If you don't want to watch 20 of the best in the world of each class race together in an all star moto, then you musn't be a fan of mx racing...I don't see why, from a fans persective it shouldn't be good.. you still get the seperate classes racing in two other motos.

I think people should at least give it a chance. It has been done in other series, I guess Kongols hates the UK Red bull series and the British Championship and the Irish Championship too for having combined races.

This isn't a new thing, and it is good to watch, and it It should be even better at a GP because of the depth of talent in the race. It really it is the best of both worlds. The quality of rider will be incredible right through the field! If it doesn't work they can go back to the old format in 2015, no big deal.
There is a massive talent drop from from mx1 to mx2. Other than Herlings, the rest of the mx2 class will struggle to make the top 10. So the cameras wont be showing much of the mx2 guys, and hence we are missing out on more racing.

They better fucking charge us less on mxlife for those races.

The mixed class does have some big positives and negatives.

But you really do have to think what it will do for the MX2 riders and teams

I am certainly interested to see how it works out, but as you said yourself Geoff, most people watch the top ten riders, and the TV cameras also follow the top ten riders.

What happens when the sponsors of the MX2 teams realize that their riders are generally not in the top ten and getting no TV, do they start pulling their money and the sport is back in the same situation with 20 rider gate with the MX1 and MX2 combined?

Also what happens when there is a battle up front with two MX1 riders going for the race win for their class, while ten seconds back the top two MX2 riders are locked in battle, which battle gets the coverage.

Then again with the racing being shown online, I guess instead of just having one stream they could have two or even three simultaneous streams going, one focusing on MX1 and the other on MX2, now that would be cool and could help ensure coverage for both MX1 and MX2 riders.

Imagine a big screen or two screen at home with both streams running side by side!

The thought of seeing some of the worlds best riders racing no matter what size bike is great, but will the negatives out weight the positives, I guess the only way to find out is to try.

On another note Geoff, are you planning on making it to a few rounds of the Australian MX Nationals while you are over here.

Well, at least there won't be a load of goons riding round like at mexico last year. That race still makes me shudder to this day.

What does that have to do with anything?

Perhaps you are promoting the online mag now with the new account, which I enjoy very much.

Good interview with Herlings. Looks like he will be on a Pro Circuit 250f for the US mx series in 2014.

Did you already think about teams like JM Racing, UK KTM, ...? Those teams have good riders but not the top riders. In the combined races those riders are going to battle for +/- 20 place and there sponsors won't be happy with that. Thats a fact!

There is one big talent in the MX2 class thats Herlings and that kid is maybe capable of running with the big guns on a bike that is 200cc underpowered. Other guys like Nicholls, Anstie, Kullas ... are screwed!

Think about this Tonus is riding 7th - De Dycker 6th and Herlings 5th (first MX2 guy) - then it is possible that De Dycker screws around with Tonus because he wanna project his KTM mate... SHIT LIKE THAT WILL HAPPEN!!

And the riders aren't happy either look at this:

And this:
This is totally a photoshop. Geof said that all the riders are excited like small children on a Cristmas morning and are jumping up and down as we speak.

I said the riders I spoke to. I didn''t speak to ALL the riders.........Speaking to more today. Like always I will be the only fan/scribe who does that.....The riders who complain above are the riders who might miss out, riders on the fring of the top 20. I can imagine they are disappointed.

What does Davey do these days? And Pedro Tragter for that matter?

Check out this video I just stumbled upon! The first few minutes are great from a 2-stroke sound point of view, but the video gets a little it more interesting around 3 minute mark. I wish the tracks were still like this and started out with grass underneath.

Ever looked at the outdoor nationals Geoff?

Organizing GPs in Mexico/Brasil/Thailand is the most stupid idea ever in these times of economic turndown unless YS would support every team (the small teams too!) to get there. Combining the MX2 and MX1... really?

I don't think old school and new school values are inherently at odds. What sort of tracks and how racing is formatted often reflect management values and objectives rather than any tension between old and new school "values" or qualities.

There are for sure a lot of old school features that thankfully are long gone (dust for one), and some that are sadly, but necessarily past their time, but not everything.

I watch the Nationals on tv, they look awesome. I love them. Used to go to two or three a year for about 25 years but got sick of the travel. Visited my first one in 1978 and then a lot after that until around 2005. I love the AMA circuits, but those circuits are made and cared for by families who treat their circuits like a newborn.

