down? Im going to take the master cylinder apart and clean it. seems like the spring in it is sticking or something.
