I got rid of my 450 to get an older 250t........best choice i ever made,.....at least for the fun factor, and for me thats what it is all about. Wink

Yes, out here in Southern California you see a lot of two-strokes..last week when I was out at milestone there were about the same number of two strokes as four strokes.

Sold my 4t and bought a 250sx. More cost effective and in my eyes going to be a lot more fun. I am not nearly as competitive as I once was so I felt it was time to go back to my roots.

I can't imagine why someone would choose a CR80 over an XR80?

Interesting stats from the Virginia Championship Hare Scramble Series (VCHSS) - 2 strokes in offroad are very dominate. Here are our numbers for the 2012 season that just finished. We track the brands and types of motors and feed them back to the factories, AMA and series sponsors:

Average rider turnout per event ~400 (bikes only) over 15 rounds:

2-Stroke - 70%
4-Stroke - 30%

By Brand and percentage of brand entered on average per event:

KTM - 45%
Yamaha - 23%
Honda - 11%
Kawasaki - 8%
Suzuki - 7%
Gas Gas - 3%
Husqvarna - 2%
Husaberg - 1%

Seeing the ride of the of the 4-Stroke the numbers continue to decrease here. What brands are the biggest sellers? Those that have 2-Strokes in the lineup particularly in a full size bike. 10 years ago Honda was the most raced bike in Virginia holding down about 30% of the bikes raced. Now it is #3 and still decreasing. The interesting thing we see is the surge off smaller brands out of Europe. Just a few years ago they made up collectivlye 3% of the bikes. Now there are enough that they can be counted on their own and are rivaling the numbers of Kawsaki and Suzuki. 2-Strokes make the sport more affordable especially when they detonate...enough said...

There has definitely been more 2 strokes where I ride. Its funny, I get more people in the pits asking me about my bike these days. Everything I hear is always.

1. Man its good to hear a 2 stroke.
2. How much did you pay for it?
3. Man I miss my 2 stroke...

Also, age group racing is a big deal now, so you can big bore a YZ or SX 250 and be very competitive with 450.

4 strokes are a loser in every category (weight, centre of mass, rotating inertia etc) except one: traction. The every other revolution power stroke allows the tire to hook up. You would think this is an advantage in hare scrambles with the hill climbs. However, the higher centre of mass means more effort every time you move the handlebars. Also, the high compression, big carb/tbi, high lift cams are prone to stalling all the fukin time.

Except on greasy uphill with exposed roots and rocks. My KTM 450 used to break traction where my current 300 goes up like butter. My theory is that with the big 450 you get kind of a pulsing power. 1 big bang that gets the wheel loose. On a MX track it doesn't matter because you regain traction on the non power stroke, but in offroad it sure does.
I'm not kidding, in sketchy traction conditions I went from a hack to superman.

So the tire regains traction in the non-power stroke, but don't four-strokes rev quit a bit higher than two-strokes? Wouldn't this almost negate the difference between the continuous power stroke and the every other power stroke? Not completely, but doesn't it make the two more similar?

im an old guy -44. raced and rode fom 4 to 20. didnt ride for ten tears. at 30 bought a yz 250 2 stroke. had fun but the bike wore me out in 5 min. hardly rode it. at 34 bought a 250f. loved it. aloowed me to ride without getting so fn tired. or scaring the shit outa me. so the 4 stroke has been good to me. that being said im riding and racin more now then ever. bought a yz250 2st to go along with my 250 and 450fs. loved it. sold it awhile back. gonna get a 150 when i can afford it. moral of story i love dirt bikes and there is a place for both.

Actually quite the opposite....a 2stroke has more "instantaneous torque" than a 4stroke. Typically a 2stroke has a higher spike in torque when it fires...a 4stroke torque spike is less than a 2stroke which gives you a smoother power delivery.

The Japanese companies IMO are too conservative. They don't really make any bikes I want to buy. If you take the plastic off all the Japanese 450/250s, I cant tell them apart.

I will give Honda credit though. They are making some inexpensive models for 2013 to try and get new riders into the sport of motorcycling.

if you see someone one a 2-stroke at the track, they probably lost their job or took a massive pay cut but figured they could still afford to ride a smoker.

250 2-strokes are the most economical race bikes out there IMO...

the new ktm250sx is nicee!!

Just bought a yz250 and selling the heavy 450. Spent all day riding it yesterday.....and guess what? No broken stuff! No electronics, no cams, no valves and half the clean up time! In love already!

its funny i never had a problem going fast on my 250 when i was young and in shape.... so i guess the counter argument for 4 strokes is now that im old and fat i ride the bike that destroyed the whole most physicaly demanding sport theory?!

Old boy, our stories are almost identical. Except I bought a SX125 two years ago and couldn't be happier.

Go and get that 150!! You will love it!

I still think about adding a 250 two stroke to the garage next to my 450. I love my four stroke and haven't had the slightest problem with it to this point. In two years time, I have spent much less $$ on my four stroke than I would if I had a two stroke for the same time frame. Because of the two different power deliveries, I'd be a little nervous about practicing or racing the two bikes on the same day though. Anyone else switch back and forth on the same day??

I bought a RM 250 this spring after 4 strokes for years, let me say it took a bit of getting used to at first but now I am way faster than I ever was at any point in my riding life, I am 40 now and probably concidered b class ability and the last time I remember being as fast was when I was 25 with a new YZ250.

Yeah, this is me somewhat. Love the two strokes and feel faster on them (probably not though) but I get so tired on them compared to four stroke...and I don't know about that traction thing...the two stroke scares the hell out of me when the track is hard and wet.

What are the rules in the US regarding what class a 250 2 stroke runs in. I know the pro rules are 250 2T vs 450 4T and the amateurs are cc vs cc but it seems every time someone mentions getting a 250 2T they say they have to race 450's. Do any tracks actually follow the amateur rules or do they follow pro rules.

Over here its easy, we have one rule for everyone and the clubs have to follow them.
