1) I find it hard to feel bad for people that get so snared and trapped in drugs. There was a time when those people did not do drugs. They started on thier own will. 2) Can it be good for an rehabbed ex-pro ( Mike ) to be teaching motocross schools while carrying around two packs of smokes and chain smoking through an interview? Not a really good example to be setting to young kids. ( I know, I know, its only cigs, but thats my opinion............flame away)

Overall, I felt after the article that Healey is just a guy that still doesn't really give a f#@k and wants people to feel sorry for him. I don't.

The day I shattered my leg, an addiction to painkillers was in my future. Through 3 surgeries & a year of rehab, Norco became pretty much my best friend. The addiction is not all in the head, flue like symptoms, cold sweats, an absolute shit feeling would come everytime I went off (& I was only taking 1 pill a day). Trying to get off them while working 40 to 50 hours per week felt virtually impossible. Finally got off by switching to anti-axiety medication for a week, but my leg still wasn't recovered, constant swelling & pressure in my calf persisted. I self-medicated for another 3 years with some lower grade pain killers ordered through the internet. Finally kicked it on my own, now feel guilty even taking an Excedrin or Asprin.

Statements like yours are extremely short sided. I don't imagine anybody really wants to be hooked. In my case, my pride stood in the way of letting anybody know the problem, my wife, brother & parents have no clue what I was dealing with. Acceptance, guidance & help would go way further than just slamming people. This is only regarding the addiction, not all the other BS he's done. It's completely possible for addicts to function in everyday society with nobody being the wiser, blaming drugs for other actions is giving a person an excuse for a lack of morality - they shouldn't be able to blame it on the drugs.

One thing I can guarantee, the use of opiates must be widespread in the sport of motocross. It's tough to get off after an injury. If you compound that with other injuries down the road while still recovering from the first, there is a constant reason to justify there existence.
This^^^. unless you've taken them you won't understand why they are taken. It's easy to sit there and judge everyone without knowing what you are talking about.

I stand by what I said. He told me the stories multiple times on the mornings after I forced him to stay the night at my place, because he was so jacked up he would fall asleep mid sentence while talking to me. You aren't responsible for things he has done since, but you certainly did start him down that path.

BTW, May 2009 to now is actually 3 years 5 months, not 5 years.

I'd bet that crashnburn11 would not say that to Mike's face. That would be fun to watch for about 15 seconds. Pretty big accusations there, crash...

Mike used to not want me sleeping in my van at the Nat's, and he was sponsored by Red Roof Inns at the time, so he always insisted that I sleep in his room. He also gave me parts that I couldn't afford for my Suzuki. I'll never forget how a superstar like Mike Healy was so god damn cool to me. And yes, if you were a struggling privateer, Mike was as much of a superstar as Jeremy, but it doesn't surprise me that most people on here don't think so.

I'm not saying that because we are buds. I haven't talked to him or seen him in ten years or so. I had never hung out with him before, either. He just helped me out because he's a nice guy. I hope that's the Mike Healy that prevails...

Hey Mike I remember in 1978 at the World Mini you got 2nd behind my brother Ty at Escape Country. And when were were driving out you yelled "you got lucky". Haha. I also remember when we were in the worst movie ever made Winners Take All! I remember that one scene where they told us to just cruise and you took off and were gone way out front! Also remember the Cagiva days with that one guy Moreili or whatever his name was. He could make those things haul! Even if he didn't speak english! Anyway I am glad to hear you are doing better! Keep it up!

i read most of the posts on here.
I lost my brother in '06 being 6 years older than me to heroin.
He just got out of prison for petty stuff,theft what not .Yes he would only hurt his family and himself througout the years.
It sucked.He used to race motorcycles and pit crew for our uncle drag racing in So.Cal.in he late '70's early '80's.
He got out in '06 and came to my house.I helped him before several times taking him in over the years as did other family members.I have a small family.

I bought him a bus ticket to LA where he was accustomed too and gave him money and clothes.3 days later a cop comes knocking on my door.My mom and grandma were here visiting.It was Christmas time.He OD'ed in a Chino Hills motel.I never felt more guilty in my life.Still do.

I also had a problem with pain killers(norco).That is done with for 5 years now.

I knew Mike back in the early '90's racing the GFI series and I believe he was racing in Europe at the time as well.Cool cat.

My point is don't judge and lend a helping hand.

Wish I did more for my brother.I did try.

Addiction is not friendly no matter what it is.

I remember Mike riding international races in France, throwing big whips everywhere, or converting a uhill followed by a downhill 30 meters away in one HUGE tableptop. I'm a big fan since then. Big respect for taking the right road again. Always be a fan, and i'm not the only one in France to remember you very well.

I've been to funerals for my neighbors 31 year old son who was a really bright individual who got hook on pain pills while in college and also for a friend of mines wife who had three great looking kids who would find her unconscious on numerous occasions before she finally did it one too many times. Good people who end up not being in control of what's right. I could name a dozen people who have either died or have cost their families hundreds of thousands of dollars fighting the doctor prescribed addictions. It's up to him and no one else at this point. I wish him all the best.

a couple serious injuries in a row is all it takes for some ppl. I had norco's prescribed to me for a over year due to a nasty clavicle break and then a grenaded wrist. One day i woke up and realized i was STRUNG OUT...... I decided to use Marijuana as a pain relief before PT or if i couldnt sleep
