Front Flip To Debut At X Games!

July 28, 2008, 4:07 PM

Broseph, this entire X Games thing is getting a bit out of control right about now. So, it turns out that Travis Pastrana is OUT of Best Trick and guess who's taking his place? Ya, his Rally co-driver, Jim DeChamp. Seems as if Jim DeChamp, who is a former BMX rider from what I understand, has been practicing the front flip into the foam pit and has it dialed. Don't believe me? Better make sure your TV is equipped to handle all the live goodness that will be coming from LA this week. Is it weird that I'm scared?

Not this front-flip..

I figured TP had the front flip in his pocket. Why is he out now?

It's official, Jim DeChamp is in for Best Trick at X Games 14 and he'll be pulling a front flip. Man, the progression the sport has seen in the past couple weeks is extraordinary.

Not sure. Maybe he didn't have it and didn't want to go against his co-driver? Or just wanted his co-driver to get the spotlight this year?

He wanted Jim to be in the spotlight from what I understand

Freestyle is a dying sport.
It will stop for good when someone dies on national television I imagine.

Have you seen the crowds at these things? While they used to pack the house... now - not so much. Usually the crowds are much smaller these days.

Travis was going to try a backflip 360 no handed like he did on the Evil tribute but pulled out so Jim could have center stage this year. What other guy would pull out of a contest so his buddy could win? Travis is one of a kind.

people have died live at nascar and its still growing. i dont like nascar or fmx, but a lot of people do. fmx seems to be the most popular discipline at xgames and competitions like that.

fmx guys are good at what they do. you have to give them credit for that. they have skills on a bike.

Landing in the foam pit is far from having the trick down and landing on dirt .

You can not compare Nascar to FMX. lol

Note: I'm not a fan of Nascar & I'll watch FMX if I'm bored in front of my TV just to listen to the 2 strokes.

I know KTMboy is fishing, but FMX is far from dead. It's the premier "sport" at X games. Not even the AMA could kill FMX right now.

If Travis was riding, I'd make it a point to watch live.

If I was a privateer, I'd have a foam pit to survive and pay the bills. These dudes have to be making good GUARANTEED money.

This is what I'm excited about. And it's the only thing that's potentially bigger than any of the MX events. Last event sunday:

I think freestyle is a little boring but you can't say events like the Red Bull X fighters are a flop. The Navy X did not have a crowd because they forgot to advertise the event.

still it's good, but you're right. He almost looked as if he was slightly kicked out when he landed. do that on dirt and wipe out.

Yep, and they stay collapsed even in the air. It would be interesting to learn exactly how he has the bike set up both front and rear.

Here's the next photo of the sequence of Jason's front flip that my wife took at Crandon,WI on June 1. Jason was in the Vet A, I was in Vet B 2 gates to his left. We had a double gate drop and my wife was taking pictures of us that day. The race was restarted because the gate didn't fall all the way. Jason got back up, took the holeshot and won the moto.

Sweet pic. They do make full length hand guards to protect you in that situation..

Is there something funky going on with those front forks?

They are setup with about two inches of travel. No rebounding fork, no force pushing the opposite direction you want to go.

let's face it...the reason many of us watch these types of events is because of the gnarly crash factor and carnage that may ensue in one of these competitions.

It is supercool to see some "supercool" stuff but man.

sad to say but that is the truth is it not?

To paraphrase the Evel one.

"Half the folks that come out are here to see me make it and the other half come to see me crash but all of 'em paid to get in."

Heck I have been doing front flips for years. From what people saw they said that was awesome and I should do it again. "As soon as I can walk again, as soon as I can walk."

Anyone here ever done the front flip over the bars to your feet? Bike get caught in a rut and just sits there? Those are fun.

he also said, 50% want to see you make it. 49% want to see you crash. 1% want to see you die. Those are the truely sick ones.

EXACTLY! Just like in 70's. People did not go watch Evel to see him jump. They went to see how bad he was going to crash! Which he did about 7/10 jumps.
