Two stroke tranny oil.

Edited Date/Time 3/25/2013 10:05am
Anyone have experience running 5wt motor oil and half ATF? I know digger29 uses this and seems to love it, I'm looking to run the best option for my 04 cr250r when the motor comes back together. I have always run specific gear oil in my two strokes, and not that I have had any problems, but I am looking to run something cheaper in the future do to the fact that I change the stuff all the time anyway. Open to hearing everyones thoughts and opinions.

Best option and cheap = oxymoron, T-Hud

Do you want the best oil? If not just use this...

It's cheap and you'll have to change it often.

Rotella T. Cheap. Pick it up at Wal-Mart. And works great. I run it in my KTM 150.

Normally I would agree 100% as I use it in my CRF, but in the Rotella thread CamP says he has problems with clutch slippage in his CR250 on Rotella. Something to think about...

I've used Rotella T 15-40 religiously in my 144SX, 150SX, 250SX, and 450SX-F and have had no clutch slippage at all. Prior to those I was riding blue bike, 2 and 4 strokes, and used Rotella and had no issues with those either.

.... I just recently picked up a 05 rm 250 play/ 2nd bike
last 2 stroke was a 01 cr250

I've been reading and experimenting w/ different gear oils

I was running this

and changing about every 2-3 rides and it seemed ok. But after I smoked/ burnt an almost new clutch pack at a local sand track w/ fresh oil. Plates were burnt, and 2 of the fibers were almost down to metal.

I switched to this is red like atf fluid?

way better, less slippage, cheaper = piece of mind (use to use on my '01 cr----- 0 problems)
--- I even bought some of their HP 4 stroke oil for my Zook

I've been using ATF for a long time. I change it every other ride (2-4 hrs)

I have heard that from quite a few engine guys as well, they say it will take anything you can throw at it and then some.....and it is $1.99 a bottle. The industry has duped lots of people into thinking you need "motorcycle oil" Tongue

Normally I would agree with you slip............when I worked down south I worked in the same building as a certain factory team......I watched them pour rotella t into all there race engines while their $20 a bottle synth oil sat on the shelf. So I know you don't have to run expensive oil in the tranny of a two stroke......just trying to hear what everyones choice was. What did you run in your smokers?

First of all a factory team is looking for 1 race performance not longevity so don't even consider what they do appropriate for non-throwaway type applications. Second synthetic oil being better than conventional oil in our applications is a myth, syn was developed for turbine engines. You riding a turbine powered bike? Run the Honda recommended oils or an equivalent, you will be more than fine. Why do so many want to make this so complicated?

When I was a kid my dad always ran ATF. Personally, my last few smokers('00-'04) I ran Golden Spetro.

The motors I build get Rotella unless a customer brings their own oil. What they do after the first oil change Is up to them, but the ones that stick with Rotella have never complained.

ATF is great, the only problem is, it has been known to eat plastic water pump gears.

Do the cr.'s have plastic water pump gears?

.

We have used the Lucas Oil Semi Synthetic 10W-40 along with 10% of the Heavy Duty Oil Stabilizer (HDOS) over the past 9 years with no problems.

A tip is to add 10% of the Heavy Duty Oil Stabilizer to the total refill capacity (90% oil / 10% HDOS) when doing your oil changes. If not comfortable using the 10w-40 there is a 20w-50 available or even the 15w-40 TBN Diesel oil too. The HDOS will not make your Clutch slip!

The “Synthetic Heavy Duty Oil Stabilizer” may cause some slipping if too much is used. (I experienced that during our 50cc days mixing / adding with full synthetic 5wt oils).

I've never been picky as it pertains to Crankcase oil. Castrol 10w-30 in the winter and 10w-40 in the summer for me, change it every 3-4 rides has always been a solid plan for me. I've messed around with a couple of different "recipes" my friends have fallen in love with, but I always go back to the simple alternative; My good ole' castrol'
