I think if it was Mike Alessi that made the mistakes people in the industry would forgive it, but when it's your dad that's yelling at Mitch that he and his team are cheaters, he's taking factory suspension to a local shop to have it taken apart, etc etc it's an entirely different thing.

IMO, not necessarily Alessi's

This slam 800 for nothing crap is getting old, I guess folks with tiny peckers and no life have nothing else better to do? Mike kicked ass this year, stayed healthy and was faster at the end of the season. Awesome accomplishment! Mike is the only one to step up and make it a show this year, Mike and Tony kicked ass. Tony should have gotten some airtime, the dude is a moto celeb, did they ever interview him on TV? Props to MC for surrounding the Alessi's with great folks.

How does it baffle you?!?!

There are x amount of factory rides... And more riders that deserve the spot than x... And there are loads of riders who have way better PR skills or upside than Mike...

Weimer is perfect example... at the mid point of the season he was neck and neck with Mike in points and just hit the deck a few times, but he is a great interview and has a good rep... PC signed him, Kawi signs him and now resigns him... Andrew Short is the same... Nick Wey consistently gets great support cause he is probably the best rider in the sport with interviews... He's made great money his whole career because of how good he is with the fans and media...
Really? I'm going with Bobby on this one......."afuckingmazing!"

Mike's podium interviews were definitely a breath of fresh air this year without all the canned bullshit sponsor interviews. The kid spoke from his heart and answered the questions directed at him, which I wish most riders would do. Alot of the riders never seem to answer the questions asked to them and in more of a hurry to jump right to their sponsors.

It still baffles me that Alessi doesn't have some sort of factory assistance.

I think his best decision came when he decided to put his entire effort into last season's SX rather than partially saving himself for the outdoors.

He's definitely made some positive changes this summer and is the only rider I can think of that was able to make all of the races in the 2012 SX AND MX seasons. . . That's saying a LOT. Adds to the confusion of why he is without factory parts.

You are kidding aren't you!?!?!

He has clearly been brought up in a trailer and his answers are preselected from the same old piece of a4 paper he's been reading off since he turned pro... In fact the only scribbles on it have been the rewrites Tony has added to avoid anything about killswitches and boasting when he shouldn't...

Worst interview in the sport...
Are you trolling? His interviews have been great all Summer! WTF have you been watching?

Here are the reasons why Alessi does NOT deserve to go.

1. Speed. Alessi just doesn't have the speed of the top 250 riders. Like Roger said, Baggett and company were running faster lap times on their 250s. And I'm tired of hearing that he deserves to go because he is second in a depleted 450 class. You see I'm one of those crazy people that believes the riders should be picked based on how good they are, not what cc bike they ride.

2. Sand. Alessi isn't the greatest rider in the sand and everyone knows it. Barcia, however, is known to be a great sand rider. And don't try to bring up this years Southwick race to try to disprove this. Everyone has bad races and bad luck, it happens. Let's not forget he won Southwick last year in the 450 class. Speaking of Barcia on the 450, he regularly beat Alessi last year on that bike and ran with RV and RD some.

3. Support. Alessi cannot possibly get the support from Motoconcepts that Barcia will get from Factory Honda. In that deep Lommel sand I want our guys on the best bike possible.

For people to honestly believe that Roger DeCoster (along with Mitch Payton and the other team managers) would actually pick the Motocross Des Nations team based on past personal history with the riders is absolutely absurd. Alessi is simply not cut out for the job.
I agree with this post. Leave all the fanboy crap and emotion out of the pick and this is what you come up with. Roger said he talked to Suzuki about support for 800 in Europe and it obviously wasn't going to be there. Roger doesn't make the pick by himself. Payton, AMA, Coombs all have some input in the process. When the folks who run MX teams and the series agree on three riders that is who goes. When DeCoster retires they still won't pick 800.

Oakley Bomb?

I have grown to like Alessi. I root for him to do well. He's had a great year this year and should be very proud to have finished second in the 450 class. he's obviously a hard worker and if you've ever seen him race in person it's clear he's one of the most talented MX racers in the world. Maybe not THE most but the kid's got skills.

That said, he was not the right pick for the MXdN team. As some have said, he's not the best sand rider. Support would definitely have been a question mark. And you don't go to a one shot race with anything left to question. Also, I can't get over how many times he just moved over and let Dungey (and maybe others) by this year. I love to see the kid do well but he just doesn't have much of a history of passing riders. He's usually getting passed. Now, if you always get the holeshot and you are the second or third fastest rider on the track, you'll always be getting passed. He needs to work hard on racing forward this off season and quit focusing on what's happening behind him.

Barcia and even Tomac were better choices in my opinion.

A lot of "fans" here have trouble letting go of the past regarding Mike, taking every opportunity to bring up things like Believe The Hype, or his run-in with Tedesco.

Mike has turned his program around, though, and is earning respect, like the Sportsman of the Year award last night.