The two series are so different they could nearly be different sports, but both versions have awesome riders and special circuits.

If the small teams are struggling so much wouldn't the combined race make it easier for them? They don't have to go to the overseas races and they don't have riders running inside the top 15 anyway, so what is the problem??

The still get 14 GPs in the year and enough exposure for their sponsors.

It is nothing new that small teams struggle to make money from MX. Its been like day since day one in the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s.

People just argue to argue sometimes.

At least we can always count on you to be positive about it Geoff Smile

I always try to stay objective when looking at changes, I see some positives and negatives to the change, but looking forward to seeing how it plays out.

Going to be interesting here in Australia as well next year, heading back to the traditional formats, well of sorts, two motos per class, will be interesting to see how it affects crowd numbers in a couple of years time, not that our crowds are huge but at least visually they have looked larger the past couple of years.

One thing I certainly agree with that you said, I to am looking forward to Ferris charging through the 450s in the combined overseas races this year.

I get blamed for being too positive, not just here on forums, but in life in general. Of course there are negatives in anything, and I wouldn't like to be the 15th to 20th MX2 rider, knowing you expected to possible improve your race positions in 2013 and now coming into reality that you are going to get roosted and pushed around by the MX1 guys, but the positive is not about the riders, it's about the people watching. Those are the ones we need to keep happy, not the riders. Sounds harsh, but it is reality and any smart businessman would look to keep his paying customers happy. Riders and teams are involved because they love the thrill, one moto, two motos, the thrill stays the same.

I think Dean (Ferris) has potential to be a top three guy in 2013. He reminds me a lot of Chad and Andrew when they first came here.

'it's about the people watching. Those are the ones we need to keep happy, not the riders.'

That line right there pretty much sums up everything that is wrong with todays MXGP racing. Don't get me wrong, Luongo doesn't give a rats ass about the people watching, but he damn well cares even less about the riders participating!

The riders being happy, and being able to attend all the races and make a living at it, should be the top priority for Youthstream.
When the riders aren't happy, or aren't able to afford to go to every races and make a living racing their bike, the sport falls down in every aspect: TV, spectators, sponsors, tracks, you name it. It's as simple as that.

They are the ones risking their lives every weekend at the hands of some greedy chub that couldn't tell the difference between a dirtbike and a christmas tree, all while he's trying to make GP motocross into some kind of elite sport that IT WILL NEVER BE.

Luongo's system is broken, and the only reason this circus keeps going is because he throws some fish at the top teams now and again to keep them from pulling the plug. He doesn't even care about a team like DIGA that had a podium contender like Butron for christs sake.

No matter how you slice it, a combined race can't give as much coverage as two separate races. MX2 guys who were in 'X' position and earned 'Y' coverage before will now be further back and get less coverage. That's indisputable.

Less coverage = less value for sponsors and teams. Less value = less $$ for the teams and riders. Less $ = more teams folding and less riders.

Geoff's already told us that he doesn't care about riders outside of the top ten. At least with separate races there were two top 10s for him to care about.

That's how I see it. It's not saving the manufacturers any money, and its not getting them anymore coverage. The only people this will benefit are the Red Bull KTM sponsors.

Mate, the risking their lives doesn't cut it with me. Riders race because they love it, nobody is putting a gun to their head. 18 rounds instead of 16 and races in cool places like Thailand and Qatar doesn't sounds broken to me.

some what poor wording, neither qatar nor thailand are cool, in fact they both very hot places, and are hitting thailand smack in the middle of the hot season.........38c+ (100+) and very very humid, thats gonna waste many riders coming out of a euro winter.

and the thai race will have issues.

eg thailand hosted the footsal world cup (indoor soccer), they built a purpose built stadium that fifa canned cause it wasn't up to standard and had safety issues.

sounds great on paper but.......well maybe the euro guy can pull it together, i do hope so

That is the exact opposite of what they say in NASCAR. Mike Helton, president of NASCAR, will tell everyone the most important thing in the sport is to keep the 43 teams happy. If the teams and drivers are happy, they will make every race and give it 100%. The fans will show up wherever those 43 teams race. YS needs to focus more on the teams and riders and try to stop the exodus of GP champions to the USA.

your statement is smacked with patriotism

EMX= European championship 125 & 250 small teams and privateers (semi-professionals)
GP= World championship 250 & 450 Factory teams (full-professionals)

No one left behind but Don't try to punch above your weight
