I was just reading the latest issue of MXP magazine ( Canada's RacerX...............Whistling ) and their senior writer, Marc Travers, made an interesting quote. In talking about Canada's former and future 'next big things' he wrote:

"I don't consider Dean Wilson a Canadian, obviously he doesn't either, but he did learn his race craft here, which I suppose counts for something, but I am not including him........"

Hhmmm, just makes me wonder. I know that Deano pissed a lot of Canadians off with his whole " I have no idea why my parents ever wanted to move there" comments, but for the TV commentator who calls the whole National Series to say a statement like that, kind of surprised me.

Maybe Deano could give a little more credit when its due........................

He did get to where he is today by all the help he got in Canada. He can't deny that.

What he said is perfectly reasonable. Dean did shat on Canada with his flip-flop.

Dean is a Scottish born kid who lived in Canada for a few years then moved to Cali. He parents moved to Calgary for the better standard of living b/c of the energy industry in Alberta. Most blue collar trades people pull 6 figures a year in Alberta. They own a house in Airdre, Alberta still. We would love to call him ours but we will have to share.....He visits Calgary once a year mostly, I spoke with him this summer at my shop in Calgary. He's always a cool kid.......
FYI, Traverse works for an Ontario based magazine, that is owned by the villianist CMRC, I'd suspect that there is no love there.
As the CMRC is the real and only reason why Canada does not send a competitive team to the MXDN....

Dean was born in Scotland and lived there for at least 7 years according to his website. Pretty sure you dont have any right to call him Canadian what so ever based on that. Just because he lived in Canada for a while and learnt to ride there doesnt make him Canadian.

Does America claim Chad Reed as an american? No of course not so how can Canada claim Wilson as a canadian.

I wouldn't put too much stock in what you read in that magazine. It and the people behind it are a liability to the sport in Canada.

I apologize for being Canadian too, and having an opinion.

Hey, I love Travers and Gauldy, they do an incredible job calling the Canadian races, Travers is the best announcer since Larry Huffman. Travers works like a dog at the races and TV production.

Wilson can not deny his time here, and what a good life Canada provided for him and his family.

My Dad was born in Ireland, moved here when he was 10, and died a Canadian. In my humble opinion, Canada is a great country and deserves praise.

I think the biggest problem is that Wilson professionally is too good for Canada. He would kill it in our series, and our lack of MXdN $ and commitment frustrated him, and he turned his back on Canadian MX, maybe rightly so. That being said, Scotland isn't exactly killing it, but the British MX series trumps ours.

I respect Travers commitment to MX too much to criticize him. I think it is just that us Canadian's want to claim such a great rider for ourselves, or at least the majority of him, and are frustrated we can't seem to "get a date" with him. How cool would it be to see a Canadian win a big US race!!?

Wardy didn't have to abandon the US for Scotland because MX wise, the US offered too much. Wilson can't say the same about us and our series.

Travers, and Wilson, both rock.

Can't blaim the Wilsons, if I lived in Scotland i'd move too, Canada is a great place.

He should have stayed riding for Canada, he never talks about Britain anyway, it's always about riding for Scotland.

Sorry, I love Canada, but there's no legitimate claim on Deano. Soon his time in the U.S. will eclipse that of Canada, but that won't make him American.

Exactly. He sure felt Canadian when he wasn't good enough to get picked for GB. That's my biggest gripe with the whole thing. Don't go representing the Country and say your not Canadian.

I hope none of you Americans stating Canada has no right to claim Wilson are not those that claim Mexicans, or any other immigrants, are required to forgo their background and assimilate completely into the US culture.

I'm not sure why so many Canadians are torqued about Deano saying he's not Canadian. He's not a Canadian citizen. I'm quite sure he enjoyed and appreciated his time here, but to progress to the level he is at now, he and his parents understood they had no choice but to move south.

So what's the issue? We were lucky to have him for a while, and I will always consider him an adopted son of Canadian MX. He learned and practiced his race craft here until he topped out and needed to find more challenges.

Being a Canadian of Scottish decent, I'll always be a fan!

You have a point Kosmo. Mostly the one on top of your HEAD, but whatever.
Wilson isn't Canadian, never has been and never will be. He left with his family to move up the ladder in the sport. He certainly wasn't going to go anywhere by staying here. It was a great move for him. Having said that, if he's denying his time here was part of his success, he's fooling himself. Bitter taste in his mouth perhaps.
As I always say, if you don't like it here, don't hang around trash talking the place. Just get the fuck out. He didn't hurt my feelings any. I'm born and bred Canadian, from English and Austrian parents, with a Scottish grandmother. Doesn't make me a soccer playin liederhosen wearin warm beer drinking sheep fucker.

Mark Travers a journalist ? now thats funny !

MXP magazine is the puppet with strings to Mark Stallybrass, you insult the ethics of Racer X magazine to compare them.
Deano's antics ( racing for 3 different countries) is the same as any pro athlete that gets traded from city to city and just keeps saying he's part of the team.
loyalty is only as good as the offer lasts.

Don't even try to compare MXP to Racer X Canada.

That's just stupid.

I can't state it as fact but I was fairly certain Dean became a Canadian Citizen.
