sold my CR450 last month and am using the money to put towards rebuilding my '01 YZ250 back to original condition. going to get the motor soda-blasted and try to get all new frame, swingarm, and subframes. not to mention all the other goodies i plan on putting on her.

my question is, what is the exact color match for the 2001 YZ's? it has a dark blue metallic finish, but i've seen re-paints that look horrible.

if anyone can point me in the right direction i would appreciate it.

also, for those of you that have restored bikes, do you guys try to get original oem stuff or aftermarket? i've had mixed results on pricing just looking into some of the parts i need to replace/upgrade.

I use OEM, unless the part's aftermarket equivalent is actually an upgrade in performance or quality.

I've had to look for OEM colors recently and was directed to Color-Rite. From what I can tell, these are the OEM colors. You can search any year and model and for MXers it gives you the plastic color and the frame color. I don't know who would paint their plastic, so that seems worthless. The frame swatches seem like they would be useful for your project.

The 01 YZ250 frame color pulls up Deep Purplish Blue Metallic C (DPBMC). The link at the bottom of this page shows a list of what other bikes the color was used on. It looks like the same color that was used on the frames up until 2005.

I don't have any experience with Color-Rite. I didn't buy the paint for my project, but from what I've heard the paint is pretty spot on with OEM if you follow the instructions for each paint. Some require a base paint to get the right color. But I've also heard it's pretty expensive. That's all I got. Good luck with the project.

Color Rite has a good match but yes it is expensive. The "base color" is only used for the tri coat (candy) finishes and not required on the YZ color. Let me check and see if I can cross reference to something your local paint supplier or body shop can mix for you. Or are you planning on spraying it yourself? Too bad the YZ250 and YZ250F subframes and airboxes don't interchange.....I have spares in ti and carbon.Smile

Strip the swingarm and leave a brushed finish on the aluminum like the factory bikes had.

Take a painted part to Home Depot, have them throw it in their color analyzer, then grab a roller and a couple of gallons and you're set!

You can thank me later.

Im not sure newmann...I do know they were powder coated not painted though.

I have never asked to get that specific color, but that might be an option for Peelout.

I just remember a lot of people getting their 4 stroke frames powdercoated and the oil reservoir in the frames getting filled with blasting abrasive!!Woohoo

Edit: Not that they had them done there.

i had powder-coat done on my 04 years ago and liked the turnout. however, i just went with a matte-gray finish. i would like to keep this color as close to original as possible...

regarding that air-box.... that thing is TRICK!

on a side note, just ordered a full FMF exhaust system for $324 shipped.... suck on those eggs 4-turd lovers

Since you are so far away from Olympic, they may just give you the powder type info and you could have a local shop do it.

Nice ride buddy! That looks great!

I've seen a few guys with YZs/RMs cut down their side number plates, or cut up, almost along the bottom of your number there, looks a little cleaner if you get it right...

No problem, I bought all new plastic on Rocky Mountain ATV a couple weeks ago using Acerbis. It looks just like the original and a good cost.

BILL, thanks for the heads up

Cool project! Im a body man by trade so Ive always used two stage automotive paint on my frames. Anyone with a paint machine can match Yamah blue metallic - or any other color without a code.

Do you have a build thread anywere?