Agreed, kind of like the ratio of 1 to 9 in business, handle a customer wrong and they tell 9, Handle them right an they either say nothing or tell one. He has had a great year, liked his podium speeches, rode well, represented the sport well. Glad to see he got the sportsman award, he deserved it.

I think it has something to do with his MC450 bike. It doesn't really favor any one brand. Suzuki would probably want some signage on it if he got factory help. Mike has done awesome, though. He's no doubt the number 2 man right now, period.
Seriously? Forget about bubba, canard, reed and rv2? had the 450 class been healthy this year ma800 would have been racing for 5th instead of second every week....

Any which way, alessi had a good year... He kept healthy and gained loads of confidence... Hopefully he can keep that ball rolling in 13'..

Lastly.. it only takes one thing to mend all those burnt bridges- winning... Alessi aint no spring chicken any more, if he is ever going to win a major title hes running out of time... 13 needs, nearly has to be, his year if its ever going to happen

Didn't see anything on the front page about Sportsman of the Year, should there be an 800 banner or something across there?

Go listen to Jake's interviews or podcasts with Matthes... He's an inteligent, articulate kid who has more to say about life than just MX and doesn't just robotically thank his sponsors ala Mike...

I dont think he has good form on the bike and his turns are slower than any of the big 5. He is an animal at training and it shows on his results. But all that said "You dont pull over and let second place by you". He gives up to quick. I want to see a guy that fights the whole race like Tomac.

I personally think if they took Mike to the DesNations it would have been a big mistake. Nothing to do with support or anything like that. Simply based on his riding, the dude rides always looking back and cutting lines. I am shocked he didn't take any one out this year, the shit he pulled at Monster cup has spilled into most races this year. Watching Dungey trying to get around him this year had me on the edge of my seat just waiting for something bad. You get two Mikes, the Mike that just spends more time looking back and pulls over to let someone by with no fight or the one who rides over his head crossing lines. Either one wouldn't represent the US as well as taking Barcia who will school Mike on a 450.

WTH you haters bitch if he rides a wide line, bitch if he rides clean, he messed up an went wide in that turn and decided not to push the issue. The dude rode his heart out all season, Dungey was faster but Mike wasn't far behind. Hopefully he will stay healthy through Supercross and then he can put you haters in your place again like he did this year.

Just making a joke man, he freaked out and didn't know what else to do so what. Heck man I fought a dude on top of the stairway to heaven at the Monster Mountain over a plastic trophy, when I finally got tired and couldn't knock him off his bike no more I kicked his spokes. So I can't say nothing.

Mike nailed the shit out of it this year!!! (including his interviews) I'll leave the debates about who should be on the exhibition racing team to others, but the fact is NOBODY else was even close in the 450 class this year. It was Dungey, MA.....................then a whole bunch of other guys way back there.
I kinda hope that team he's on keeps showing up a bunch of factory guys for a long time to come.

I'm a Weimer fan, but trying to say he's got anything over Mike is a joke.

Well said!

I wonder if everyone who bashes Mike (RC during the broadcast) realize they are bashing everyone that he beat all summer long. Not showing much respect to all the guys out there giving it their all.

All I'll say is I'm glad I was never a professional athlete with the mistakes I've made in the past so I don't hold Mikes deal against him.

I was just wondering if you really thought that was a good idea what Mike did.

I will say his odd choice this year to sign with MCR turned out good.

By the way, this Decoster interview from MXA sure didn't hold weight later in the season.

There’s a lot of talk about Mike Alessi. He’d be dying to go. What are your thoughts on him?
There are two problems there. I’m not so sure about what kind of support, equipment-wise, he’d get in Europe. Also, looking at lap times from the Nationals, there are 250 guys going almost as fast as Dungey, and Dungey is going a lot faster than anybody else that he’s racing right now.
Going from his statment shouldn't the team be Blake,Justin and Eli as there laptimes are faster than Dungey at the moment? Still think Mike has earned the right to go, solid in sx and been really good outdoors this year, started the year 30+ secs down each moto to on his tail at the end now, his laptimes prove he only a hair off now. And i think Dungey is going faster now than he was at begining of year.

"on a half ass bike"

That's where you lost me and the argument. You are Soooo wrong. The Bike RIPS. The Motor SHREDS and the Chassis is the Best he's had in a Long, Long, Long...Time.

As to Lap-Times: Sadly, Roger made his decision here...Barcia, on more than a few Saturdays, put in 30 Minutes(+2 laps) of Better lap times than Mike. Honda offered the "Direct Factory Support" to Roger for Barcia to go. Barcia has a History of railing a FO'Fiddy.

I, too, wanted to see Mike go.

Roger wants to see the U.S. "Crush It".

Mike certainly wasn't on a half ass bike. His team did a great job. All other things being equal, it would be very difficult to say No to direct factory support. The knowledge base and resources of the factory is invaluable.
