Washougal - Chuck Sun Jump

Stuck at work, thinkin about motor-cross stuffz. Does anyone have the video of Chuck Sun looping out over the jump that would eventually be named after him? What about videos from '03ish with Reed and Bubba styling over the Sun jump?

I'm still bitter that they took out that whole section. That whole new vendor section hardly gets utilized. I think they had a big MotoConcepts tent, a few food stands, and the Air Guard tent. That was it. Not worth it.

That jump rewarded me well. I miss it for sure, one of the more photogenic spots on the series.

It really was. My first time to Washougal was '07, and I was too slow to jump it. Now when I go, not that I'm that much faster, it bums me out that it's not there anymore. Really cool section of that track.

Last time I raced there it was the roughest section of track leading up to it from the catcher's mit, made a lot of passes there that weekend. Sucks it's gone!

I was in the infield and watched him bail that day, he was charging just a little too hard there unfortunately..

Everyone misses that section of track. At least they've opened up the top and, with a hike, given us die-hards a new section. We use to meet in the, empty, catcher's mitt corner beer garden at noon Sat. pro practice. Yearly tradition. T'was fun cause we couldn't see the pack until they came skying off the jump then pitch it into the corner right in front of our salivating group.



(Wish I would've used 'sport' mode on the digi. TOE set me up in 'M' mode and I was (still am) unable to manipulate focus, let alone everything else... hehe.) FTE is right about opportunity though. Wish he'd share some more.

Here's one I took of Magoo from 83 railing same corner.



Check out the erosion factor from 25 years of moto. Track lost a good 2 to 3 feet of top soil.

It is so amazing how deep that track has been cut. Almost unrecognizable compared to that '83 picture. I wish they'd truck in some sand, or something.

It seems simple to me. Go out where everybody parks there cars for the national. Take the top 1-2' of top-soil from there and dumptruck it over to the track...wham-mo...instant fresh racing surface! None of this bullshit woodchip sand mixture shipped in from somewhere far away, thus adding to shipping/transport costs.

Hell, it could be a one man job that could last a couple months during the winter. Dude drives the dumptruck to the big grassy area, hops out of it and onto a giant frontend loader, loads the truck with fresh topsoil, then drives it over and dumps it on the track. Every once in awhile smooth out your work and plant a little pasture grass in the parking lot.

Seems damn simple to me.

Damn, I think of the Chuck Sun jump all the time. It was the weirdest jump ever, and anyone that used to race Washougal when it was there knows what i'm talking about. It wasn't a big jump or a hard jump, but it is the only jump I have ever hit that gave you a zero gravity feeling. I never could figure out why, but when you were in the air (which was not that high) you had this overwhelming feeling of weightlessness. I'm not sure if it was because you pre-jumped from 1/2 way up the face sometimes or the way the ground went away on the downside, but no other jump has ever giving me that feeling. What's crazy is, even if they tried to rebuild it I doubt they could ever replicate it.

Did anyone else get that feeling jumping it?

justin I jumped it on my 85 Smile

the jump was cool but I really enjoyed the rollers out of catchersmit and leeches lump or whatever it is called is angled just right so you basically had to scrub it before the scrub was even invented. theres a poster of a stewart gettin nasty on that thing his rookie year.

Haha I'm sure you did playa. I never even rode 80's :/ first time there I was full on begooner, and it was rutted as hell too. Did like 11 laps all day.

It really wasn't that bad of a crash,IMO......we see far worse these days just in SX.
Over jumped it/throttle stuck.

he coulda saved that I think even with that suspension. but the feeling in your stomach when your throttle malfunctions on the face of a jump cant be put into words

p.s. justin I luv ya buddy I wasn't tryin to be a dick Smile I ALWAYS got smoked there, i think the best I got was like a 4th or 5th in the supermini class on amatuer days

Ahh.....the old Chuck sun Jump. Used to love that track from about 2002 and earlier.....now days not so much. Couple older racing pics of mine when I used to enjoy the track.

We rented 'shougie a couple times and it helped get the speed up (in its normal direction). It's pretty intimidating your first time there.

My first time, they ran the track backwards. Trying to downslope the Chuck Sun takeoff was precarious at best. To say nothing about the flat lander the ski jump gave you if you launched it. Horsepower hill was a blast once I nutted up and started flying a ways down that steep sucker then clicking 5th. Wore out my brake shoes that day... hehe!

Dan is right about that jump. The harder you hit it, the funner it was.

NO!!!!!

It's good it is slick, the riders have a hard enough time adapting to anything but perfect moist loam...

Let em ride a hard pack slick technical track every once in while...

What they need to do is get the sand they've added to half the tracks on the circuit and dump it all at southwick so it gets deep again!

I've been saying that for years about adding dirt. .. Change isn't always a good thing I miss the Chuck Sun Jump and the Catcher's Mitt. The fairly new uphill road jump is pretty badass. I'm sure a lot of you guys remember when the whoops at were like 3 feet tall and peaky at the national- that was awesome back in the day watching RJ, Wardy, Johnny O, Bailey and those legendary jump through them.
